„Etnografia Polska”, t. LXIV, 2020, z. 1–2 PL ISSN 0071-1861 DOI: 10.23858/EP64.2020.009 ALINA KACZMAREK-SUBRAMANIAN Institute of Archeology and Ethnology, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw CASTE AND ETHNICITY IN SOUTH INDIA: A CASE STUDY OF THE KONKANI PEOPLE IN KOCHI INTRODUCTION This article attempts to present the problem of caste in the 2010s as a part of contemporary transformations and related issues based on the findings of impor- tant sociological and anthropological studies (ethnic awareness of caste, Barnett 1975; ethnicization of caste, Fuller 1996; caste as social group and social practice, Natrajan 2005, 2012a, 2012b; performative and changing phenomenon, Reddy 2005). It focuses on a case study of the Konkani people who inhabit the city of Kochi in southern India1. Kochi lies within the district of Ernakulam in the state of Kerala. Cochin2 is the post-British name of the city, while the current official name is Kochi. The source of information herein presented on the Konkani in Kochi3 is that of fifty in-depth ethnographic interviews, field notes, and other materials – along with experiences from participant observations arising from field research I was con- ducting in 2014–2018. My interlocutors had Konkani origin and spoke more or less Konkani language. I conducted interviews in the homes of the respondents, with a few exceptions, as when they were conducted at the interlocutor’s workplace, at school, in a shop, or institution. My friend, a member of the caste named Goud Saraswat (who will be described further), often helped me find interlocutors. I found some of them also by accident, while talking to the inhabitants of Kochi and find- ing out who knows the Konkani language, although the language we spoke was the language of education and administration in Kerala, which is English.

Accepted 24 August, 2012 Ethnoecological studies on Acacia modesta Wall. (Mimosaceae) growing wild in Dargai area of Malakand District (Pakistan), demonstrated a great demand due to the medicinal value of its flowers oil, gum, resins and sticks for honey bee. The plant as a whole is also valuable as fuel-wood and as construction material for income. Locally, common folk used it as fodder, timber, fencing, and household items and as a source of honey bee production. The tree was found to be abundant in some villages of Dargai area. The frequency being: 35% in Jaban, 15% in Kot, 25% in Mehrdi, 10% in Wartair, and 15% in Qaldara villages of Dargai. Interestingly, a great variation was noticed in the local selling prices of the gum which were also found higher in national as well as international markets. Ecological studies showed that A. modesta trees growing on all ranges of soils including: dry to wet, sandy to calcareous and acidic soils along with association of Olea cuspidata, Ziziphus jujuba, Zizyphus nummularia, and Acacia arabica. Phonological studies revealed all the three stages of trees from juvenile, young and rare older trees, in the region under study.

Program for Culture & Conflict Studies www.nps.edu/programs/ccs Hajji Din Mohammad Biography Hajji Din Mohammad, a former mujahedin fighter from the Khalis faction of Hezb-e Islami, became governor of the eastern province of Nangarhar after the assassination of his brother, Hajji Abdul Qadir, in July 2002. He is also the brother of slain commander Abdul Haq. He is currently serving as the provincial governor of Kabul Province. Hajji Din Mohammad’s great-grandfather, Wazir Arsala Khan, served as Foreign Minister of Afghanistan in 1869. One of Arsala Khan's descendents, Taj Mohammad Khan, was a general at the Battle of Maiwand where a British regiment was decimated by Afghan combatants. Another descendent, Abdul Jabbar Khan, was Afghanistan’s first ambassador to Russia. Hajji Din Mohammad’s father, Amanullah Khan Jabbarkhel, served as a district administer in various parts of the country. Two of his uncles, Mohammad Rafiq Khan Jabbarkhel and Hajji Zaman Khan Jabbarkhel, were members of the 7th session of the Afghan Parliament. Hajji Din Mohammad’s brothers Abdul Haq and Hajji Abdul Qadir were Mujahedin commanders who fought against the forces of the USSR during the Soviet Occupation of Afghanistan from 1980 through 1989. In 2001, Abdul Haq was captured and executed by the Taliban. Hajji Abdul Qadir served as a Governor of Nangarhar Province after the Soviet Occupation and was credited with maintaining peace in the province during the years of civil conflict that followed the Soviet withdrawal. Hajji Abdul Qadir served as a Vice President in the newly formed post-Taliban government of Hamid Karzai, but was assassinated by unknown assailants in 2002.

Williamsburg, VA, 23188 Mahsuds and Wazirs; Maliks and Mullahs in Competition Mahsuds and Wazirs; Maliks and Mullahs in Competition No patchwork scheme—and all our present recent schemes...are mere patchwork— will settle the Waziristan problem. Not until the military steam-roller has passed over the country from end to end, will there be peace. But I do not want to be the person to start that machine. Lord Curzon, Britain’s viceroy of India The great drawback to progress in Afghanistan has been those men who, under the pretense of religion, have taught things which were entirely contrary to the teachings of Mohammad, and that, being the false leaders of the religion. The sooner they are got rid of, the better. Amir Abd al-Rahman (Kabul’s Iron Amir) The Pashtun tribes have individual “personality” characteristics and this is a factor more commonly seen within the independent tribes – and their sub-tribes – than in the large tribal “confederations” located in southern Afghanistan, the Durranis and Ghilzai tribes that have developed in- termarried leadership clans and have more in common than those unaffiliated, independent tribes. Isolated and surrounded by larger, and probably later arriving migrating Pashtun tribes and restricted to poorer land, the Mahsud tribe of the Wazirs evolved into a nearly unique “tribal culture.” For context, it is useful to review the overarching genealogy of the Pashtuns.

  • Principles of Modern American Counterinsurgency: Evolution And
Terrain, Tribes, and Terrorists: Pakistan, 2006-20081 By David J. Kilcullen, Partner, The Crumpton Group LLC Brookings Counterinsurgency and Pakistan Paper Series. No. 3. “The two main factors for you will be the terrain and the tribes. You have to know their game and learn to play it, which means you first have to understand their environment,” Professor Akbar Ahmed told me in May 2006. In the field, with military and civilian teams and local people in locations across Afghanistan and Pakistan at various times through the next three years, the wisdom of Professor Ahmed’s insight came home to me again and again. The fact is that the terrain and the tribes drive ninety percent of what happens on the Frontier, while the third factor, which accounts for the other ten percent, is the presence of transnational terrorists and our reaction to them. But things seem very different in Washington or London from how they seem in Peshawar, let alone in Bajaur, Khyber or Waziristan—in that great tangle of dust-colored ridges known as the Safed Koh, or “white mountains”. This is a southern limb of the Hindu Kush, the vast range that separates Afghanistan (which lies on the immense Iranian Plateau that stretches all the way to the Arabian Gulf) from the valley of the Indus, the northern geographical limit of the Indian subcontinent. The young Winston Churchill, campaigning here in 1897, wrote that “all along the Afghan border every man’s house is his castle. The villages are the fortifications, the fortifications are the villages. Every house is loopholed, and whether it has a tower or not depends only on its owner’s wealth.”2 “All the world was going ghaza” Churchill was describing the operations of the Malakand Field Force around the village of Damadola, in Bajaur Agency, during the Great Frontier War of 1897— a tribal uprising inspired and exploited by religious leaders who co-opted local tribes’ opposition to the encroachment of government authority (an alien and infidel presence) into their region.
