In a world where numbers, statistics and calculations dominate, we ask you to bring your ‘right side brain’ creativity to bear on the idea of ‘measurement’.

From cultural textile patterns to the conceptual tools of linear perspective and horizon lines, from the paradoxical paintings of Rene Magritte and etchings of M.C Escher to computer rendered fractals, from the strange phenomena of Synesthesia, where numbers are sometimes perceived as colours, to the deliberate use of numbers and text as subject matter, our creativity is often intertwined with mathematical reference.

A suite of local artists has been invited to respond to this idea of ‘measurement’ as a starting point for Gecko’s next group exhibition. Featuring works by artists from South Gippsland, this exhibition will run for two months.

midst of releasing 5 studio albums both beloved by fans and critically adored, Blasko continues to find time to write scores for award winning film, television and theatre productions.

Saturday 10th June, 8pm. Support: TBC $60/$65 SOLD OUT

English Brit award winning singer-songwriter Beth Orton today announces that she will play dates around the country this June, adding to her already announced appearance at the Sydney Opera House (Vivid Live festival). Last in Australia in 2013 for the Heavenly Sounds tour, Orton is well known for her mesmerising on- stage presence and powerfully emotive vocals. Consequence Of Sound wrote of Orton’s “… intensely heartfelt vocals and ever assured guitar…” at a recent London show, continuing that “Orton’s vocal at times recalled the melisma of and the purity of Sandy Denny”. Orton will perform with a full band for the first time in Australia in many years playing songs spanning her celebrated career from Trailer Park, Central Reservation, Daybreaker, Comfort of Strangers and to her 2016 Kidsticks, which was co-written and co-produced in LA with Fuck Buttons’ Andrew Hung. The album received rave reviews from tastemakers around the world, with the UK’s Guardian describing the album as a “joyously abandoned swirl of words and sounds”, while Clash Magazine said, “it is an album marking out its own territory rather than trying to conform to expectations.” “Her 20 years of folk-electro oscillations find an experimental middle ground here, between breathy vocal rounds and abstract electronic grooves”, said Australia. WATCH Beth’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert here, and live performance of Moon on WFUV here Don’t miss your chance to experience this incredible performer when she returns to our shores in June.

● JOE PUG Saturday 15th July, 8pm Support: Courtney Marie Andrews $40/$45

Chicago born and raised Joe Pug is no stranger to this part of the world and makes a welcome return to headline shows after coming down in 2016. His third and critically acclaimed album Windfall, a 10-song indie-folk gem that has cemented his reputation as one of America’s most respected young songwriters, was met with high praise with The Australian describing it as “absolutely brilliant.” As Paste Magazine commented, “Windfall is an album about not just the broken moments and uphill climbs that shape life, but how to exist in those moments, how to draw on core strengths and adapt, how to live through it all and come out stronger.” We all agreed and you will hear tunes from this, his back catalogue and new tunes and covers come July.

Touring with Joe will be Courtney Marie Andrews. At just 16 years old, Andrews left home in Arizona for her first tour. Travelling up and down the West Coast of the USA, busking and playing anywhere that would have her. Soon after, she took a Greyhound bus four nights straight from Phoenix to New York to do the same on the East Coast. For a decade or so since, Courtney’s been a session and backup singer and guitarist for nearly 40 artists, including . She never stopped writing her own material, though. Picking up admirers like Jurado and Ryan Adams along the way, she has quietly earned a reputation as a songwriter’s songwriter. Her 2016 album release ‘Honest Life’ has been praised by media universally with the UK’s Daily Telegraph saying “the poetic economy of her lyrics is right up there with such masters of the country vignette as Guy Clark and John Prine…a truly substantial talent.” That’s some big associations right there. Joe Pug and Courtney Marie Andrews. Two sensational talents gracing the one stage for a great night of music and discovery. Don’t miss them this July.

Meeniyan ● moo’s at meeniyan 89 Whitelaw St, Meeniyan. Ph 5664 0010, fax 5664 0050 open Thursday to Monday from 8:30am and for dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings (closed Tuesday and Wednesdays) Wine of the Month – Dirty Three Wines - It’s all about the dirt. Great wine tastes the way it does because of the dirt it’s grown in and the hands that got dirty making it. We make with soul, that speak of the dirt in which they’re grown and that ooze the love we have for this wily grape. Dirty Three's ultimate goal is to craft wines with a unique sense of Gippsland. To speak of the land on which they are grown. Marcus says, “For me the pathway is quite simple, grow fantastic fruit and pick it just at the right moment. The rest follows quite naturally and with very little need for tinkering or artificial adjustments in the winery. To me the greatest vintage and vineyard expression happens when you nail these two things.” The reality is quite a lot harder than this of course. Growing great fruit and making great wine takes a total focus, commitment and passion to the craft. A never-ending pursuit of improvement and respect for the dirts on which we have been granted as a custodian. It’s all about the dirt. 2016 Dirty Three Riesling - South Gippsland Riesling is not very widely planted in Gippsland, although it could be. Riesling’s native home is in Germany, so it is not so surprising to find it is best suited to cold climates like that of South Gippsland. 2016 Dirty Three Pinot Noir- South Gippsland Pinot Noir is the most widely planted grape across Gippsland and justifiably so. The cool climate and wide variety of soils in Gippsland suit the variety almost perfectly. Vineyard sites across Gippsland produce quite stark differences in resulting wine flavour and structure. This one of the unique and endearing qualities of Pinot, that it wears its dirt on its sleeve.

Sandy Point

Sandy Point Music Club - A group of interested residents have recently banded together to form a Sandy Point Music Club. Their aim is to enhance the village atmosphere of Sandy Point by organising regular events at the Community Centre. The plan is to encompass different styles of music to cater for different ages and groups with the main focus on having social and fun evenings. This is very important in a community and Sandy Point is pretty well a perfect size to allow this to happen. As a result of running such events the group hopes to make a small profit with the proceeds being donated to worthy causes with some local connection. Profit from the first two events was given to the South Gippsland Hospital. The Music Group would love to hear from people with ideas and “special requests” for future events.
