he Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) has lifted a ban imposed on the Botswana Athletics TAssociation (BAA) for failure to ensure adherence to COVID-19 restrictions last month. The ban was imposed on the BAA after the local sports mother body discovered that a BAA approved event titled the Sports View Runners Club Track and Field Series (held from 19-20 February) drew a number of spectators and exceeded the COVID-19 restricted regulations of having 50 or less people at a single event. “This (lifting of the ban) came after continuous engagements with BNSC in discussing the drafted Competition Guidelines. It should be noted that the lifting of the ban only allows BAA to host national team activities until the 31st of March 2021,”

BAA recently released a communique to the media announcing that the ban has been lifted as of March 15. The BNSC, in their suspension let- ter, had noted that they would be willing to lift the ban provided BAA came up with proper competi- tion guidelines that would ensure that safety and health protocols would be observed in upcoming competitions and the BAA duly obliged as both parties held progressive talks. “This (lifting of the ban) came after continuous engagements with BNSC in discussing the drafted Competition Guidelines. It should be noted that the lifting of the ban only allows BAA to host national team activities until the 31st of March 2021,” BAA revealed in the press statement. In addition to the revelation of the lifting of their ban, BAA stated that the Tokyo 2020 team has travelled to to participate in competitionS organized by Athletics South Africa (ASA), namely RUIMSIG (23 March), Boksburg (27 March) and RUIMSIG Relays (30 March). The competitions will be used to qualify more athletes for the Olympic games. THE BOTSWANA GAZETTE WEDNESDAY 24 MARCH 2021 SPORT PAGE 27

omen in Sport (WASBO) have indicated that participa- tion of women across sporting codes could take a worst Wturn post COVID-19. WASBO Secretary General, Keenese Katisenge told Gazette Sport that there is a high likelihood that when the Covid-19 pandemic is over, it is likely that most men’s teams and sport will bounce back and the same might not be the case for women’s sport adding that gender inequalities that already exist in the society, the impact of Covid-1 is already being felt harder by women and girls in different areas in the society and this is also mirrored in sport. “This then translates to women’s sport and women in sport having experienced the pandemic very differently from their male counter- parts because of the inequalities and the difference in the resources available to them” said Katisenge. Katisenge further said there is therefore a need for signifcant investment in women’s sport, because in the longer-term, the dis- proportionate impact on women’s sport will worsen as unlike men’s teams and sport, highlighting that the exposure they receive gener- ate far less money than men’s sport. “ The impact will not be felt at elite and professional level only but also at grassroots level, as such efforts on development and re- tention will have to be doubled, because if not, then this could have an impact on women’s sport for years to come” added Katisenge. She also stated that there is also a huge need for emotional support during and post this period due to the loss of loved ones and disrup- tion in the normal and daily activities, routines and lives brought about by the pandemic. “WASBO had engaged Mentorship for Excellence International to provide mentorship and counselling/ emotional support for ath- PHOTO CREDIT; DeepTake Visuals letes with disability from the Special Olympics for 8 weeks” said Katisenge. More needs to be done and as an WORST FOR WOMEN IN organization” concluded Katisenge.
