  • 2019 Woman and Nature: an Ecofeminist Study of Indira Goswami's
Volume: II, Issue: II ISSN: 2581-5857 An International Peer-Reviewed GAP BODHI TARU - Open Access Journal of Humanities WOMAN AND NATURE: AN ECOFEMINIST STUDY OF INDIRA GOSWAMI’S Dr. Sadaf Shah Sr. Assistant Professor Department of English University of Jammu The Blue-necked God In 1970s, Ecofeminism emerged as a social and political movement with the increasing consciousness of the connections between women and nature. Ecofeminists believe that there is a close relationship between the domination of nature and exploitation of woman. French feminist Françoise d’Eaubonne who first coined the term “Ecofeminism” in her book Feminism or Death (1974) urges the women to lead ecological revolution to save the planet Earth and form new relationships between humanity and nature as well as man and woman. The development of ecofeminism is greatly affected by both ecological movements and feminism. Indira Goswami is a well known writer from one of the north east states of India namely Assam. In her fictional writings, she has shown strong ecofeminist concerns. In the novel The Blue- necked God, Goswami depicts the exploitation and poverty of widows, who have been left behind in the holy city of lord Krishna, Vrindavan by their families after the death of their husbands. Both widows and nature are exploited by men. Man is shown as cruel and greedy who can go to any extent in exploiting woman and degrading environment for his own progress. It is the woman only who shares a close bond with nature and contributes to its protection and preservation. Key words: Ecofeminism, Widows, Women, Nature, Men, Exploitation, Oppression, Preservation, Protection, Degradation, Solace.

II Quarterly report Nov to Dec 2010 On 9-11-2010 Kavali - Kothasatram and Indranagar villages visited by Mr.Sagar. 52 children registered from 1st class to 5th class. Only 41 of the 52 village children were attending that day. The remaining children didn’t attend due to rain. We asked the children some questions related on their subjects (Telugu, Science, Social for classes 3rd, 4th, 5th). The children responded well. We counseled the children to come to school every day, and to study well to make a brighter future for themselves. We met with Mr. Srinivas, Head Master of the school. He told that children are attending school regularly. There was less percentage of attendance in that week because of rain and festivals. Before the Dusshera holidays, the school conducted quarterly examinations. Children wrote well, and achieved good percentages in many areas. Experiences of children: Pamanchi Upendra – 5th Class: I am coming to school daily and I am studying well. I got 72% of marks in Quarterly. Aragala Sivayya – 5th Class: I am studying well. • A Feminist Reading of an Unfinished Autobiography
www.galaxyimrj.com Galaxy: International Multidisciplinary Research journal ISSN 2278-9529 The Metamorphosed Self: A Feminist Reading of Indira Goswami’s An Unfinished Autobiography Archana Gupta Research Scholar Department of English and Modern European Languages University of Lucknow Lucknow, India What distinguishes the story of people with an established public achievement and personality is a consistent relationship, a sort of harmony, between outward experience and inward growth of unfolding, between incidents and the spiritual digesting of them, so that each circumstance, each incident, instead of being an anomalous fact, becomes a part of a process and a revelation of something within the personality. (Pascal 10) Having this purpose, this article throws light on the gradual development of the personality of the well-known writer Indira Goswami through some striking revelations of her life. It is an account of her journey from “feminine” to “feminist self” and then her final evolution into “female self” (Showalter 35-36). It traces her transformation from “self-effacing” woman into an assertive autonomous human being. This paper brings into light the metamorphosed self of the author, who got purged in the hellish fire of the misfortunes of her life. The term “metamorphosis” has been borrowed from Franz Kafka’s novella Metamorphosis in which the hero, Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into an insect. The literal meaning of the term “metamorphosis” is “transformation”. The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines the term “metamorphosis” as it is a process in which somebody or something changes completely into something different (963). The transition of a person from one form to another takes place in various stages and it is a gradual process over a period of time.
