“Dirt is Good” is more than just a catchy slogan. It is a philosophy that underpinned the re-launch of Unilever's detergent OMO back in 2003. The idea is geared towards changing people’s attitudes when it comes to dirt, highlighting that getting messy is good for both the body and soul. The recent OMO campaign “Futures” was created by the advertising agency Lowe Singapore, who commissioned JOOheng Tan to depict kid’s aspirational futures out of sand.

The artist who used to be a graphic designer got into sand sculpturing as a hobby in 1997. Bagging an impressive number of prizes — among them several World Championships — propelled him internationally to the status of Master sand sculptor. The masterly backdrops for the “Futures” campaign “Astronaut”, “Physicist” and “Archaeologist” are each made of 18 tons of sand, built with superior craftsmanship and high levels of detail, which incorporate shadows, shading and depth. Of course, JOOheng and the kids get hugely dirty while sculpturing, but do see for yourself, isn’t it good?
