Master Dogen's Shobogenzo by Gudo Wafu Nishijima Master Dogens Shobogenzo general Buddhist usage, the term "treasury of the Dharma" refers to the written words of the Buddha's teaching collected in the Sutras as the middle of the Three Treasures of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. In Zen, however, the real treasure of the Dharma is not to be found in books but in one's own Buddha Nature and the ability to see this Correct View first of the Noble Eightfold Path of the treasure of Dharma is called the "Treasure of the Correct Dharma Eye". In the legend as told in the Master Dogens Shobogenzo, the Buddha holds up a flower and no one in the assembly responds except for Arya Kashyapa who gives a broad smile and laughs a little. I possess the Treasury of the Correct Dharma Eye, the wonderful heart-mind of Nirvana, the formless true form, the subtle Dharma gate, not Master Dogens Shobogenzo by written words, transmitted Master Dogens Shobogenzo outside the teaching. I hand it over and entrust these encouraging words to Kashyapa. A few years later, however, he embarked on a major project to develop extended commentaries on many of these and other passages Master Dogens Shobogenzo the Ch'an literature. In pre-modern times there were four major versions that consisted of 60, 75, 12, and 28 fascicles, with the 60 fascicle version being the earliest and the 28 fascicle version the latest. It is unclear which chapters this fascicle version would have included Master Dogens Shobogenzo in what order. The fascicles of the Eihei-ji manuscript were taken from the 75 and 12 fascicle versions and still retain the numbering system used from their source collections. Yoibutsu Yobutsu is an exception and is numbered as fascicle 38, which does not correspond to any extant version. Bonseiwho died in the early 15th century, created an 84 fascicle version consisting of the 75 fascicle version plus 9 books from the 60 fascicle version. Four copies of Bonsei's collection survive, with the oldest dating from It also included more additional writings, including Master Dogens Shobogenzo apocryphal Chinzo and several variant versions of other chapters. He thought that the 60 fascicle version was compiled by Giun and was the oldest, most correct version, and as result his version is identical for the first 59 fascicles except for two replacements from other versions and one combination of Master Dogens Shobogenzo fascicles into one. The remainder is added from the 12 and 75 fascicle versions with 10 fascicles from those being specifically excluded. This began as a 90 fascicle version, the first to be printed on woodblocks rather than hand copied, beginning in and known as the Honzan edition. Many other versions were made in the 20th century, some of which indiscriminately combined sections from different manuscripts. The Gokikigaki contains a date ofsuggesting Senne may have completed it around that time. There Master Dogens Shobogenzo no evidence that these commentaries were widely read at the time they were produced. In it, he harshly criticized the text, rejected several fascicles altogether, and made extensive "corrections" and revisions to the source text. Menzan's student Fuzan and his students put this extensive study into writing in the s. There are now four complete English translations of the Kana Shobogenzo. It takes on the nature of reality, the nature of self, the nature the story it just told you and the nature of the book itself. Master Dogen retells stories that perhaps you've already heard and that seem clear and explains why the hero is the villain and how the fool is filled with wisdom and how the thought that just crossed your mind is wrong, wrong, wrong! In fact it doesn't exist! In fact, you never had that thought! Stop all this thinking nonsense you're doing! He also tells you, in great detail, how to wipe your ass with a stick. So, it's got that going for it, too. There are a small handful of English translations of the full Shobogenzo of which this is volume one of four.

() Though Zen is said to be based on a "special transmission outside scriptures" which "did not stand upon words", [1] the Zen-tradition has a rich doctrinal and textual background. It has been influenced by sutras such as the Lankavatara Sutra[2] [3] the Vimalakirti Sutra[4] [5] [6] the Avatamsaka Sutra[7] and the Lotus Sutra. Subsequently, the Zen tradition produced a rich corpus of written literature which has become a part of its practice and teaching, including the Platform Sutra[3] [8] lineage charts, collected sayings of Zen-masters, and the koan-literature. Contrary to the popular image, literature does play a role in the Zen-training. UnsuiZen-monks, "are expected to become familiar with the classics of the Zen canon". Nevertheless, Zen is often pictured as anti-intellectual. Zen Buddhism: Volume 2: A History (Japan) use of koans, which are highly stylized literary texts, reflects this popularity among the higher classes. One view was that of jiaowai biechuan"a special transmission outside the teaching". The famous saying "do not establish words and letters", attributed in this period to Bodhidharma, [14]. The Zen tradition, especially Rinzai Zen, aims to give a direct transmission of insight, and stresses the impossibility of giving any positive statement of this insight. Not founded upon words and letters. It lets one see into [one's own true] nature and [thus] attain Buddhahood. An example of this non- dependence on words and scripture in 9th century China is Teshan Tokusan From the Zen perspective, scriptures are nothing but scraps of paper for wiping up filth.

  • RHETORIC: the Instrument of Mediation
CHAPTER 5 RHETORIC: the instrument of mediation "Huang Po is such a grandmother that he utterly exhausted himself with your troubles!" said Ta-yu. "And now you come here asking whether you were at fault or not!" At these words, Lin-chi attained great enlightenment. "Ah," he cried, "there isn't so much to Huang Po's Buddha-dharmal" The Recorded Sayings of Lin-chi1 Ts'ui-feng asked: "What words does Huang Po use to instruct people?" "Huang Po has no words," said Lin-chi. The Recorded Sayings of Lin-chi1 Language plays a far greater role in the mind of a Zen master like Huang Po than that of an "instrument," a tool intentionally applied to the carrying out of particular purposes. Nevertheless, when language does function as an instrument in Zen, it is a tool of considerable power and precision. Indeed, in its "golden age" and today, Zen has been best known for its unique instrumental rhetoric, its own counterclaims notwithstanding. The "discourse of awakening" in Zen produces a kind of rhetoric very much unlike anything ever heard or read in East Asia or elsewhere, a way of speaking/writing that is distinctively "Zen." In this chapter we consider both the character of this rhetoric and the role it plays in the quest for "awakening." The first extract at the head of this chapter acknowledges the possibil- ity of a rhetorical impetus to awakening: "Lin-chi attained great enlight- enment," u\a\t these words" Given the principle of "no dependence on language" and the ubiquity of language critique in Zen, who would have thought that enlightenment might "originate dependent" upon "words," or that "words" might be the primary element structuring its 1 Sasaki, The Recorded Sayings of Lin-chi, p.

From the perspective of religion diffusion studies, this dissertation investigates the three stages of this process: 1. the displacement of Caodong 曹洞 Chan center to Fujian in the seventeenth century; 2. Chinese migration bringing Buddhism to Taiwan in the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and 3. the expansion diffusion activities of the institutions and masters affiliated with this lineage in Taiwan during the Japanese rule (1895-1945), and the new developments of humanistic Buddhism (renjian fojiao 人間佛教) after 1949. In this spreading process of the Gushan Chan lineage, Taiwanese Buddhism has emerged as the bridge between Chinese and Japanese Buddhism because of its unique historical experiences. It is in the expansion diffusion activities of the Gushan Chan lineage in Taiwan that Taiwanese Buddhism has gradually attained autonomy during the Japanese rule, leading to post-war new developments in contemporary humanistic Buddhism. His many travels and his experiences in a Zen Buddhist monastery and as a member of the Amsterdam Special Constabulary "being a policeman in one's spare time" as he phrased it in his introduction to Outsider in Amsterdam lent authenticity to his works of fiction and nonfiction. Janwillem van de Wetering was particularly noted for his detective fiction , his most popular creations being Grijpstra and de Gier , a pair of Amsterdam police officers who figure in a lengthy series of novels and short stories. Most of the mysteries are rich with images from Amsterdam, where most of them take place; some also feature a cat: in earlier novels, one named Oliver; in later novels, a female named Tabriz.
