Northup, Major Professor The purpose of this thesis was to explore the history and rituals of Japanese Soto Zen nuns and American Soto Zen ordained women in order to examine the motivations behind each group’s practices and distinguish the differences in the intent and practice of American Soto women’s rituals, specifically their reactions to the influence of feminism, and the effects of American syncretization in order to identify if a schism or a continuation is occurring within the Soto Zen tradition. Along with a survey of published research, interviews were conducted with two scholars and prominent ordained Soto practitioners–eight female and three male. Findings suggest that while maintaining strict adherence to specific orthodox rituals, American Soto women also reinterpret Soto traditions and adapt new practices to address the needs of American women’s practice.     Faith Leaders Call for a Standing Rock Lifeline, Not a Deadline December 5, 2016 We, the 1833 undersigned faith leaders, have come together from our diverse traditions to publicly declare our shared support of the Standing Rock Sioux Nation and their allied water protectors of Standing Rock. Recently, we have witnessed the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and the Governor of North Dakota issue eviction orders for the largest water protector camp seeking to defend the Missouri River from the Dakota Access Pipeline. In response, Standing Rock Sioux Chairman Dave Archambault II has stated, “The most dangerous thing we can do is force well-situated campers from their shelters and into the cold." While there have been promises on the part of the government to not forcibly remove those in the camp, we are aware that state officials have announced an evolving series of statements about blockades and fines that have left in their wake an atmosphere of fear and intimidation surrounding the eviction deadline of December 5. In response to the government issued deadline, we as faith leaders call for a lifeline, a lifeline extended by President Obama through the act of denying the final permit necessary for the Dakota Access Pipeline to continue. In light of the November 20th attacks on the water protectors by law enforcement, no other act would do more to ensure public safety and well-being during the coming winter months. With the closing days of this administration, we cannot stand by idly as the water protectors face ongoing threats and more ominous prospects.

    A Short Talk During Zazen Shunryu Suzuki Roshi (Presented during zazen on the moming of June 28, 1970, between the tenth and eleventh Sandokai lectures) YouSHOULD SIT WITH YOUR WHOLE BODY: your spine, mouth, toes, mudra. l Check on your posture during zazen. Each part of your body should practice zazen independently or separately: Your toes should prac­ tice zazen independently, your mudra should practice zazen independently, and your spine and your mouth should practice zazen independently. You should feel each part of your body doing zazen independently. Each part of your body should participate completely in zazen. Check to see that each part of your body is doing zazen independently- this is also known as shiknntaza. To think, "I am doing zazen" or "my body is doing zazen" is wrong understanding. It is a self-centered idea. The mudra is especially important. You should not feel as if you are resting your mudra on the heel of your foot for your own convenience. Your mudra should be placed in its own position. Don't move your legs for your own convenience. Your legs are practic­ ing their own zazen independently and are com pletely involved in their own pain. They are doing zazen through pain. You should all ow them to practice their own zazen. If you think you are practicing zazen, you are involved in some selfish, egotistical idea. If you think that you have a difficulty in some part of your body, then the rest of the body should help the part that is in difficulty. You are not having difficulty with some part of your body, but the part of the body is having difficulty: for example, your mudra is having difficulty.

Beginne~s Mind surrounded by so many enthusias- tic American Zen students that in 1969 he and his students moved to a large building at 300 Page Street and established Beginner's Mind Temple. Two years earlier, Zen Center had acquired the Tassajara resort and hot springs, which is at the end of a four­ teen-mile dirt road that winds through the rugged mountains of the Los Padres National Forest near the central coast of California. He and his stu­ dents created the first Zen Buddhist monastery in America, Zenshinji (Zen Mind/Heart Te mple). We were starting from scratch under Suzuki Roshi's guidance. Each year Tassajara Zen Mountain Center has two intensive practice­ period retreats: October through December, and January through March. These two practice periods include many hours of zazen (cross-legged seated meditation) each day, lectures, study, and physical work. The students are there for the entire time. In the spring and summer months (May through August), Tassajara provides a guest season for people who are attracted by the hot mineral baths and the quiet atmosphere.

    Inventing Chinese Buddhas: Identity, Authority, and Liberation in Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism Kevin Buckelew Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Kevin Buckelew All rights reserved Abstract Inventing Chinese Buddhas: Identity, Authority, and Liberation in Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism Kevin Buckelew This dissertation explores how Chan Buddhists made the unprecedented claim to a level of religious authority on par with the historical Buddha Śākyamuni and, in the process, invented what it means to be a buddha in China. This claim helped propel the Chan tradition to dominance of elite monastic Buddhism during the Song dynasty (960–1279), licensed an outpouring of Chan literature treated as equivalent to scripture, and changed the way Chinese Buddhists understood their own capacity for religious authority in relation to the historical Buddha and the Indian homeland of Buddhism. But the claim itself was fraught with complication. After all, according to canonical Buddhist scriptures, the Buddha was easily recognizable by the “marks of the great man” that adorned his body, while the same could not be said for Chan masters in the Song. What, then, distinguished Chan masters from everyone else? What authorized their elite status and granted them the authority of buddhas? According to what normative ideals did Chan aspirants pursue liberation, and by what standards did Chan masters evaluate their students to determine who was worthy of admission into an elite Chan lineage? How, in short, could one recognize a buddha in Song-dynasty China? The Chan tradition never answered this question once and for all; instead, the question broadly animated Chan rituals, institutional norms, literary practices, and visual cultures.
