Camperdown. With the chosen Tourer coachwork completed the car was delivered in early 1923, and we are fortunate to have an original colour-touched beautiful photograph of the car taken outside the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The illustration appeared in a number of motoring journals and other media in advertisements for the coachbuilders. Quite early in the life of the car, as so often was the case with Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts, the original tourer body was removed. In this instance the firm of Jackson, Jones and Collins was en- trusted with the task of constructing a four-door saloon body on the chassis. The car passed through ownerships with J.R. Morgan, believed to be a dentist in Cronulla, a southern Sydney suburb and carrying the plate NSW 2500 then to a doctor in the Hunter Valley before returning to Sydney in 1936 in the hands of Richard Henderson of Burwood. In the 1950s it had front wheel brakes added when owned by F. Humphries of Penshurst, and was fitted with yet another body, a late 1920s English Saloon. For a short while it was owned by RROCA NSW member Malcolm Johns, he 1922 Silver Ghost Chassis 30KG covered sheep and cattle grazing, but according to the July 1956 issue Twas commissioned by the wealthy dairy farming, wheat and other forms of Motor Sport magazine, the Saloon NSW grazier, A.P. Owner Harold Read (right) tells local Cooma Highway Patrol Offi cers Pat O’Dea (left) and Bruce Durant (Centre) about the vehicle, then recently converted to the Snowy Mountains Tow Truck. Note the Shell Bowser globe strategically mounted up front.

6308 PRÆCLARVM 3-13 out with towing gear and crude rear panelling, 33KG became something of a celebrity vehicle, and featured in several wide-circulation popular weekly magazines. But Read moved northward and acquired the Caltex Service Station on the Hume Highway at Yass, and the loyal tow-truck was re-badged for Read’s Yass Highway Towing. It was here that the writer first came upon 30KG in January, 1959, and took the accompanying photograph. Note the snow chains still fitted to the dual spare wheels. While snow chains would have been es- sential equipment in the Snowy Mountains, they were very much a decoration at Yass. In Cooma, Harold Read commenced collect- ing all manner of historic horse-drawn vehicles, and this interest became an even stronger obsession upon his move to Yass. Read added extensively to this collection from some of the old pastoral properties around Yass and district. It was not long before he shifted his interest to developing his hobby into the Horse-Era Museum concept in the Canberra suburb of Watson. It was at this time that 30KG went onto the market. Many of the vehicles in Read’s carriage and wagon collection were later sold to the Commonwealth Government to form the nucleus of the carriages in the then still-to-be- built National Museum of Australia. With family nostalgia of original family- owned Silver Ghosts running through his veins William (Bill) Fagan of Sunnyridge, Mandurama, acquired 30KG to restore with period style coachwork, c1970, but this plan did not eventu- ate. Reasonably fresh from having sold his Watson’s Bay Motor Museum collection of his- toric cars, Ben Bronk must have been persua- sive in his efforts to acquire 30KG. By 1974 Ben had purchased 30KG and taken it to his home at Mudgeeraba, Queensland, and commenced a no-expense-spared restoration. It was fitted with replica tourer coachwork by Bradbury of Sydney, and is believed to have retained its original front mudguards throughout its life. With failing health, Ben reluctantly offered 30 KG for sale. It was offered at auction by Gilltraps in April, 1990, and the engine was started for the first time since its restoration after the sale. Shortly afterwards, the car was exported to a private museum in Japan. I gratefully acknowledge photographs of the restored 30KG taken by Ben Bronk’s close friend Bill Bishop.

olunteers, Richard Knight and David VKenway, have spent many hours identifying and cataloguing thousands of photographs which have been donated to the Foundation and here are a few of particular interest because of their Australian content. They were donated by David Shmith, former Managing Director of York Motors in Sydney. David’s father, Maurice Shmith, joined Tarrant Motors in 1904 as a car washer and by 1910 he was Sales Manager. With some partners he established Yellow Cabs in 1924 and in 1932 he was instrumental in the formation of York Motors in Sydney and became Managing Director until succeeded by his son, David. York Motors was subsequently taken above: This 1929 Phantom II Rolls-Royce rolling chassis, 61WJ, was featured at the 1930 over by Lindsay Fox and David Jones Melbourne Motor Show. As a consequence we have been able to supply copies of these service records to their respective RROCA owners. In a letter to Jeanne Eve at the time of donating the photographs, David Shmith in part wrote, “I think the PII chassis may have been imported by my father and had a Martin & King body fitted. I know for sure that Dad imported a 3 !/2 litre Bentley chassis on which he put a Martin & King body. My lifelong love of cars was kindled when Dad took me for a drive through Albert Park in Melbourne on the chassis. We touched 90 mph with the exhaust cut-out open. I was about 6 or 7 at the time.” You can read more about Maurice Shmith’s involvement above: A close-up of the off-side of the PII engine in 61WJ with motoring and also fi nd more details about the motor cars featured in this article in Rolls-Royce and Bentley in a Sunburnt Country, copies of which are available from the Foundation for $75 including postage. This selection of photographs will be of particular interest to Phantom and 20/25hp owners because of the detail captured when these cars were new. My thanks go to David Neely and Tom Clarke for identifying the various cars.

The fi rst of the Register Dinners were held on Wednesday night, April 10th, with the Derby Phantom, Small HP and Derby Bentley Registers making one group and the Silver Wraith, Silver Dawn and Bentley Mk VI/R Type Register another, both holding their respective dinners. The rally itself kicked off on Thursday 11th. The day saw the remainder of the Rally entrants arrive at varying times. We were formally welcomed to the 55th Federal Rally by Roland Sharman, President of the SA Branch and Kim Stapleton, Federal President of the RROCA. A very pleasant evening was had by all, as members mingled and introduced themselves. During the evening the Chairman of the Sir Henry Royce Foundation, Russell Rolls, announced the winner of the F.J. Engish Award for Club Photography 2012, this award was taken out by Queensland Junior Member, Jordan Carson: all three

6312 PRÆCLARVM 3-13 On Friday evening a number of members were invited to a Lord Mayoral Reception at the elegant Adelaide Town Hall where they were very impressed by the speech given by the Lord Mayor, Stephen Yarwood, the youngest Lord Mayor in Australia. He graciously welcomed each one of us and spoke eloquently of his vision for the advancement of his city and the work that is already underway. Later on Friday evening members attended the Silver Cloud, Bentley S, Phantom V, VI plus Silver Shadow, Bentley T plus SMART Register dinner, while others went to the Silver Ghost Register Dinner. The Jetty Hotel was the venue for the Cloud et al dinner and just over seventy members, partners and guests were in attendance. Friday started with a Dawn Patrol for those who were eager to get up early for a ride in a pre-war car. The Patrol comprised 4 Silver Ghosts, 2 Phantoms and one 20 HP. The rest of the day however was free to enjoy one of the many planned self-drive runs into the countryside: on offer were the Birdwood Mill Tourist Drive, the Scenic Mount Lofty Drive and the McLaren Vale Gourmet Tour. The Rally Handbook provided information and maps on the runs, which made travelling very enjoyable and easy to follow. A fi nal ale or other appropriate liqueur saw the evening come to a close and the “players” go on to other venues. Most diners enjoyed the refreshing walk back to the Oaks, looking forward to good night’s sleep in readiness for the next day’s events. Conversations overheard ranged from the technical aspects of our cars, sources of replacement parts, reliable repair specialists and why Tasmania had so many local councils. The meals were ample and well-presented and from the comments of the diners, all were well satisfi ed. The service provided by the hotel staff was excellent. A superb buffet luncheon was set out in the Drill Hall and outside a coffee van did a roaring trade all day. The venue was close enough for those who wanted to look at the Turner Exhibition, if they had not been before, or to do some retail therapy to slip away for a while. The spare parts tent was another interesting spot. It was noticed at the end of the day that many members came away with somewhat lighter wallets and some large and rather interesting looking parcels! There was time at the end of the day to have a wee rest before heading off to the evening function, at the Adelaide Zoo. We were to see the Pandas and attend an exclusive dinner at the Sanctuary, a function facility recently completed as part of the Zoo redevelopment. These Pandas are the only ones in the southern hemisphere and are a major attraction for the Zoo. Upon arrival at dusk we were led through part of the Zoo grounds, with maybe some wonderment about the inhabitants of some of the enclosures we passed, until we came to an impressive covered area complete with bar and food serving facility, adjacent to the Panda homes. The word ‘homes’ is an appropriate term as they have separate areas for day and night with rocks, trees and other necessities, all to a high standard. The Pandas, Wang Wang the male and Funi, the female have separate adjacent homes for most of the time, apart from their narrow breeding season and were cute, looked cuddly and put on a good showing.

above: the Presentation Dinner, with MC Peter Crauford, included all the normal formal items, including the presenation of the Club’s Concours Trophies Unfortunately, Sunday’s Dawn Patrol was cancelled due to a lack of numbers, however, the day gave the chance to do another of the planned self-drive tours or to just potter around. Those who tripped to the Birdwood Car Museum had a very interesting day as the museum hosted a Rock and Roll Festival in the surrounding grounds. Sunday night the glittering Presentation Dinner, held at the nearby Stamford Grand Hotel, proudly displayed George Lucey’s delightful Phantom 1, 89DC. SA once again drew on the resources of the Flinders University with International Tourism students given the practical experience of managing the event for us. Similarly, students from UniSA designed the SA55 logo and the various supporting brochures and graphics. The smaller branches especially, need all the help they can get! The results of the Concours were awarded during the evening and their detail follows in this edition of Præclarvm. Monday’s Farewell Breakfast came around all too quickly as we said our fond goodbyes, see you again next year. The SA Branch organized a post rally “Southern Sojurn” tour down the Fleurieu Peninsula, which also became a very successful event. Thank you to the SA branch for organizing a great rally, a fantastic time was had by the Rally entrants and we all now look forward to 2014, when the NSW Branch will host the Federal Rally in the Hunter Valley. This part of the evening was most pleasant with pre- dinner drinks and delicious fi nger food served. The pandas were very active and put on quite a show for us, playing to the crowd, so much for those who said it wasn’t worth going to because the pandas are always asleep. It was a great night with even more delicious food.

One way, almost the only really effective way to use a club registered vehicle for a long drive, is on an overlander. Not all members are able, or wish, to do this sort of drive, but, for those do it is great fun and builds the cameradie with others in the Club. The accumulators on a Shadow can be opened to repair, principally to replace the diaphragm seen in the picture. The bottom half of the unit is the part fi lled with nitrogen which forces the diaphragm up against the top half.
