AS METAMORFOSES DO VAMPIRO: DO VAMPIRO NO FOLCLORE A LORD RUTHVEN Rafael Peres Marques RESUMO PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Literatura Inglesa, Romantismo, Literatura Gótica, Vampiros, John William Polidori (1795-1821) A presente dissertação tem por objectivo um estudo do desenvolvimento do vam- piro enquanto arquétipo literário romântico (sobretudo na literatura inglesa). Realizou-se inicialmente uma abordagem pouco exaustiva às representações desta criatura no âmbito folclórico, que mais adiante se revelou fundamental na análise do corpus textual escolhi- do. São seguidamente abordados e comentados textos setecentistas acerca dos vampiros, bem como das suas supostas aparições em diversas regiões europeias, textos que se reve- lariam decisivos para o desenvolvimento desta figura na literatura e imaginário europeus nos séculos XVIII e XIX. Concluídas estas secções iniciais, procedeu-se ao estudo de um vasto corpus literário, constituído sobretudo por poemas alusivos a vampiros ou criaturas similares. Somente uma destas obras foi analisada aprofundadamente: a narrativa fantás- tica intitulada The Vampyre (1819) de John William Polidori. Será através da análise dos textos escolhidos que se poderá cumprir a mais importante finalidade do trabalho: desco- brir como os escritores românticos recriaram aquela que viria a figurar entre as mais cele- bradas figuras da ficção e imaginário fantásticos. ABSTRACT KEYWORDS: English Literature, Romanticism, Gothic Literature, Vampires, John William Polidori (1795-1821) The present dissertation aims at an analysis of the development of the vampire as a literary and Romantic archetype (primarily in English literature). A fairly succinct app- roach was made to the various representations of this being in folklore, something which proved fundamental while analysing the literary corpus. Several eighteenth-century texts on vampires and their rumoured sightings in various European regions are here summari- sed and discussed, texts which would eventually prove essential for this creature’s evolu- tion within both eighteenth and nineteenth-century literatures and thought. Following the initial chapters is the analysis of a large corpus, which consists mostly of poems in regard to either a vampire or a similar being. One of these texts is analysed in depth, namely the supernatural tale entitled The Vampyre (1819) by the writer John William Polidori. Thus, through an analysis of the texts, the chief objective of this dissertation shall be accompli- shed: that is, to discover how Romantic writers rewrote that which would become one of the most well-known creatures in fantastic fiction and culture. Mas apesar de todos os elementos arquetípicos normalmente associados aos vampiros, podere- mos observar através deste estudo que vários textos (poéticos, narrativos e até alguns não- literários) remodelaram esta criatura substancialmente, ao dar-lhe características e signifi- cados inovadores. É com vista a determinar essas inovações literárias que nos propusemos proceder ao estudo de vários textos centrados nesta personagem. Procuraremos confrontar o vampiro estritamente folclórico com as suas manifestações literárias. Principiaremos justamente por uma abordagem panorâmica às muitas encarnações desta criatura nas narrativas folclóricas, sobretudo na tradição europeia (embora também consideremos algumas criaturas oriundas de regiões diferentes). Procuraremos primeira- mente chegar a uma definição possível da palavra “vampiro” (recusando uma mera con- cepção simplista desta figura versátil). Na verdade, o vampiro trata-se claramente de uma entidade multifacetada, mesmo considerando somente as suas variantes tipicamente fol- clóricas, algumas das quais nomearemos ainda nesse capítulo. Outras temáticas associa- das ao vampiro serão exploradas (entre elas a simbologia bíblica do sangue). O segundo capítulo encontra-se associado ao primeiro, mas deixa a intemporali- dade do anterior de modo a centrar-se no período e escritores setecentistas: vários autores deste período escreveram artigos, dissertações, panfletos e outras monografias acerca do vampiro e dos boatos relativos aos ataques vampíricos. Desta forma, enquanto o primeiro capítulo se refere a estas criaturas como se fossem verídicas (uma ideia que não tentare- mos nem defender nem contestar nesta tese), o segundo coloca o foco no intenso debate epistemológico travado entre vários escritores de renome em torno destas. Muitos destes autores consideravam a crença nos vampiros uma superstição, e acabariam por desvalo- rizá-los como tal. Mas simultaneamente, o fascínio que os vampiros despertaram na im- prensa ocidental propiciou o posterior desenvolvimento destes como motivo e persona- gem literários durante os séculos seguintes. Será precisamente deste desenvolvimento do vampiro enquanto arquétipo literário que falaremos nos capítulos seguintes. Primeiramente, faremos uma breve abordagem aos 1 aspectos e primórdios da literatura gótica, dando particular ênfase aos primeiros romances góticos ingleses. O subcapítulo não incidirá sobre os vampiros literários, tratando-se ba- sicamente de um prelúdio aos conteúdos tratados noutros subcapítulos (mais particular- mente a narrativa que analisaremos no quarto capítulo). Entraremos seguidamente no do- mínio da poesia lírica: ao longo dos dois subcapítulos seguintes, serão apresentados al- guns poemas centrados em entidades vampíricas, escritos por autores alemães e ingleses. Foram seleccionados poemas com base não apenas na qualidade estética ou na fama dos autores (quase todos poetas canónicos), mas também de acordo com um corpus literário proposto por James Twitchell, Melton e ainda outros críticos. As passagens dos poemas alemães serão dadas no Alemão (incluiremos em apêndice traduções inglesas). E finalmente, avançaremos para o quarto e último capítulo, que incidirá particu- larmente sobre a narrativa The Vampyre (1819), habitualmente considerada o primeiro conto na ficção inglesa centrado num vampiro. Antes de principiarmos o comentário à narrativa, há que dar a conhecer o seu autor e as circunstâncias em que a história foi redigida. Assim, começaremos por apresentar o escritor e médico John Polidori (1795- 1821), normalmente recordado como autor da narrativa supracitada e como médico

    VAMPIRES IN KILTS FREDERICK BURWICK As sexual predator the Vampire was closely related to other villains of the Gothic Drama of the period. Cast in a new role as one who first debauches then sucks the blood of his victims, the vampire underwent a major transformation from his earlier folkloric identity in the eighteenth century to his peculiarly urbane post-revolutionary character. Once no more than a resurrected corpse that preyed upon the living, the new vampire was a nobleman of the ancien régime. In the figure of the sophisticated vampire, sexual transgressions were blended with the Sadistic themes of the sexual libertinism of a decadent aristocracy. Also, the stage vampire was an evil antagonist and defiler of religious orthodoxy, whose worship of Satan included the blasphemous parody of drinking the blood, not of Christ, but of a victim or new convert to the dark ways of the living dead. The vampire melodrama performed during the 1820s introduced a disturbingly different transgressive behaviour.1 In imposing his spell on his victims, male as well as female, the stage vampire controlled all witnesses to his act. Members of the audience, no less than characters on the stage, succumbed to the Wirkungsästhetik of the vampire’s gaze.2 The viewer of the play, as another convert, is presumed to fall under the vampire’s thrall. SPATOLA Thesis Director: Dr. Ellen Malenas Ledoux John William Polidori published "The Vampyre" in 1819, and, as the first person to author a work of English vampire fiction, he ultimately established the modern image of the aristocratic vampire, which writers such as Bram Stoker later borrowed. The literary vampire, exemplified by Lord Ruthven, reveals the influence of Burkean aesthetics; however, the vampire's portrayal as a degenerate nobleman and his immense popularity with readers also ensured that he would have a tremendous impact on nineteenth century culture. "The Vampyre" foreshadows the more socially-aware Gothic literature of the Victorian period, but the story's glorification of the perverse vampire also presents a challenge to traditional morality. This essay explores the influence of the literary vampire not just on broader aspects of nineteenth century culture but also its influence on the Decadent Movement (focusing on the works of writers such as Charles Baudelaire, Théophile Gautier, and Oscar Wilde) in order to show how it reflects the decadent abnormal. In doing so, however, this essay also questions whether decadence ought to be understood as a nineteenth century European phenomenon, as opposed to a ii movement that was confined to the late Victorian period; the beliefs shared by decadent writers often originated in Romanticism, and the Romantics' fascination with the supernatural suggests that they were perhaps as interested in perverse themes as the Decadents.

    1 Michela Vanon Alliata: “The Physician and his Lordship John William Polidori’s The Vampyre” © by Michela Vanon Alliata John Polidori’s The Vampyre, the work of a young Anglo-Italian physician, is unanimously recognized as the progenitor of the literary vampire genre. It established the cult of vampirism in England and on the continent, a craze which culminated in the publication of Dracula and that still shows no signs of subsiding. Polidori was the first to recast the Eastern European vampire mythology by transforming a hideous, mindless village vampiric ghoul not only into a person, but into a mysterious, sardonic aristocratic seducer who preys among high society. Written in the late summer of 1816 at Geneva, just after Lord Byron had sacked him as his personal physician and travelling companion during his Grand Tour, The Vampyre was a publishing phenomenon1 and a succès de scandale because of the false Byron attribution - much to Byron’s fury and without Polidori’s knowledge, it was first published on Fools' Day 1819 by Henry Colburn in the New Monthly Magazine under his name, (the misattribution was obviously intentional: the publisher wished to increase sales by taking advantage of Byron’s popularity)2 - but especially because readers were titillated by a story in which the vampire was believed to be an accurate portrait of the flamboyant Lord Byron himself, already as famous for his personality cult as for his poetry. Hoffmann’s Opera Manifesto: Romantic Philosophy and Musical Semantics in Early German Romantic Opera Daniel Thomas Boucher A thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Research in Music September 2020 Word count: 24,220 Abstract In the wide array of scholarship on music and Romanticism, in-depth studies on early German Romantic opera remain limited. Those that do exist are often characterised by the troubles surrounding its development in comparison to the international success of Italian and French opera (Meyer, 2003; Markx, 2016). Despite a flourishing of German opera in the early nineteenth century, questions remain surrounding what stimulated this sudden profusion and how the works of this period laid the foundations for later figures such as Wagner. In order to achieve a better understanding of early German Romantic opera, I have chosen to explore E. T. A. Hoffmann’s literary output in the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung. Through four publications – Ritter Gluck (1809), Don Juan (1813), Der Dichter und der Komponist (1813), and Kreisleriana (1814) – Hoffmann explored what he believed to be a true Romantic opera, creating what I will call an opera manifesto. This thesis explores how the ideas Hoffmann presented in his manifesto underpin and unite milestones in early German Romantic opera. Grounded in contemporary Romantic philosophy, his ideas contributed to the formation of a national style. Specifically, I will show how his radical aesthetics encouraged composers to use the orchestra as an agent to express the drama, as well as to convey the Romantic quest for the Absolute.

The fame of this novel, one of the greatest works of horror fiction, has tended to eclipse both its author and his other writing. There is no ques­ tion, however, that Dracula is Stoker's masterpiece. It is also the last great Gothic novel. Written over seventy years after the peak of the Gothic movement, Dracula is a revival of the style and form perfected by Ann Radcliffe, Matthew "Monk" Lewis and Charles Robert Maturin. Although the era of the Gothic novel had ended long before Stoker began his writing career, its influence can be seen clearly in his work and that of many of his contemporaries, includ­ ing Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Robert Louis Stevenson.
