The Life and Death of Socialist Zionism Jason Schulman (Published in New Politics, vol. 9, no. 3 (new series), whole no. 35, Summer 2003) In previous decades it was not uncommon for democratic leftists, Jewish ones in particular, to believe that the state of Israel was on the road to exemplifying—as Irving Howe once put it—“the democratic socialist hope of combining radical social change with political freedom.”1 But times have obviously changed. Today, no one would argue with the assertion that Israeli socialism is “is going the way of the kibbutz farmer,” even if the government continues to be the major shareholder in many Israeli banks, retains majority control in state-owned enterprises, owns a considerable percent of the country's land, and exerts considerable influence in most sectors of the economy.2 The kibbutzim themselves, held up as “the essence of the socialist-Zionist ideal of collectivism and egalitarianism,” are fast falling victim “to the pursuit of individual fulfillment.”3 The Labor Party is ever more estranged from Israel’s trade union movement, and when it governs it does so less and less like a social-democratic party, and its economic program has become ever more classically liberal. To many Israelis, who remember the years of Labor bureaucratic power, “socialism” means little more than “state elitism.” In examining “what happened,” it is worthwhile to ask what precisely the content of Israeli socialism was from its inception. There are essentially two narratives of “actually-existing” Labor (Socialist) Zionism. One argues that the most important of the Zionist colonists were utopian socialists who had no intent to be either exploiter or exploited. -

TO ALBENA my wife, who had no small part in the making of this book be'a-havah rabbah FOREWORD MODERN or political Zionism began in 1897 when Theodor Herzl con- vened the First Zionist Congress and reached its culmination in 1948 when the State of Israel was born. In the half century of its career it rose from a parochial enterprise to a conspicuous place on the inter- national arena. History will be explored in vain for a national effort with roots imbedded in a remoter past or charged with more drama and world significance. Something of its uniqueness and grandeur will, the author hopes, flow out to the reader from the pages of this narrative. As a repository of events this book is not as inclusive as the author would have wished, nor does it make mention of all those who labored gallantly for the Zionist cause across the world and in Pal- estine. Within the compass allotted for this work, only the more significant events could be included, and the author can only crave forgiveness from the actors living and dead whose names have been omitted or whose roles have perhaps been understated. -
Model Zionist Conference
Model Zionist Conference The Model Zionist Conference material is divided into nine sections, one for each delegation: six pro-Zionist delegations and three anti-Zionist delegations. Pro-Zionist: 1) Political Zionism 2) Religious Zionism 3) Cultural Zionism 4) Socialist Zionism 5) Revisionist Zionism 6) Conservative Judaism Anti-Zionist: 1) Reform Judaism 2) Agudat Yisrael 3) Universalistic Socialism (Bund) Because some religious groups did not have formal positions on Zionism, the source sheets make use of the perspectives of leading personalities. Each section contains a brief description of the group’s ideological position, short biographies of main proponents, and where possible, citations. The citations were for the most part originally written in German, Hebrew or Yiddish and this unit relies heavily on the translations by Arthur Hertzberg found in his book, The Zionist Idea: A Historical Analysis and Reader. Others were taken from The Jew in the Modern World: A Documentary History by Paul Mendes-Flohr and Jehuda Reinharz. Downloaded from www.lookstein.org Political Zionism Main proponents: Theodor Herzl, Max Nordau, Leo Pinsker Philosophy: Many European Jews, imbued with the spirit of the enlightenment, strove to become accepted in general society. Many found, however, that in spite of the lofty ideals of emancipation, Jews were unable to gain full acceptance in non-Jewish society because of anti-Semitic barriers. The subtle anti-Semitism of Western Europe and the physical anti-Semitism of Eastern Europe drove many Jews to Zionism. This brand of Zionism was motivated not by the desire to revive Jewish culture, but by the drive to create a haven where Jews, unhampered by anti-Semitism, would be free to live enlightened lives. -

After a quick glance at the early Zionism - the Hibbat Zion group and Yehuda Leib Pinsker - the study examines the birth of Zionism as a political movement and itsfitting in the milieu of the late Nineteenth century nationalisms, from which Theodor Herz! was certainly inspired. The Herzlian Zionism was just one of the currents in the renascences movement of the Hebrew nation. With regard to this, one must remember two other currents: the Spiritual (or Cultural) Zionism -Ahad Ha 'am, its leader, thought that recovering the sentiment of national cohesion was possible although the Hebrew People would have remained in the Diaspora - and the philanthropic Zionism - spread through the Jews of Western Europe, it consisted in relief activities and fimd raising-. The last part of the article focuses on the development of the Zionist movement in Italy. ABSTRACTS ABSTRACTS The Fantastic in Ya’akov Cahan’s Play David King of Israel: Psychical Dialectic in the Spirit of Zionism Ofir Maman Ya’akov Cahan’s play, ‘David King of Israel’, was one of the main productions of the Bamatenu (Our Stage) children’s theater in 1947-1948. It tells the story of Uri’s marvelous journey from the diaspora to the fatherland in the quest of a cave where King David sleeps on golden panels with a water-filled vessel at his side, and whenever the water spills into his palms he awakes to save his people. Cahan’s drama, based on legends in Jewish tradition and European culture, contains an array of fantastic characters. This article discusses Uri’s coming of age and its parallel with the fulfillment of the Zionistic dream. In other words, it examines the connection between ideology and fantasy and shows how the play illuminates the manner in which a psychic process is woven into the Zionistic worldview. It also looks at the play’s age appropriateness for young audiences. The Substance of Man and the World in the Mystical Union Experience of Rabbi Kook Elchanan Shilo The aim of this paper is to describe the mental state during the mystical union experience according to Rabbi Kook’s philosophy and compare it to Chabad’s. In Hassidism, when man unites with God he annuls himself. By contrast, according to Rabbi Kook, when man unites with God he empowers being and reality. Some scholars have noted Rabbi Kook’s innovation but none has attempted to explain its Kabbalistic-philosophical base. -

General Introduction: The Legacy of Jewish-Russian Literature By Maxim D. Shrayer DUAL LITERARY IDENTITIES What are cultures measured by? Cultural contributions are difficult to quantify and even harder to qualify without a critical judgment in hand. In the case of verbal arts, and of literature specifically, various criteria of formal perfection and originality, significance in literary history, and aspects of time, place, and milieu all contribute to the ways in which one regards a writer’s contribution. In the case of Jewish culture in Diaspora, and specifically of Jewish writing created in non-Jewish languages adopted by Jews, the reckoning of a writer’s status is riddled with a set of powerful contrapositions. Above all else, there is the duality, or multiplicity, of a writer’s own iden- tity—both Jewish and German (Heinrich Heine) or French (Marcel Proust) or Russian (Isaac Babel) or Polish (Julian Tuwim) or Hungarian (Imre Kertész) or Brazilian (Clarice Lispector) or Canadian (Mordechai Richler) or American (Bernard Malamud). Then there is the dividedly redoubled perspec- tive of a Diasporic Jew: both an in-looking outsider and an out-looking insider. And there is the language of writing itself, not always one of the writer’s native setting, not necessarily one in which a writer spoke to his or her own parents or non-Jewish childhood friends, but in some cases a second or third or forth language—acquired, mastered, and made one’s own in a flight from home.1 Evgeny Shklyar (1894–1942), a Jewish-Russian poet and a Lithuanian patriot who translated into Russian the text of the Lithuanian national anthem 1 In the context of Jewish-Russian history and culture, the juxtaposition between a “divided” and a “redoubled” identity goes back to the writings of the critic and polemicist Iosif Bikerman (1867–1941? 1942?), who stated in 1910, on the pages of the St. -

(International Travel Fair) in Berlin, and had a great chance to see the "world" on show in six huge halls where I managed to pick up quite a few new ideas and destinations. I was also amazed at Berlin which is certainly one of the most exciting cities in Europe today. The blending of the old and new as well as the great Museums and Galleries really put Berlin on par with Paris, London, Rome and Prague. Carol and I decided to go back to South Africa for a eight-day vacation and chose to concentrate only on the Cape and Garden Route. Our plan was to spend two days in Knysna, 2 in Piettenberg and the rest in Stellenbosch and Cape Town. After an excellent SAA flight, we carried on directly to George and drove to our small (8-room) bed and breakfast lodge on Leisure Island overlooking the Heads and Featherbed Nature Reserve in Knysna. We were captivated and decided to cancel the last three days and to stay on in the Garden Route. -
