    UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Lazy, the Idle, the Industrious: Discourse and Practice of Work and Productivity in Late Ottoman Society A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Melis Hafez 2012 © Copyright by Melis Hafez 2012 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Lazy, the Idle, the Industrious: Discourse and Practice of Work and Productivity in Late Ottoman Society by Melis Hafez Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2012 Professor James L. Gelvin, Chair This dissertation traces the establishment of a binary between work and laziness from 1839 to 1920, the last century of the Ottoman Empire. Over this period, Ottoman society experienced an epochal shift in the discourses and practices of work. This study examines this shift, first, by exploring how concepts of work and productivity were moralized, socially practiced, militarized and politicized in a non-European modernity project, and second, by demonstrating how this emergent discourse, formulated as an issue of ‘national’ importance, became a constitutive element of the general nation-formation process within the last Ottoman century. I examine the configuration and development of the moralistic discourse of an ‘Islamic work ethic’ as an integral part of creating productive citizens. To do this, I consult an underutilized source, morality books, which display the connection between the mobilization for productivity, modern ii conceptualizations of body and time, and nation formation. Emphasizing the role of social practice in emergent discourses, I investigate how the bureaucratic reforms of the state in the last Ottoman century played a pivotal role in the transformation of concepts and practices of work.

However, we performed its 1st bibliometric analysis of the last five years (from 2016 to 2020). The data from WoS was retrieved on 8th February 2021. In this period, BRIAC has published seven hundred and fifty-seven documents (n=757), majorly comprising research articles (n=665), reviews (n=86), and editorials (n=6). In all publications, exactly 2519 authors, 838 institutes or departments, and 77 countries have contributed. For numerical representations, we designed the publication and citation clubs. One thousand four hundred and thirty-four (n=1434) citations were noted. The total h-index was found to be 11, while the citation per item was recorded to be 1.89. The unofficial impact factor is 1.93. The calculation is based on citations in 2020 (498), divided by papers published in 2018-2019 (258).

Ülkemizdeki en geniş katılımlı fizik kongrelerini gerçekleştiren Türk Fizik Derneği’nin düzenlediği kongreler, fizik biliminin tüm alt dallarını kapsamaktadır. Türk Fizik Derneği 37. Uluslararası Fizik Kongresi (TFD-37); Atom ve Molekül Fiziği, Uygulamalı Fizik, Yoğun Madde Fiziği, Enerji ve Uygulamaları, Yüksek Enerji, Parçacık ve Plazma Fiziği, Malzeme Bilimi ve Uygulamaları, Matematiksel Fizik, Astrofizik ve Uygulamaları, Medikal Fizik ve Uygulamaları, Nükleer Fizik, Fizik Eğitimi ve Uygulamaları konularını içermektedir. TFD kongreleri, fizik temel bilim dalındaki en güncel bilimsel çalışmaların, uluslararası platformda akademisyenler, bilim dünyasına yeni adım atmış genç araştırmacılar ile fizik temel bilimine yıllarını vermiş hocalarımızın buluştuğu bir ortam oluşturarak paylaşılmasını ve bilgi alışverişini sağlamayı amaçlar. III TFD-37 Kongremize yapılan başvurular arasından bilim kurulu üyelerimizin değerlendirmeleri sonucunda 200 den fazla sözlü bildiri, 60 adet poster bildiri kongrede sunulmak üzere kabul edilmiştir. Türk Fizik Derneği 37.     Jo Calvino on…being a weightlifter, legacy, sacrifice and retirement November 21, 2014 Our new trustee, British weightlifting legend Jo Calvino, talks to us about her life, career, the state of weightlifting in England and what’s next for her. In this fifth and final article in the series, Jo talks to us about what it means to be a weightlifter, what she has left to do in the sport, the sacrifices she has made on her journey, her Spanish side and possible retirement from the sport. ‘I Am a Weightlifter’ I can’t actually believe that I have been weightlifting as long as I have. It doesn’t feel that long – sometimes it does but it is 21 years this month (November 2014). It’s only really this year that I’ve started to sit back and look at my career. When I won my 19th senior title I thought that’s quite an achievement and if it was someone in track and field or swimming there would be a lot more hype around it. We’re starting to get some good results in Europe now and part of that is the level playing field; WADA are catching athletes from countries that are trying to catch the system, I really believe that the European Championships is the toughest continental championship in our sport. The Crystal Palace Weightlifting Club has been based at the National Sports Centre for 13 plus years, so every time I compete nationally or within Great Britain it is for Crystal Palace – they’re my registered club.
