Specifically, it analyses the extent to which a dominant discourse of inherently tense binary Jewish-Muslim relations exists and how individual Jewish and Muslim writers and interreligious dialogue activists navigate this difficult socio-political terrain. While I conceptualize some aspects of literary writing and interreligious dialogue as counter-narratives, this thesis does not simply seek to counterbalance the dominant narrative of polarization found in the media, but to demonstrate, first, how this narrative constructs public Jewish and Muslim identities and shapes the terrain on which interactions between Jews and Muslims occur. My thesis reveals that Jewish and Muslim writers and interreligious activists are deeply invested in challenging the oppositional model of Jewish-Muslim relations. However, my research also suggests that their level of success depends in large part on their ability to navigate normative understandings of Jewishness and Muslimness that are often overdetermined by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. First, this thesis traces how Jewish-Muslim relations are defined and constructed in the media, focusing on the national dailies Le Monde and Le Figaro due to their considerable agenda-setting and framing power as elite and prestigious sites of journalistic expression. Subsequently, I consider how a set of contemporary novelists, Emilie Frèche, Thierry Cohen, and Nadia Hathroubi-Safsaf, formulate their visions of intergroup relations within this broader context. The novelists in this project have been included in the extent to which their works can be read as—and often are explicitly stated by these authors to be—a set of political interventions into the contemporary and highly politicized category of Jewish-Muslim relations. Finally, I examine how Jewish and Muslim activists promote interreligious dialogue and the challenges they face in doing so within a French republican framework that privileges the non-differentiation of ethnoreligious specificities. Last, but not least, I thank my family, friends, and cats back in Singapore for their constant support, even if they have not always understood what I have been doing all these years. 8 Chapter One: Introduction and Background In recent decades, with antisemitism and Islamophobia on the rise, relations between France’s Jews and Muslims have been depicted as increasingly tense. In particular, a group of French writers have pinpointed the source of a new antisemitism to be France’s Muslim population (Brenner 2002, 2004; Draï 2002; Taguieff 2002; Trigano 2003; Finkielkraut 2003; Attal 2004; Giniewski 2005). With state school seen as a hotbed of antisemitism, Jews have increasingly turned to private Jewish schools. According to Kimberly Arkin (2014), this sense of siege has in turn led to private-schooled (mainly Sephardi) Jewish youths racially constructing their Jewishness as separate from and hostile to Muslims and Arabs (and ‘white’ French people), as a defence mechanism to a perception of being under attack from both broader French society and, especially, Muslims and Arabs. This situation is partly a result of the particular histories of France’s colonial presence in the Maghreb and of France’s related postcolonial realities (see Chronology, Table 1 in Appendix). Economic crisis, high unemployment rates, especially for segments of Muslims, increasing antisemitic and anti-Muslim discourse and hate crimes, as well as the looming threat of further acts of terrorism, have only complicated issues and hardened outlooks.

In the words of one literary critic, "The Algerian war has been, in a sense, one big murder mystery."1 This may be true, but literary accounts portray the "mystery" of the civil war—and propose to solve it—in sharply divergent ways. The primary aim of this study is to examine how three of the most celebrated 1990s novels depict—organize, analyze, interpret, and "solve"—the civil war. I analyze and interpret these novels—by Assia Djebar, Yasmina Khadra, and Boualem Sansal—through a deep contextualization, both in terms of Algerian history and in the novels' contemporary setting. This is particularly important in this case, since the civil war is so contested, and is poorly understood. Using the novels' thematic content as a cue for deeper understanding, I engage through them and with them a number of elements crucial to understanding the civil war: Algeria's troubled nationalist legacy; its stagnant one-party regime; a fear, distrust, and poor understanding of the Islamist movement and the insurgency that erupted in 1992; and the unending, horrifically bloody violence that piled on throughout the 1990s.

    Chapter 1 Writings on the Wall Chapter 1 A Concise History of German Anti-Semitism In 1942, in a suburb of Berlin known as Wannsee, Reinhard Heydrich (head of the infamous Nazi secret police, the Gestapo) finalized the Nazi commitment to the extermination of the Jews within the Third Reich’s sphere of influence (Gilbert 281). According to some historians, these announcements made at Wannsee were the culmination of step-by-step decisions that had brought about what Adolf Hitler meant when, in 1920, he announced the Nazi party’s position that “None but members of the Nation may be citizens of the State. None but those of German blood, whatever their creed, may be members of the Nation. No Jew, therefore, may be a member of the Nation” (qtd. in Gilbert 23). Both ancient and contemporary European and German anti-Semitic forces were about to collide in Wannsee. That collision tragically ignited one of history’s most devastating and most documented genocidal conflagrations—what today is commonly called the “Holocaust.” Some historians suggest the Holocaust was the result of the Nazi targeting of Jews as scapegoats by suggesting that world-Jewry collectively had had something to do with the “stab in the back” that brought the World War I German war effort and World War I itself to a turbulent end. Some researchers suggest European Jewry was singled out for “special treatment” because they, the Jews, were somehow responsible for the unexpectedly final battlefield- failures, the consequent enormous war reparation payments, the collapsing stock markets and the subsequent spiraling inflation that financially crippled the German nation.

Both had been part of the Russian Pale of Settlement until its dissolution in 1917; they were then divided by the Romanian Army‘s occupation of Bessarabia in 1918 with the establishment of a well-guarded border along the Dniester River between two newly-formed states, Greater Romania and the Soviet Union. At its core, the project focuses in comparative context on the traumatic and multi-faceted confrontation with these two modernizing states: exclusion, discrimination and growing violence in Bessarabia; destruction of religious tradition, agricultural resettlement, and socialist re-education and assimilation in Soviet Transnistria. It examines also the similarities in both states‘ striving to create model subjects usable by the homeland, as well as commonalities within Jewish responses on both sides of the border. Contacts between Jews on either side of the border remained significant after 1918 despite the efforts of both states to curb them, thereby necessitating a transnational view in order to examine Jewish political and social life in borderland regions.

Il lui faudra alors déterminer une stratégie. Tout en se donnant l’apparence de crédibilité politique, le FN devra « radicaliser » son discours afin de retrouver un électorat, sonélectorat1. Les faits semblent donner raison à cette hypothèse deux ans après. Pourquoi le FN aurait-il régressé ? Toutes les conditions sont remplies pour qu’une extrême droite nationale – populiste prospère en France… C’est sur un fond de décor social dégradé qu’on peut essayer d’analyser ce qui s’est produit au congrès de Tours en 2011. En quittant la présidence du FN, J.M. Le Pen a tourné une page de l’histoire du FN. On peut même dire que c’est une nouvelle histoire qui commence. Deux lignes sont clairement apparues dans ce congrès nous replongeant dans l’histoire des extrêmes–droites. Il est nécessaire d’opérer un « retour en arrière afin d’éclairer le présent, tant il est vrai que l’histoire est une maladie dont on ne guérit jamais tout à fait »2 . On a pu observer l’opposition entre une droite contre-révolutionnaire et la nouvelle droite de Marine Le Pen sur une ligne qu’on pourrait qualifier de « nationale-républicaine », voire de populiste et bonapartiste.
