Faith Leaders Call for a Standing Rock Lifeline, Not a Deadline December 5, 2016 We, the 1833 undersigned faith leaders, have come together from our diverse traditions to publicly declare our shared support of the Standing Rock Sioux Nation and their allied water protectors of Standing Rock. Recently, we have witnessed the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and the Governor of North Dakota issue eviction orders for the largest water protector camp seeking to defend the Missouri River from the Dakota Access Pipeline. In response, Standing Rock Sioux Chairman Dave Archambault II has stated, “The most dangerous thing we can do is force well-situated campers from their shelters and into the cold." While there have been promises on the part of the government to not forcibly remove those in the camp, we are aware that state officials have announced an evolving series of statements about blockades and fines that have left in their wake an atmosphere of fear and intimidation surrounding the eviction deadline of December 5. In response to the government issued deadline, we as faith leaders call for a lifeline, a lifeline extended by President Obama through the act of denying the final permit necessary for the Dakota Access Pipeline to continue. In light of the November 20th attacks on the water protectors by law enforcement, no other act would do more to ensure public safety and well-being during the coming winter months. With the closing days of this administration, we cannot stand by idly as the water protectors face ongoing threats and more ominous prospects. -

Abstract Visual and Material Culture at Hōkyōji Imperial Convent: The Significance of “Women’s Art” in Early Modern Japan by Sharon Mitsuko Yamamoto Doctor of Philosophy in History of Art University of California, Berkeley Professor Gregory Levine, Chair This dissertation focuses on the visual and material culture of Hōkyōji Imperial Buddhist Convent (Hōkyōji ama monzeki jiin) during the Edo period (1600-1868). Situated in Kyoto and in operation since the mid-fourteenth century, Hōkyōji has been the home for women from the highest echelons of society—the nobility and military aristocracy—since its foundation. The objects associated with women in the rarefied position of princess-nun offer an invaluable look into the role of visual and material culture in the lives of elite women in early modern Japan. -

James BASKIND * The Nianfo in ºbaku Zen: A Look at the Teachings of the Three Founding Masters To the Edo-period Japanese Zen monks, one of the most striking aspects of the ºbaku school was the practice of reciting the Buddha’s name (nianfo 念仏) within their teaching and training practices. For an accurate assessment of the ºbaku school’s true stance on the practice of the nianfo, however, it is necessary to investigate the writings and teachings of the school’s founding masters, the very figures who established and codified what came to be seen as standard practice: Yinyuan Longqi 隠元隆琦 (J. Ingen RyØki, 1592-1673), Muan Xingtao 木庵性瑫 (J. Mokuan ShØtØ, 1611-1684), and Jifei Ruyi 即非如一 (J. Sokuhi Nyoitsu, 1616-1671). It was the Japanese reaction to this practice that led to the accusation that the ºbaku monks were practicing an adulterated form of Zen that was contaminated by Pure Land elements. It remains, however, that much of the misunderstanding regarding nianfo practice can be assigned to the Japanese unfamiliarity with the doctrinal underpinnings of the Ming Buddhist models that the ºbaku monks brought to Japan. (Mohr 1994: 348, 364) This paper will attempt to clarify the nianfo teachings of these three foundational ºbaku masters. Chan and Pure Land Practices in China One thing that should be kept in mind when considering the Zen style of the ºbaku monks is that they were steeped in the Buddhist culture of the Ming period, replete with conspicuous Pure Land aspects. (Hirakubo 1962: 197) What appeared to the Japanese Zen community of the mid-seventeenth century as the incongruous marriage of Pure Land devotional elements within more traditional forms of Chan practice had already undergone a long courtship in China that had resulted in what seemed to the Chinese monks as a natural and legitimate union. -

Sometimes called “the tempter,” he represents our conditioned existence with all of the passions and desires that ensnare and delude us. The Buddha’s realm is the realm over which Buddhas spread their influence, teach the Dharma, and manifest wisdom and loving-kindness. Mara’s realm is the realm of good and bad, right and wrong, want and don’t want. This is the conditioned existence of chasing happiness and never quite achieving it. Finding innovative ways to express their late teacher’s inspiration, the White Plum sangha is one of the most vital in Western Buddhism. Photo by Big Mind Zen Center. Spring is blossom season in Japan. Drifts of petals like snow decorate the parks and streets. On May 15, 1995, in this season of renewal, venerable Zen master Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi Roshi wrote an inka poem bestowing final approval on his senior disciple, Tetsugen Glassman Sensei, the “eldest son” of the White Plum sangha, placed it in an envelope and https://www.lionsroar.com/white-plums-and-lizard-tails-the-story-of-maezumi-roshi-and-his-american-lineage/ 2/5/19, 1013 PM Page 1 of 16 gave it to his brothers. Hours later, before dawn broke over the trees of Tokyo, Maezumi Roshi drowned. His death shocked his successors, students, wife and children, and the Zen community at large. At age 64, he was head of one of the most vital lineages of Zen in America; he was seemingly healthy, fresh from retreat, invigorated by his work and focused on practice. Recently elected a Bishop, he was at the zenith of his sometimes rocky relationship with the Japanese Soto sect. But before he’d barely started, he was gone. Senior students scrambled for tickets and flew from points around the world to attend the cremation in Tokyo.
