    (LYDIA) MARIA FRANCIS CHILD AND DAVID LEE CHILD HDT WHAT? INDEX MARIA FRANCIS LYDIA MARIA CHILD 1802 February 11, Thursday: Birth of Lydia Maria Francis in Medford, Massachusetts, as the youngest of 7 children of Susannah Rand Francis and David Convers Francis,1 a successful baker and businessman.2 She would grow up under the wing of her bookish older brother Convers Francis, Jr. and attend local schools and Medford’s First Parish, an orthodox Congregational church. When she would become 9, her brother would leave home to attend Harvard College. Possessed of an eager, inquiring mind, Lydia would be free to use the library of the First Parish minister, the Reverend David Osgood. The 6th generation of Southmayds in America: Daniel Starr Southmayd was born in Waterbury, Connecticut. He was a son of Ebenezer Southmayd (January 23, 1775-September 30, 1831) and Elizabeth Starr Southmayd (January 8, 1777-July 3, 1842) who had gotten married at South Farms, Connecticut, on April 16, 1797. 1. Her paternal grandfather, a weaver by trade, had been in the fighting around Concord and Lexington in 1775, and is said to have offed 5 of the enemy before being himself offed. Her “Grandfather’s House” about which she wrote her Thanksgiving poem was on South Street in Medford, Massachusetts and supposedly is this one near the Mystic River: 2. At no point would she ever allow herself to be referred to as “Lydia.” The name “Maria” is here to be pronounced not as in Spanish or French but as if it were “Mariah,” per “they called the wind mariah.” HDT WHAT? May 15, 2005 Original link I’m adding this post not through blogging software, like I normally do, but by hand, right into the webpage. It feels odd. I’m doing this because a week or so ago my web server started making funny error messages and not working so well. The web server is in Chicago and I am in California so it took a day or two to get someone to check on it. The conclusion was the hard drive had been fried. When the weekend ended, we sent the disk to a disk repair place. They took a look at it and a couple days later said that they couldn’t do anything. The heads that normally read and write data on a hard drive by floating over the magnetized platter had crashed right into it. While the computer was giving us error messages it was also scratching away a hole in the platter. It got so thin that you could see through it. This was just in one spot on the disk, though, so we tried calling the famed Drive Savers to see if they could recover the rest. They seemed to think they wouldn’t have any better luck. (Please, plase, please, tell me if you know someplace to try.) I hadn’t backed the disk up for at least a year (in fairness, I was literally going to back it up when I found it giving off error messages) and the thought of the loss of all that data was crushing.

Given that this is a book on Buddhism , the question itself, I imagine, packs enough polemics to put off all but the most forbearing reader. For, why read a book on Buddhism if not to drink from its eff usive fount of Wisdom? Th e promise of Wisdom certainly appears to be what draws people to Buddhism today. As a recent book off ering Wisdom from the Early Teachings suggests, Buddhism is attractive— and eff ective, of course— because its “approach to awakening is so simple and free of adherence to any kind of ideology.” 1 With his use of “ideology” here the author seems to imply something like merely concocted notions about the constituents of “awakening,” the kinds of fantastical notions that we fi nd in sectarian texts, doctrines, and religions. Th e author apparently wants to set off these inferior sorts of contrived, approximate forms from that which “points to a direct and simple approach .

Vibeke Hansen A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Sociology University of Essex October 2015 Abstract This is a thesis about the changing place of animals in post-Franco Spain, with particular reference to bullfighting, popular festivities, and pet-keeping. The thesis argues that since the ‘transition’ to democracy (1975-1982), which made Spain one of the most liberal social-democratic states in Europe, there have been several notable developments in human-animal relations. In some important respects, Spain has begun to shed its unenviable reputation for cruelty towards animals. Three important changes have occurred. First, bullfighting (corridas) has been banned in the Canary Islands (1991) and in Catalonia (2010). In addition, numerous municipalities have declared themselves against it. Second, although animals are still widely ‘abused’ and killed (often illegally) in local festivities, many have gradually ceased to use live animals, substituting either dead ones or effigies, and those that continue to use animals are subject to increasing legal restrictions. Third, one of the most conspicuous changes has been the growth in popularity of urban pet-keeping, together with the huge expansion of the market for foods, accessories and services - from healthy diets to cemeteries. Thus, the contest pivoted on the consequences of Cartesianism, which triggered two positions that were seen as erroneous. Followers of Descartes viewed the animal body as a mere machine, eliminating vegetative and sensitive animal souls.
