UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Lazy, the Idle, the Industrious: Discourse and Practice of Work and Productivity in Late Ottoman Society A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Melis Hafez 2012 © Copyright by Melis Hafez 2012 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Lazy, the Idle, the Industrious: Discourse and Practice of Work and Productivity in Late Ottoman Society by Melis Hafez Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2012 Professor James L. Gelvin, Chair This dissertation traces the establishment of a binary between work and laziness from 1839 to 1920, the last century of the Ottoman Empire. Over this period, Ottoman society experienced an epochal shift in the discourses and practices of work. This study examines this shift, first, by exploring how concepts of work and productivity were moralized, socially practiced, militarized and politicized in a non-European modernity project, and second, by demonstrating how this emergent discourse, formulated as an issue of ‘national’ importance, became a constitutive element of the general nation-formation process within the last Ottoman century. I examine the configuration and development of the moralistic discourse of an ‘Islamic work ethic’ as an integral part of creating productive citizens. To do this, I consult an underutilized source, morality books, which display the connection between the mobilization for productivity, modern ii conceptualizations of body and time, and nation formation. Emphasizing the role of social practice in emergent discourses, I investigate how the bureaucratic reforms of the state in the last Ottoman century played a pivotal role in the transformation of concepts and practices of work. -

GYPSIES in OTTOMAN IMPERIAL STATE POLICY, PUBLIC MORALITY and at the SHARIA COURT of ÜSKÜDAR (1530S -1585S)
“COMMUNITY IN MOTION”: GYPSIES IN OTTOMAN IMPERIAL STATE POLICY, PUBLIC MORALITY AND AT THE SHARIA COURT OF ÜSKÜDAR (1530s -1585s) by FAİKA ÇELİK A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Institute of Islamic Studies McGill University Montreal August, 2013 © Faika Çelik 2013 ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the position of Gypsies in the sixteenth century Ottoman Empire in an engagement with the formidable material, historiographical and conceptual challenges that this venture entails. These challenges stem from the limitations of the sources on Gypsies, the variety of narratives produced in contemporary scholarship on the history of Gypsies and deployment of contested concepts such as “marginality,” “ethnicity” and “race” with almost no problematization, contextualization and historicization. Chapter one discusses theoretical and conceptual challenges through looking at various studies on those positioned on the margins, chapter two deals with the material challenges and introduces the historical sources and their limitations. Here I pay particular attention on the court records and how they have been used in Ottoman historiography up until now, as the court records of Üsküdar extending from 1530 – 1585 constitute the backbone of this dissertation. Following this methodological overview of the sources, Chapter three and four are a macro analysis of Ottoman social and moral landscapes. Here an attempt is made to position Gypsies within this contested landscape. Then the thesis takes a rather micro turn, though it should not be considered as a micro-history. In chapter five, Üsküdar’s local court and its records are introduced as well as some of the problems encountered in studying Gypsies through the prism of these court records. -

A Monetary History of the Ottoman Empire
A Monetary History of the Ottoman Empire The Ottoman Empire stood at the crossroads of intercontinental trade at the dawn of the era of capitalism. For the Ottomans coinage was a major symbol of sovereignty and the leading means of exchange. This volume examines the monetary history of that empire from its beginnings in the fourteenth century until the end of the First World War. Through a detailed examination of the currencies and related institutions of an empire which stretched from the Balkans through Anatolia, Syria, Egypt, and the Gulf to the Maghrib, the book demonstrates the complexity of the monetary arrangements and their evolution in response to both local developments and global economic forces. Currency debasements, in¯ation and the ensuing popular opposition are studied in a political economy framework. The volume also affords valuable insights into social and political history and the evolution of Ottoman institutions. This is an important book by one of the most distinguished economic historians in the ®eld. SËEVKET PAMUK is Professor of Economics and Economic History at BogÏazicËi University. His publications include A History of the Middle East Economies in the Twentieth Century (with Roger Owen, 1998), and The Ottoman Empire and European Capitalism, 1820±1913 (1987).
