Of Dahlia Myths.Pub
Cavanilles’ detailed illustrations established the dahlia in the botanical taxonomy In 1796, the third volume of “Icones” introduced two more dahlia species, named D. coccinea and D. rosea. They also were initially thought to be sunflowers and had been brought to Spain as part of the Alejandro Malaspina/Luis Neé expedition. More than 600 drawings brought the plant collection to light. Cavanilles, whose extensive correspondence included many of Europe’s leading botanists, began to develop a following far greater than his title of “sacerdote” (priest, in French Abbé) ever would have offered. The A. J. Cavanilles archives of the present‐day Royal Botanical Garden hold the botanist’s sizable oeu‐ vre, along with moren tha 1,300 letters, many dissertations, studies, and drawings. In time, Cavanilles achieved another goal: in 1801, he was finally appointed professor and director of the garden. Regrettably, he died in Madrid on May 10, 1804. The Cavanillesia, a tree from Central America, was later named for this famousMaterial Spanish scientist. ANDERS DAHL The lives of Dahl and his Spanish ‘godfather’ could not have been any more different. Born March 17,1751, in Varnhem town (Västergötland), this Swedish botanist struggled with health and financial hardship throughout his short life. While attending school in Skara, he and several teenage friends with scientific bent founded the “Swedish Topographic Society of Skara” and sought to catalogue the natural world of their community. With his preacher father’s support, the young Dahl enrolled on April 3, 1770, at Uppsala University in medicine, and he soon became one of Carl Linnaeus’ students. -

Swedish Interests in Times of European Change
Swedish interests in times of European change Speach by Ulf Kristersson, Europahuset, 16th of May 2018 The spoken word applies Ulf Kristersson, Europahuset, 16th of May 2018 First of all, I would like to extend my warmest thanks to Katarina Areskough Mascarenhas for giving me the opportunity to come and say a few words about the development and future of European cooperation, what it means for Sweden, and the role I see our country playing within the EU. *** On the 31st of August 1961 Prime Minister Harold Macmillan announced in the United Kingdom’s House of Commons that the UK would apply for membership of the European Economic Community, or the EEC, the predecessor of the modern EU. History – or rather Charles de Gaulle – stood in Macmillan’s way, however, and it would take the UK more than a decade to finally gain membership. The process saw several vetoes from the French President, and eventually his resignation and death, before the UK became a member. Some things have not changed; every time the UK moves to change its relationship with Europe, its actions have an affect on everyone else, including Sweden. It is the same story repeating itself. Within a few weeks, Sweden’s relationship with the EEC would also be determined in a way that would have a significant impact on the European politics debate in Sweden for the next thirty years. The business community, the Liberal People’s Party, and not least my own party pushed for membership. In the 1962 elections, my predecessor Gunnar Hecksher appeared on election posters bearing the message ‘Yes to Europe – for freedom and security’. -

Chairman's Message 2016
of our assets. An asset manager and active owner such as Industrivärden should not carry too much debt, since it would restrict our flexibility over time. We shall therefore have a positive cash flow after paying a dividend to our shareholders. The personnel changes at the CEO and Chairman level that took place in several of our portfolio compa- nies in 2015 were followed by additional changes in 2016. Hans Biörck took over as Chairman of Skanska, Anders Bouvin was appointed as new Group Chief Executive at Handelsbanken, and Börje Ekholm was named as new CEO at Ericsson. These changes feel right and will hope- fully lead to greater value creation in the years ahead. I am pleased to note that both Volvo and Sandvik are now developing in a positive direction. The companies’ new management teams, headed by Martin Lundstedt and Björn Rosengren, respectively, are doing a fine job. At SCA, the Board decided to propose to the coming AGM that the company be split into separate forest pro- ducts and hygiene businesses. Industrivärden strongly sup- ports this and believes it will create value over time. The well-timed and well-considered rights issue in SSAB was successful, and Industrivärden subscribed for its allotment Chairman’s message of SEK 0.6 billion. Continued synergies following the mer- ger with Rautaruukki were realized in 2016. In early 2016 the Board adopted a refined strategy and Our basic premise at Industrivärden is that decen- new goals for Industrivärden. During the past year these tralization creates value. -
