Summer 2017 Czech Film Center The Czech Film Center (CFC) was established in 2002 to represent, market and promote Czech cinema and film industry and to increase the awareness of Czech film worldwide. As a national partner of international film festivals and co-production platforms, CFC takes active part in selection and presentation of Czech films and projects abroad. Linking Czech cinema with international film industry, Czech Film Center works with a worldwide network of international partners to profile the innovation, diversity and creativity of Czech films, and looks for opportunities for creative exchange between Czech filmmakers and their international counterparts. 1997 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance Film Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (Errol Morris, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, Kevin Smith), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. It was a fi tting tribute to both Fassbinder and the Festival and the ways that American independent cinema was indeed becoming international. Report on the Foreign Policy of the Czech Republic 2002
Introduction In the international arena, the Czech Republic strives to act as a democratic and politically, economically and socially stable Central European country, pursuing not only its own particular interests but also assuming its share of responsibility for the development of Europe and the entire international community. The international environment in which the Czech Republic pursues its foreign policy is a product of the interaction of a number of factors – sovereign countries, associations of countries at different levels of integration in international organisations and institutions, and non-governmental entities, ranging from non- governmental organisations to various non-transparent lobbying groups not respecting the rules of international relations, including organised crime groups and terrorist organisations. The role, import and influence of these factors fluctuate, often within a very short time span. Following the end of the cold war and the disintegration of the bi-polar world, and as a result of changes in the security environment, the intensification of globalisation processes, the liberalisation of the global economy, the increasing mutual dependence of countries, and the accelerating development of science and technology, there has been significant growth in the importance of multilateral co-operation within the framework of international organisations and integration groupings. At the same time, in the face of new threats posed by certain non- transparent entities, and terrorist organisations in particular, all international mechanisms designed to protect against such dangerous phenomena are rapidly gaining in importance. The Czech Republic, as a country which, by size and population, ranks among medium- sized countries in the European area, and as a country with an open economy, a high proportion of exports and services in the generation of its gross domestic product, and with limited natural resources, is markedly dependent on international co-operation. -

Jung uses those theories for the first time as part of his treatment of Sabina Spielrein, a young Russian woman bro- ught to his care. She is obviously troubled despite her assertions that she is not crazy. Jung is able to uncover the reasons for Sa- bina’s psychological problems, she who is an aspiring physician herself. In this latter role, Jung employs her to work in his own research, which often includes him and his wife Emma as test subjects. Jung is eventually able to meet Freud himself, they, ba- sed on their enthusiasm, who develop a friendship driven by the- ir lengthy philosophical discussions on psychoanalysis. Actions by Jung based on his discussions with another patient, a fellow psychoanalyst named Otto Gross, lead to fundamental chan- ges in Jung’s relationships with Freud, Sabina and Emma. -

The film returns to a pivotal time in modern Czech history, ignored in Czech cinema until now. It begins with a reconstruction of the shocking act of a Czech university student, who in protest of the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia, set himself on fire in Prague’s Wenceslas Square on January 16, 1969, and died four days later. Through the story of the brave defense attorney Dagmar Burešová, who defended Palach’s legacy in a doomed lawsuit, the film examines the transformations taking place in Czechoslovak society after the invasion of the armies of the Warsaw Pact in August of 1968 and the installation of a hardline Communist government. It depicts the beginnings of Czech and Slovak resistance against the occupation, which reached its apex with the mass protests during Palach’s funeral. It also shows the nation’s gradual resignation under the pressure of fear and harsher persecution. LONG SYNOPSIS Part I On the 16th of January1969 on Wenceslas Square in Prague, a young student sets himself on fire in front of dozens of passers-by. Spring 2020 The Czech Film Fund is the main public financing body for cinema in the Czech Republic. The Fund supports all stages of film production, as well as promotion, distribution and other film-related areas. It also administers production incentives for audio-visual projects made in the Czech Republic. Apart from financing, the fund also includes two divisions for international activities: the Czech Film Center and the Czech Film Commission. The Czech Film Center promotes and markets Czech films and the local film industry worldwide. It collaborates with major international film festivals and co-production platforms and utilizes a global network of partners, seeking opportunities for creative exchange between Czech filmmakers and their international counterparts. The Czech Film Commission promotes the country with its film infrastructure as one of the world’s top destinations for audio-visual production. As a comprehensive resource for filming in the Czech Republic, the commission provides incoming filmmakers with consultation, guidance, and contacts. Internationales Filmfestival Karlovy Vary Das Internationale Filmfestival Karlovy Vary (tschechisch Mezinárodní filmový festival Karlovy Vary, englische Kurzform KVIFF) findet jedes Jahr Anfang Juli im böhmischen Kurort Karlsbad statt. Das KVIFF zählt zu den 13 A-Festivals, gehört in dieser Gruppe der weltweit führenden Festivals allerdings zu den kleineren Veranstaltungen. Gemessen an der Zahl der verkauften Tickets (etwa 130.000) liegt es zwischen dem etwas größeren Festival von Locarno (147.000) und dem kleineren Warschauer Festival (108.000). Internationales Filmfestival in Das Filmfestival in Karlsbad ist eine der ältesten Filmschauen der Welt. Karlsbad, 2006 Premiere feierte es 1946, wobei es im ersten Jahr mit Marienbad einen zweiten Austragungsort gab. In den drei folgenden Jahren fand das Festival sogar ausschließlich in Marienbad statt, ab 1950 dann nur noch in Karlsbad. Die ersten Preise wurden 1948 verliehen. Damit blicken nur die Filmfestspiele von Venedig und das Moskauer Filmfestival, die bereits in den 1930er Jahren begründet wurden, auf eine längere Tradition zurück. Die Filmfestspiele von Cannes und das Festival von Locarno wurden ebenfalls erstmals 1946 veranstaltet, beide allerdings einige Wochen nach dem ersten Karlsbader Festival. Von 1958 bis 1992 fand das Filmfestival Karlovy Vary lediglich alle zwei Jahre – im Wechsel mit dem Moskauer Filmfestival – statt. Aus diesem Grund konnte das Festival im Jahr 2015 erst seine 50. Austragung feiern, obwohl es zu dem Zeitpunkt bereits 69 Jahre existierte.[1] Zu größeren Veränderungen kam es schließlich bei der 29. Auflage des Festivals im Jahr 1994, als auf einen jährlichen Austragungsrhythmus umgestellt wurde. Zuvor hatten das tschechische Kultusministerium, die Stadt Karlsbad und das ortsansässige Grand-Hotel Pupp eine Stiftung für das Festival gegründet, die den bekannten tschechischen Schauspieler Jiří Bartoška als Präsidenten des Festivals engagierte. -

It was the most spectacular event of the “Autumn of Nations”. It was also a very fitting symbol – a metaphor – for the fall of communism’s totalitarian system and for the reunification of Europe. Yet, the bringing down of the Berlin Wall was merely the final stage of a process that had been initiated nearly ten years earlier at the Gdansk Shipyards. In August 1980, as the result of a weeks-long workers’ strike, the ruling Polish United Workers Party agreed to the legalization of Solidarity, the first independent labour union in that part of Europe controlled by the Soviet Union. Solidarity was the first step towards freedom in the 40 years since the Red Army installed communist regimes throughout the Central European countries it had “liberated” during the war. -
