Ahead of the “A Good Look’n Tour” dates, Childers will continue his sold-out “Country Squire Run” headline tour this year with upcoming stops at New York’s Brooklyn Steel (two nights), Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom, Atlanta’s Tabernacle (two nights) and Boston’s House of Blues among several others. Additionally, he will perform three special shows at Pikeville, KY’s Appalachian Wireless Arena on December 27, December 28 and December 31 and will make his headline debut at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium with four special sold-out shows next year: February 6, February 7, February 15 and February 16. See below for complete details. These performances add to a landmark year for Childers, whose critically acclaimed new album Country Squire debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart with over 32,000 equivalent units sold. Released on Hickman Holler Records/RCA Records, the album was produced by Simpson and David Ferguson and recorded The Butcher Shoppe in Nashville. Stream/purchase HERE. In celebration of the release, Childers recently performed his new single “All Your’n” on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” as well as “Whitehouse Road” as a bonus web exclusive. Recent critical acclaim for Country Squire… “…this is gonna be a record that people talk about.” “…internationally lauded Appalachian prophet…” “Childers remains a force to be reckoned with. A wrecking ball combination of incredibly perceptive songwriting backed by a world-class honky-tonk country band.” “…excellent…” “Even if you’re not a country fan, Childers—operating at the peak of his powers here—is worth embracing.” “He has a remarkable facility with telling details, which pepper Country Squire as vividly they did his 2017 breakout Purgatory.” “The list of country artists making groundbreaking music these days isn't as long as it should be, but it has to include Tyler Childers.” “changing modern country music by bringing back what it left behind.” “If Purgatory was Childers hovering between Lawrence County, Kentucky and the rest of the world, Country Squire announces his ascendence into country’s newest royalty.” “his best release yet” “…a bluegrass-meets-country sound punctuated by Childers’ vivid writing and twangy vocals.” “With a Springsteenian knack for penning songs that capture the spirit of a place, he continues on ‘Country Squire’ to show why he’s one of the most important—and honest—young voices in music.” “with each short story, Childers captures an honesty that’s undeniably universal.” “one of the foremost rising talents in country music.” “As a singer, songwriter, and composer he’s helping to move country away from oft-maligned tropes and bland hooks…he’s helping to restore heart and quality to a genre rich in tradition and quality.” “…a stunning achievement of form, a modern John Prine album delivered by a son of Appalachia for the sons of Appalachia. If Purgatory was the breakthrough, Country Squire is the one that proves that Childers is here for the long haul, a distinct talent making superlative albums that are layered, beautiful, and nearly perfect.” “…one of country and Americana’s finest storytellers…” In addition to Childers (vocals, acoustic guitar), the album features a number of world-renowned musicians including Stuart Duncan (fiddle, mandolin, banjo), Miles Miller (drums, background vocals) and Russ Pahl (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, pedal steel, Jaw harp, baritone). Of the mission behind the album, Childers comments, “I hope that people in the area that I grew up in find something they can relate to. I hope that I’m doing my people justice and I hope that maybe someone from somewhere else can get a glimpse of the life of a Kentucky boy.” photo credit: David McClister // album artwork The release of Country Squire continues a series of breakout years for the Kentucky-native, whose critically acclaimed debut album, Purgatory, was released in 2017. The record—also produced by Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson—landed on multiple “Best of 2017” lists including NPR Music, Rolling Stone, Noisey, The Bluegrass Situation, Wide Open Country and The Boot. Of the album, NPR Music raves “the intimacy he conjures is his gift, in this private moment made universal, and throughout his remarkable official debut,” while Pitchfork declares “it’s his voice, peppered with both the knowledge of the ages and the innocence of youth, that makes a song…so effective. Then it’s the lyrics, a mix of plain-talk honesty and beguiling metaphors, that tip the scales to timeless.” Since his debut, Childers was named “Emerging Artist of the Year” at the 2018 Americana Music Association Honors & Awards and has been featured on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert series and Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. Additionally, he’s toured extensively across the world including over 130 sold-out headline shows as well as multiple dates supporting John Prine. He has also performed at several major festivals including Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Festival, Austin City Limits and Stagecoach. COUNTRY SQUIRE TRACK LIST 1. Country Squire 2. Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • Dave Cobb Episode Transcript
VOICES IN THE HALL DAVE COBB EPISODE TRANSCRIPT PETER COOPER Welcome to Voices in the Hall, presented by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. I’m Peter Cooper. Today’s guest, producer extraordinaire Dave Cobb. DAVE COBB When we approach these records we approach it much the way a record would’ve been done in 1965, 1970. And it’s humans playing together. There are mistakes all over the record. There’s timing issues, there’s tuning issues, there’s pitch issues, there’s flubs of words. The same way people are seeking out organically grown food, I think people are seeking out organically grown music at the same time. The moment I heard Chris Stapleton I was like, “Man I’ve got to track him down.” If I can just get to Nashville I’d run into him and I’d run into Jason Isbell and try to sucker them in to make records. I like to fly by the seat of my pants. Walk in and see what’s going to grab you that day. To me it was a really cool thing about linking really great artists that I like now, and linking Nashville, what Nashville is today. Taking kind of a snapshot of it. And I love it when I get to introduce somebody to somebody else I think is talented. And you see there eyes both sparkle. And I love the unity in the scene. That’s why I moved here. PETER COOPER It’s Voices in the Hall, with Dave Cobb. “4th of July” - Shooter Jennings (Black Magick / Universal South) PETER COOPER “Fourth of July,” from Shooter Jennings.

  • Austin Lucas Biography April 2016
Austin Lucas Biography April 2016 When Austin Lucas began thinking about the follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2013 album, Stay Reckless, he had a lot on his mind. The Indiana troubadour wanted to do something not only different from his own previous work, but unlike anything else happening in the realm of country and Americana. Between The Moon And The Midwest marries traditional and cosmic country sounds with sharp, vivid storytelling in a fully realized concept album. "The songs for the new record began to emerge back in 2011 leading up to the sessions for Stay Reckless," Lucas says. "It was a tumultuous time in my life. I was on the road virtually nonstop, and my marriage was falling apart. To cope with everything, I started pouring all the pain I was experiencing into these fictionalized characters. Really, I was trying to avoid reflecting on the state of my personal life." Two years later, Lucas was deeper into the void, battling crippling bouts of anxiety and depression. Out of desperation, he returned to the old character-driven songs he'd written and shelved, this time with an even darker perspective. Drawing on his life experiences in rural Indiana, Lucas began crafting an intimate song cycle that captured the intricacies of friendship, love and betrayal. “Writing these songs was therapy through escapism,” Lucas says. “By using characters, I accidentally created an environment where I could speak openly—oftentimes about things that were buried more deeply than I’d normally express. For example, the spiraling depression that cast a shadow over the final months of writing and recording the album.
