Anyone who wants to know what is going on with Burmese minorities and their treatment by the Burmese Army and the government in general, ought to read this book. It's a must.Since my father fought against the Japanese in Burma during WW II, my wife and I visited Burma in December, 2015 to retrace his steps. While all outward appearance today is one of normalcy, you know there is something wrong under the surface. The military seems to be just under the waves.Unfortunately, the same is now also going on against the Rohingyas: Under the Army's urging, the Buddhist majority is marauding against them.I could go on, but you'd rather want to read the book yourself. A bit depressing, but 90% of the world doesn't live in mansions and go to steak houses.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Karen fights for freedomBy 52PinkA harrowing account of life under Burmese rule as told by Zoya, the daughter of a prominent resistance fighter assassinated by government forces. The author who is herself now residing in the UK as a political refugee writes of the brutality inflicted on the of Burma in what is called ethnic cleansing. The book at various times evokes different emotions - sadness, horror, happiness and guilt - sadness for loss of innocence, horror for the brutality and deprivation these people endure, happiness for the simple childhood and guilt because the world basically ignored the plight of these forgotten people.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Tragic - but inspiring.By KuboTold with heart and maturity. A must read. This book is the lotus flower rising out of the pond - a well told story of dire circumstances and injustice and Zoya's struggle to give a voice to the movement of her people that the international community could hear and understand.

Zoya Phan was born in the remote jungles of Burma to the Karen tribe, which for decades has been resisting Burma’s brutal military junta. At age 13, her peaceful childhood was shattered when the Burmese army attacked. So began two terrible years of running, as Zoya was forced to join thousands of refugees hiding in the jungle. Her family scattered, her brothers went deeper into the war, and Zoya, close to death, found shelter at a Thai , where she stayed until 2005 when she fled to the U.K. and claimed asylum. There, in a twist of fate, she became the public face of the Burmese people’s fight for freedom. This is her inspirational story. About the AuthorZoya Phan is a 28-year-old ethnic Karen refugee from Burma. As a teenager she was forced to flee her country after her village was attacked by the Burmese Army. She now lives in and works for the human rights organization Burma Campaign UK.
