THE volatile situation that unfolded at Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal this week, leading to the arrest of former President Jacob Zuma, kept the country on tenterhooks amid fears of a bloody confrontation between the police and the large number of Zuma’s supporters. Despite the menacing posture from the large crowd that converged on the former President’s homestead, the men and women in blue exer- cised commendable restraint, especially when inflammatory speeches were made by speakers at the impromptu rally held at Zuma’s home- stead. Police should be commended again for their cool headedness at a time when some support- ers in the crowd brazenly brandished their guns and fired shots in the air – with impunity. This was obviously a provocative by those who ap- peared to have come to Nkandla ready for a vio- lent standoff with the police should Zuma be ar- rested. To aggravate the volatile situation, most of the supporters also flouted the Covid 19 rules by not wearing masks and adhering to social- distancing regulations. This was a shameful act by angry people who, instead of choosing legal and peaceful means to express their dissenting views regard- ing the decision by the Constitutional Court to jail Zuma, they resorted to insults to provoke the police into action.

A LESSON FOR ALL UNREPENTANT: FW de Klerk says warns NPA against prosecutions that will divide South Africa Now that the former president finally decid- ed to hand himself over to the police, we call on his supporters to stay calm and respect the rule of law. Thankfully, he took the decision to take “DON’T WASTE RESOURCES ON PROBE INTO it on the chin and to rather pursue legal means to challenge his conviction and jail term further.
