Accepted for publication I4 February 1986 Four categories of islands in SE Asia may be identified on the basis of their histories of landbridge connections. Those islands on the shallow, continental Sunda Shelf were joined to the Asian mainland by a broad landbridge during the late Pleistocene; other islands were connected to the Sunda Shelf by a middle Pleistocene landbridge; some were parts of larger oceanic islands; and others remained as isolated oceanic islands. The limits of late Pleistocene islands, defined by the 120 ni bathymetric line, are highly concordant with the limits of faunal regions. Faunal variation among non-volant mammals is high between faunal regions and low within the faunal regions; endcmism of faunal regions characteristically exceeds 70%. Small and geologically young oceanic islands are depauperate; larger and older islands are more species-rich. The number of endemic species is correlated with island area; however, continental shelf islands less than 125000 km2 do not have endemic species, whereas isolated oceanic islands as small as 47 km2 often have endemic species. Geologirally old oceanic islands have many endemic species, whereas young oceanic islands have few endemic species. Colonization across sea channels that were 5-25 km wide during the Pleistocene has been low, with a rate of about 1-2/500000 years. -

Here, the rodent fauna of Seram is briefly reviewed, and a newly recorded rodent from the island is described as Melomys rufescens paveli, anew subspecies of a species otherwise known from New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago. Other non-volant mammals from Seram and the nearby islands of Ambon and Buru are briefly discussed. Protected forests in West Java are wider than conservation forests, whereas mammalian diversity in protected forests is as high as mammalian diversity in conservation forests. Mammals in protected forests are not protected by regional protection regulations, while anthropogenic factors in Java are quite high. This is possible that mammals who have high conservation status will experience local extinction. This study aims to determine (i) the composition of mammalian species and (ii) the species that are always found in studies of mammalian diversity in West Java. The study was conducted through a qualitative approach by combining several methods such as interview, camera trapping, sign survey, observation and transect, and collapsible traps. -

Raya Cibodas, Cianjur, West Java 43253, Indonesia Corresponding author: Anton Ario, [email protected] ABSTRACT Since 2008, Conservation International Indonesia (CI Indonesia) has been working together with Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park (GGPNP) to develop ecosystem restoration program in extended critical land area of National Park. More than 120,000 trees of 8 native species trees planted in an area of 300 hectares. Now the ecosystem has been restored and provides multiple benefits including become a new habitat for wildlife. A preliminary study on birds and mammals diversity in restored area was conducted from April to May 2018 in Nagrak Resort, GGPNP. The aim of this study is to assess the diversity of birds and mammals within ecosystem restored in the GGPNP. Bird surveys use point counts method, and mammals use camera trap. The results showed a total of 33 bird species of 22 families with the total number recorded of 1,881 individuals. A total of 10 mammal species of 7 families were captured in the study area with a total of 623 trap days produced 113 independent photos of mammals. The species of mammals consist of Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas), Leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis), Common palm-civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus), Small indian-civet (Viverricula indica), Javan gold-spotted mongoose (Hervestes javanicus), Muntjac (Muntiacus muntjac), Long-tiled macaque (Macaca fascicularis), Javan porcupine (Hystrix javanicus), Wild boar (Sus scrofa), and Malayan field rat (Rattus tiomanicus). -

I0024 NUMBER 25II FEBRUARY 20, 1973 Zoogeographical Significance of the Ricefield Rat, Rattus argentiventer, on Celebes and New Guinea and the Identity of Rattus pesticulus BY GUY G. MUSSERI ABSTRACT In the present report I document the identity of Rattus pesticulus, a taxon named and described by Oldfield Thomas (1921) from one specimen obtained in north- eastern Celebes, with the ricefield rat, R. argentiventer. The ricefield rat lives in grasslands and fields of rice and has a spotty geographic distribution that extends from the mainland of Southeast Asia to the Philippines and New Guinea. I also list and discuss the scientific names that apply to R. argentiventer and point out the zoogeographic significance of its occurrence on Celebes and New Guinea. Rattus pesticulus is a taxon known only from northeastern Celebes and one whose identity and proper allocation has been in doubt since it was originally named and described by Oldfield Thomas in 1921.. It is one of the many taxa that needs to be defined before the number of species of Rattus that occur on Celebes can be determined and their morphological and ecological limits understood-a prerequisite to understanding the zoogeographic affinities of these species. However, the conversion of natural forests for various purposes has caused forest fragmentation. A novel strategy of conservation is proposed in the form of protected area within industrial estate as the contribution of industrial company in biodiversity conservation. The purpose of this study is to document the endemic and threatened species of mammals existing at two forest fragments with extent of 15 ha and 7.4 ha in a natural gas refinery industry area in Bontang, East Kalimantan and their potential as biodiversity conservation areas. Mammals were monitored at the two forest fragments through direct surveys, trace identification, mist nets, and camera traps. -

West Java has various habitat types, natural forests and human-land modified. Based on previous studies by Padjadjaran University that mammals were found in several locations, such as Gunung Salak, Ciletuh, Cisokan, Kamojang, and Darajat. There are many mammals found in various habitat so that it is important to reveal the habitat types that are usually used by mammals to fulfill their daily needs. The purpose of this study is to reveal the habitat types that are most commonly found in mammal species. Semi-structured interviews, direct observations, camera trapping, sign survey, and collapsible trap installation were applied in this study. Based on the results of the study, Mammals in West Java were found in 54 species, 21 families, and nine orders.
