1 7 Carpenter Antonio one fine day Then when Pinocchio made his way obtained a funny piece of wood back home, a voice came from the wall that cried and laughed and talked away a friendly cricket said “You play just like the little children could. too many tricks for one so small”.

2 8 And when Geppetto came along The naughty toy grew angry fast the piece of wood soon made a joke and threw a hammer: how it flew! a little boy’s voice said, sing-song, Nobody scolded him at last “Old yellow wig!”. It really spoke! but he felt cold and hungry too.

3 9 The old companions fought and cussed He looked for food upon the ground and grasped their wigs with trembling arms an egg among the shavings lay, but soon fell down into the dust but when Pinocchio looked around so old and weak they did no harm. his lovely meal had flown away!

4 10 Antonio made peace with his friend He ran towards the village lights, and gave him the strange piece of wood to see if there he'd get some bread “Here, make a puppet that can bend and pressed a doorbell late at night and jump and sing, like we once could”. but they threw water on his head!

5 11 Geppetto’s hands were old and slow Pinocchio, hungry and cold but carved the puppet all the same fell fast asleep upon a chair he called his ‘son’ Pinocchio his feet into the embers rolled but Mischief was his middle name. and burnt away to cinders there.

6 12 The naked puppet ran away Then good Geppetto came back home, and though Geppetto tried his best all tricks forgotten, with some pears to make his little ‘son’ behave and gave them to his naughty ‘son’ he found himself under arrest. without a thought for his own cares. 13 21 He made his puppet some new feet, Blue Fairy sent a coachman there and dressed him in good clothes of wool to lend Pinocchio a hand but his own jacket went to meet the coachman cut him down with care the cost of reading books for school. but poor Pinocchio couldn’t stand.

14 22 The puppet sold his book again Pinocchio was put to bed to buy a ticket for a play three doctors came and looked at him and there he met his puppet friends they said that he was almost dead and they were glad he’d come that way. and that he must take medicine.

15 23 The little puppets sang and danced The little fairy nursed him well but the black-bearded Master came and gave him medicine each day red-eyed with rage he roared and pranced Pinocchio didn’t like the smell and raised his arm to punish them. said “No”! And pushed it all away.

16 24 Fire-eater sneezed to hide his tears But when the undertakers brought at the brave-hearted puppet’s stand a coffin, he knew he must try Pinocchio mastered all his fears he had to drink that awful draught to save poor Harlequin, his friend. because he didn’t want to die.

17 25 He gave Pinocchio coins of gold He couldn’t tell the fairy why and wished him well and let him go they’d hung him up upon a tree but Fox and Cat a story told and every time he told a lie and tricked him with a tale of woe. his nose grew longer rapidly.

18 26 Straight on! Fox and Cat following, The woodpeckers all flew about when dusk came they were hungry, so and chiselled down the nose of wood they went into the Red Prawn Inn Pinocchio wanted to go out who paid the bill? Pinocchio! to find Geppetto if he could.

19 27 Pinocchio has paid no mind But Fox and Cat were just ahead to friendly Cricket’s good advice they cornered him and told a tale you can be sure the rascals find they made him sow his coins and said his coins and steal them in a trice! “The field of miracles cannot fail”.

20 28 The golden coins Pinocchio hid Pinocchio said he had been robbed inside his mouth, it made him choke but nobody believed his tale the rascals chased and captured him, and though he cried and wailed and sobbed and left him hanging from an oak. they threw the puppet into jail. 29 37 When finally he was released Pinocchio’s schoolmates laughed and jeered he set off for the fairy’s home he turned away along the shore the serpent didn’t get a feast to see a shark that had appeared a sharp trap cut him to the bone! upon the beach the night before.

30 38 The man who caught Pinocchio The naughty boys soon lost their head attached him with a heavy chain they fought and knocked a classmate down he had to guard a hen-house, so Pinocchio stayed the others fled he was in trouble once again! the boy lay still upon the ground.

31 39 Some weasels came during the night Pinocchio now, under arrest, he did not help them steal a hen forgot the fairy’s good advice his master said he had done right he’d promised her to do his best and freed the puppet there and then. but didn’t want to pay the price.

32 40 At last Pinocchio was free He saw a mastiff in the sea he jumped and danced he was so glad the poor dog was about to drown he wanted to go back and see although he wanted to be free his little fairy who was sad. he helped the dog to reach the ground.

33 41 He did not find the fairy’s home Pinocchio thought he’d got away the one he loved had died of grief but was soon caught by the Green Man Pinocchio cried upon the tomb “I’m not a fish!’ he tried to say his poor blue fairy lay beneath! ‘Don’t put me in the frying pan!”.

34 42 A silent dove flew downwards then When the Green Man began to fry and took him to the windy shore Pinocchio called out in despair to meet his father once again the mastiff heard the puppet’s cry and live together as before. and snatched him from the ogre’s lair.

35 43 But Geppetto had rowed away! He got back home so late at night Pinocchio braved the stormy sea a snail at the window said among the waves an island lay ‘Wait until morning when it’s light’ where everyone worked busily. he kicked the door ‘I want my bed!’.

36 44 And there his fairy lived again He saw a good meal coming close he promised her to study hard his foot was stuck fast in the door she gave him schoolbooks and a pen there was no food, it was all false and off he went to the school yard. 45 53 The fairy had forgiven him Then they decided they would dive and had a day fixed for the toy between the jaws into the sea to change his little wooden limbs the tuna fish escaped alive and turn into a real boy. and carried them they had got free!

46 54 But Candlewick said, “I’m so smart Their home was waiting for them still how wonderful it’s going to be! Cricket and Goat had kept it sound I’m going on a golden cart to help Geppetto who was ill with ribbons, to the toy country!”. Pinocchio pushed the wheel around.

47 55 There followed months of fun unknown And when the puppet heard the news but in the end the flaw appeared that his fairy had fallen sick the heads of all the boys had grown he worked all night to pay the dues a pair of great big donkey’s ears! and didn’t play a single trick!

48 56 So poor Pinocchio had become Pinocchio has discovered how a little donkey, how he brayed! by helping others you find joy The circus people made him run he’s not a wooden puppet now and jump through hoops while music played. he’s changed into a real boy!

49 But one sad day Pinocchio fell the ringmaster said “He must go! He cannot jump I’ll have to sell to buy another for the show”.

50 They sank him down into the sea to make a drum of donkey skin but then some fishes set him free he was a puppet once again!

51 Pinocchio thought he’d won the day he almost reached the little goat but though he tried to swim away he slipped back down the great shark’s throat!

52 And there he found his father, right inside the belly of the fish eating in pale candlelight a sardine in a little dish.
