Vice Lutz Feldt (RET)

Vice Admiral Lutz Feldt is a native of the hanseatic city of Greifswald. Born in 1945, he grew up then in Ahrensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, near Hamburg.

In 1965, after the final High School Examination, he joined the German Navy as an officer candidate. He was commissioned in 1968. His initial sea duty assignment was in the Mine Countermeasure Force as an Officer of the Watch and as a Commanding Officer of FGS Weilheim, a MSC. Subsequent squadron and sea duty assignments included FGS Braunschweig, a frigate; Executive Officer of FGS Braunchweig and Commanding Officer, FGS Hessen, a destroyer; Communication, Command and Control Staff Officer in the 2nd Escort Squadron; Commander 2nd Frigate Squadron. Shore duty assignments included: 23nd Command and Staff Officer Course at the Command and Staff College at Hamburg; Assistant Chief of Branch, Personnel, FMOD; Chief of Branch, Personnel, FMOD subsidary Office, Strausberg, during the unification process of the two German Armed Forces; Chief of Branch Personnel Policy Matters Naval Staff; Chief of Division, Personnel,Naval Officers, FMOD. Vice Admiral Feldt was selected for flag rank in April 1993. His initial flag assignment was Commander Destroyer Flottilla 1995. In October 1996 he reported as Assistant Chief of Staff Operations and Logistic, NATO Headquarters Allied Forcer North West Europe, where he served until Setember 1998. In October 1998 he reported as Commander Military District I, Coast, until March 2000. Vice Admiral Feldt assumed command of the German Fleet in April 2000, and became the Chief of German Naval Staff , FMOD, Bonn and Berlin. He retired from active duty 30. April 2006.

Since retiring in April 2006, Vice Admiral Feldt has taken over several different posts of honor: he was the President of the German Maritime Institute, Bonn, from 2007 to 2012 and is now a member of the Board of the German Maritime Institute, a member of the “Bonner Forum”of the German Atlantic Association; from 2005 until March 2010 he was a member of the advisary board of the “Evangelische Militärseelsorge”(evangelical miltary religious welfare) and he is still a member of the advisary board of the publication “Schiff und Hafen”, an International Publication for Shipping and Marine Technology. From May 2008 to March 2009 he had been contracted by the European Commission as an Adviser for the“Intsrument for Stability”, specificly “Critical Maritime Routes”. From July 2009 to March 2010 he again took over a task as a maritime expert, dealing with Maritime Surveillance as Coordinator of an european “Wise Pen Team” contracted by the European Defence Agency.The mandat has been extended with the focus of the implementation of recommandations until December 2010. The Team has presented the findings of the Progress Report to the members of the Capability Steering Board in March 2011. Since August 2011, as a Director of “Wise Pens International”, he is engaged in writing a study titled: “ Future EU Maritime Operations Requirements and planned Capabilities”. As a senior mentor he participated in several “ Combined Forces Maritime Component Commanders Courses” for the US Naval Ware College, Newport, Rhode Island. He resides in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Rheinland Pfalz, south of the former capital Bonn.
