Accepted for publication I4 February 1986 Four categories of islands in SE Asia may be identified on the basis of their histories of landbridge connections. Those islands on the shallow, continental Sunda Shelf were joined to the Asian mainland by a broad landbridge during the late Pleistocene; other islands were connected to the Sunda Shelf by a middle Pleistocene landbridge; some were parts of larger oceanic islands; and others remained as isolated oceanic islands. The limits of late Pleistocene islands, defined by the 120 ni bathymetric line, are highly concordant with the limits of faunal regions. Faunal variation among non-volant mammals is high between faunal regions and low within the faunal regions; endcmism of faunal regions characteristically exceeds 70%. Small and geologically young oceanic islands are depauperate; larger and older islands are more species-rich. The number of endemic species is correlated with island area; however, continental shelf islands less than 125000 km2 do not have endemic species, whereas isolated oceanic islands as small as 47 km2 often have endemic species. Geologirally old oceanic islands have many endemic species, whereas young oceanic islands have few endemic species. Colonization across sea channels that were 5-25 km wide during the Pleistocene has been low, with a rate of about 1-2/500000 years. -

Marie Moinet 2020 © Marie Moinet 2020 Abstract Leptospirosis is an important zoonosis in New Zealand where it has historically been associated with livestock. Formerly negligible in human cases notified, Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Ballum—associated with rodents and hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus)—is now preponderant. The role of wild introduced mammals in the epidemiology of leptospirosis has been overlooked in New Zealand but remains a critical question. In this thesis, we determined the prevalence of Leptospira serovars, renal colonisation and seroprevalence in wild mammals and sympatric livestock. During a cross- sectional and a longitudinal survey, house mice (Mus musculus), ship rats (Rattus rattus) and hedgehogs were trapped in farms with a history of leptospirosis to collect sera and kidneys. Urine and sera from livestock (dairy or beef cattle, sheep) and dogs were also collected on the same farms. Sera were tested by microagglutination test to identify serovars/serogroups that circulate in wildlife for comparison with those circulating in livestock. Urine and kidney samples were used to determine prevalence by qPCR, to isolate circulating leptospires by culture and subject them to whole genome sequencing, in order to determine their phylogenetic relationships and compare them to other sequences locally, nationally and internationally. -

378 RECENT PROGRESS IN OUR KNOWLEDGE OF PARASITIC WORMS AND THEIR RELATION TO THE PUBLIC HEALTH. BY WILLIAM NICOLL, M.A., D.Sc, M.D., D.P.H. (London School of Tropical Medicine.) TEN years ago I made an attempt to summarize briefly the advances which had been made in our knowledge of parasitic worms during the preceding few years. The interval has witnessed much upheaval and interruption of scientific labour, but nevertheless a very considerable amount of work on the subject has been accomplished. The nature of this does not appear to have been influenced to any exceptional extent by the war. During this period a terse but useful summary of the more outstanding recent parasitological work has been published by Faust who deals with the subject mainly from its zoological aspect; while the chief publications of medical interest have been succinctly reviewed by Leiper. In the following notes I propose to deal with the subject in somewhat greater detail particu- larly in its relation to the public health. One might have anticipated that in a country such as France the pre- paration and publication of scientific papers would have been grievously hampered by war conditions but that was certainly far from being the case, for French workers, indeed, are excelled only by British and Americans in the quantity and quality of their output of helminthological literature. Russia and Germany are, as might have been expected, a considerable dis- tance behind, while the only other countries in which any outstanding work on parasitic worms has been done are Brazil and Japan. -
