Examiner, USA THE IMPACT OF THE COMPACT 1 The big buzz about small formats E VERYTHING MAKES A COMEBACK. There is an eternal renaissance of essential things. In journalism, design, literature and art. Things tend to simplify themselves. As life in big cities turns more chaotic, technology becomes more accessible with wireless, fast communication available to larger mass- es of the population. For the printed media, this translates into smaller formats, more reader-friendly for users who seek simpler storytelling, quicker messages, and who seem to prefer, as in everything else, the smaller packages. In the case of newspapers, we have had to wait a long time and climb a steep mountain to get to this exciting moment in which more newspapers are look- ing at smaller formats as an option. For many, it is already a reality. Conversion from broadsheet to tabloid has paid off: Readers like it, advertisers get used to it faster than anyone thought, and the “wave” of tabloid conversions extends globally. Even the United States is taking a peek into what some of their news- papers will look like in a format other than the huge broadsheet that has served as the canvas for decades. -

All rights reserved. Abstract During the past several years, as traditional news operations have faced sharp declines in circulation, advertising, viewership, and audiences, and as they have begun to make a seemingly unrelenting series of cuts in the newsroom budgets, scholars and professionals have been seeking formulas or models designed to reverse the trend. During those same years, many of the major news organizations that dominated the landscape a generation ago, those that David Halberstam called “The Powers That Be,” have lost their leadership role and been absorbed by other companies. This paper argues that while there is good reason to worry about the decline in what might be called “boots-on-the-ground” journalism, there are reasons to be hopeful. While most of those concerned with the topic have urged structural changes in ownership, this paper argues that the key is leadership. To understand the demands on leaders, it is essential to understand which of three motives is most important to the publication’s owners: profits, influence, or personal prestige. Each motive presents distinct challenges and opportunities. Looking at the fate of a number of large media organizations over the past decade, the paper argues that the most important model for success is outstanding leadership that combines a talent for business, entrepreneurship and innovation with a profound commitment to great journalism. -

With the 2012 Republican presidential primary race in high gear this fall, students packed buses to nearby New Hampshire to meet presidential candidates as the IOP conducted timely younger voter public opinion research in Iowa and the Granite State. Welcome to the Institute of Politics at Harvard University Trey Grayson, Director The 2012 election cycle is in high gear, and the past six months have been fast- paced at the Institute. As you will note in this newsletter, the IOP has been at the forefront of election and campaign-related programming, with events, conferences and younger voter research unavailable anywhere else. One of my biggest goals since beginning service as the Institute’s Director has been to improve how the IOP utilizes technology – in an effort to maximize efficiency internally and best distribute and share our content externally to audiences inter- ested in politics and public service. Toward this end, we are very pleased this month to unveil the new online home for John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum programming at www.jfkjrforum.org (see feature on next page). The new microsite not only has a state-of-the art design but also can broadcast Forum programming in a format allowing Forum events to be streamed live or viewed later on any computer or device, including iPads and iPhones. We are also hard at work building a new IOP-wide website – scheduled to be completed next fall – which improves our current website layout and better integrates key online content from Institute students and student publications like the Harvard Political Review. -

WINTER 2003 Kennedy School of Message from the Director INSTITUTE Government Spring 2003 Fellows Forum Renaming New Members of Congress OF POLITICS An Intern’s Story Laughter in the Forum: Jon Stewart on Politics and Comedy Welcome to the Institute of Politics at Harvard University D AN G LICKMAN, DIRECTOR The past semester here at the Institute brought lots of excitement—a glance at this newsletter will reveal some of the fine endeavors we’ve undertaken over the past months. But with a new year come new challenges. The November elections saw disturbingly low turnout among young voters, and our own Survey of Student Attitudes revealed widespread political disengagement in American youth. This semester, the Institute of Politics begins its new initiative to stop the cycle of mutual dis- engagement between young people and the world of politics. Young people feel that politicians don’t talk to them; and we don’t. Politicians know that young people don’t vote; and they don’t. The IOP’s new initiative will focus on three key areas: participation and engagement in the 2004 elections; revitalization of civic education in schools; and establishment of a national database of political internships. The students of the IOP are in the initial stages of research to determine the best next steps to implement this new initiative. Cambridge University Press 052161807X - The Cultural Roots of American Islamicism Timothy Marr Excerpt More information Imagining Ishmael: Introducing American Islamicism In April of 1997, a coalition of sixteen American Muslim organizations petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to have a larger-than-life representation of the Prophet Muhammad sandblasted off the north wall overlooking the nation’s central legal chamber. The Muslim groups took offense at the ivory marble statue that depicts a robed and bearded Muhammad with a curved sword in one hand and the Qur’an in the other. Part of the original Beaux- Arts architecture designed in the early 1930s by Adolph A. Weinman, the statue stands between Charlemagne and Justinian as one of eighteen great law givers of history. The presence of the frieze in such an official location, the Muslim leaders maintained, demonstrated insensitivity to Islamic prohi- bitions against displaying images of the Prophet, and the scimitar perpetuated stereotypes about Muslims as “intolerant conquerors.” Deeply committed to removing the statue, they offered to pay the expenses for an appropri- ate replacement. Chief Justice William Rehnquist, however, rejected their request. He claimed that the figure represented an honor rather than a form of idol worship and that the sword was a general symbol of justice. He also noted that any alterations in the frieze would not only destroy the artistic integrity of the whole, but also violate a 1949 statute against the removal of statues from the Court’s property. While he agreed with the literature handed out to visitors to the Bench that the “figure is a well-intentioned attempt by the sculptor to honor Muhammad,” he nonetheless also agreed with the Muslim protesters that “it bears no resemblance to Muhammad.”1 This ivory marble Muhammad and Rehnquist’s defense of it are but recent examples of the ways in which U.S. -
