  • Jo Calvino On…Being a Weightlifter, Legacy, Sacrifice and Retirement
Jo Calvino on…being a weightlifter, legacy, sacrifice and retirement November 21, 2014 Our new trustee, British weightlifting legend Jo Calvino, talks to us about her life, career, the state of weightlifting in England and what’s next for her. In this fifth and final article in the series, Jo talks to us about what it means to be a weightlifter, what she has left to do in the sport, the sacrifices she has made on her journey, her Spanish side and possible retirement from the sport. ‘I Am a Weightlifter’ I can’t actually believe that I have been weightlifting as long as I have. It doesn’t feel that long – sometimes it does but it is 21 years this month (November 2014). It’s only really this year that I’ve started to sit back and look at my career. When I won my 19th senior title I thought that’s quite an achievement and if it was someone in track and field or swimming there would be a lot more hype around it. We’re starting to get some good results in Europe now and part of that is the level playing field; WADA are catching athletes from countries that are trying to catch the system, I really believe that the European Championships is the toughest continental championship in our sport. The Crystal Palace Weightlifting Club has been based at the National Sports Centre for 13 plus years, so every time I compete nationally or within Great Britain it is for Crystal Palace – they’re my registered club.

  • Jo Calvino On…Her Experiences at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games
Jo Calvino on…her experiences at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games November 19, 2014 Our new trustee, British weightlifting legend Jo Calvino, talks to us about her life, career, the state of weightlifting in England and what’s next for her. In this third of a series of five articles, Jo talks to us about her experiences at four Commonwealth Games and missing out the London 2012 Olympic Games. Commonwealth Games – Manchester 2002 Before my first Commonwealth Games, Manchester 2002, all the athletes had received media training but it didn’t prepare us for the emotion of the Opening Ceremony. In hindsight I shouldn’t have gone; it drained me. I was saying to everyone that I was going for a medal rather than just getting the kit. My warm-up was brilliant but I got out on the platform and missed my opening lift – I’ve always been a consistent lifter and had never missed my first one. I said to myself it was just nerves as the place had erupted when I went out. The coach, Dave Sawyer, didn’t know what to say to me because he didn’t know me well enough as a lifter. I thought going to a Senior World Championships would prepare me for the Commonwealth Games and I would be fine, but looking back I wasn’t prepared at all. Keith wasn’t part of the England squad despite coaching 7 out of the 15 lifters. There was a lot of politics around it, some of the hierarchy back then wasn’t fantastic and I was strong enough to speak up which could have affected my position in the sport for selections.

WARFIELD, D.D., LL.D., PROFESSOR OF DIDACTIC AND POLEMIC THEOLOGY IN THE THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY AT PRINCETON, N. J. PHILADELPHIA PRESBYTERIAN BOARD OF PUBLICATION 1909 4 THE LITERARY HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTES OF THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION BY JOHN CALVIN BY BENJAMIN B. WARFIELD, D.D., LL.D., PROFESSOR OF DIDACTIC AND POLEMIC THEOLOGY IN THE THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY AT PRINCETON, N. J. PHILADELPHIA PRESBYTERIAN BOARD OF PUBLICATION 1909 {' > First Edition of the Institutes—Title Page ON THE LITERARY HISTORY OF CALVIN’S INSTITUTES By Professor Benjamin B. Warfield, D.D., LL.D. John Calvin was born on the tenth of July, 1509. The Insti¬ tutes of the Christian Religion was thrown off in the first draft in 1534 or 1535, but did not finally leave its author’s hands in its definitive edition until a quarter of a century afterwards, in the late summer of 1559. The four hundredth anniversary of Calvin’s birth is, therefore, also the three hundred and fiftieth of the completion of the Institutes, and may be fitly marked by the issue of a new edition of the Institutes in English. Certainly the publication of this great work in its completed shape is well worth commemorating on its own account. It was the first serious attempt to cast into systematic form that body of truth to which the Reformed churches adhered as taught in the Holy Scriptures; and as such it met a crisis and created an epoch in the history of those churches.

  • Jo Calvino On…Early Days in Weightlifting and Her Journey
Jo Calvino on…early days in weightlifting and her journey November 18, 2014 Our new trustee, British weightlifting legend Jo Calvino, talks to us about her life, career, the state of weightlifting in England and what’s next for her. In the second of a series of five articles, Jo talks to us about her early days of weightlifting and the journey she has had in the sport. Early days of weightlifting When you train as a diver you are in the gym a lot and that is where the Crystal Palace Weightlifting Club, British and England Weightlifting coach Keith Morgan first saw me and some potential, he spoke with Lindsay Fraser, my last diving coach, and asked if he could get me to try it. I thought I would try it and if I didn’t like it, fair enough, but Keith said if I don’t try it, then there could be an opportunity missed. So I dragged Anthony along and tried it. I then stopped everything. I had found weightlifting. I had found where I fitted in and belonged. I was a weightlifter. Three weeks after I tried lifting for the first time I went to the Metropolitan Police Championships and lifted as a guest. I enjoyed it. I weighed in at 42.95kg for the 46kg competition. A lot of the weightlifting girls had been lifting for a long time and I was the first junior to come along for a while so a lot of people were saying ‘you’re so cute’ and it was really nice because diving can be quite bitchy as a girl.
