Furs to Furriers in Dunedin, New Zealand, to 1940 Evan James Tosh A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Consumer and Applied Science at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. August 2005 Declaration To be added later ii Abstract This thesis chronicles the development of the fur trade in Dunedin from the 1870s to 1940. The fur trade in Dunedin started in response to the large numbers of rabbit skins and meat that were able to be marketed following the explosion in introduced rabbit numbers in the 1870s. Most rabbit traders diversified into buying and selling other products of the land, but a few became more involved in the fur trade, by concentrating on the rabbit trade or by diversifying into fur dressing and/or manufacturing and retailing fur garments. Dunedin became the major source of skins for export, and also was home to the main fur processing factory, and largest fur garment manufacturing operation in the country. Government measures to foster local industries and employment through the use of protective tariffs are examined. The demand for fur garments and the protection of these tariffs aided the development of fur garment manufacturers from 1920 onwards. The controversy over whether the commercial use of rabbits hindered the policy of rabbit destruction is examined. Whilst the Government tried to encourage rabbit destruction it did not hinder the trade in rabbit meat or skins. This contrasts with the official attitude to opossums, as population increases were encouraged in order to build up a fur trades. But by the late 1920s it was realised that the opossum was actually damaging forests and had become a pest. -

The Tourism Export Council of New Zealand is a trade association that has represented the interests of inbound tourism since 1971. Their inbound members package holidays for international visitors whether they be part of a group tour, independent traveller, conference/incentives, education or cruise visitors. What do we do & who do we represent? The Tourism Export Council’s focus is to build long term business relationships with distribution networks in New Zealand and offshore. Both are export industries because they bring in foreign dollars to New Zealand. With agriculture, you grow an apple, send it offshore and a foreigner eats it. A clear pathway of a New Zealand product consumed or purchased by someone overseas. Tourism works slightly differently: The product is still developed in NZ (just like the apple) It is sold offshore (like the apple) It is purchased by a foreigner (again like the apple) BUT it is experienced in NZ and therein lies the difference. -

Wellington Network Upgrade
WELLINGTON NETWORK UPGRADE Better rail services for the region. Around 500,000 Wellingtonians and visitors take over 14 million passenger journeys each year on our Metro Rail Network. KiwiRail, Greater Wellington Regional Council and Metlink are working together to modernise the rail, thanks to investment of almost $300 million from the Government to enable: Train services to be more reliable. More people and freight travelling on rail in the future. The Wellington Metro Upgrade Programme is being delivered on a busy, well-maintained but ageing network where trains run 18 hours a day. The focus of our work is: Renewing existing network infrastructure to improve rail services. Renewing traction power overhead line system and signals power supply, and improving the track across the network including inside the four major tunnels. Adding capacity to the network so more people can travel on trains in the future while still allowing for freight services. This includes: Double tracking between Trentham and Upper Hutt. Improvements to Wellington station approaches. Changes at Plimmerton. More information www.kiwirail.co.nz (Wellington Metro Upgrade) HUTT LINE DOUBLE TRACKING More frequent, reliable trains. The 2.7 kilometres of rail line between Trentham and Upper Hutt is being double tracked so trains can travel in both directions at the same time. This will allow more frequent and reliable services along this section of the busy line from Wellington to Upper Hutt and Wairarapa. Stations are being upgraded and we are making it safer around our tracks. WELLINGTON REGIONAL RAIL STRATEGIC DIRECTION 2020 Where we’ve come from Rail has been a key component of the Wellington Region’s transport network for more than 150 years. The first rail line was built in the 1870s between Wellington and Wairarapa. What is now known as the North Island Main Trunk followed in the 1880s, providing a more direct route to Manawatū and the north. Two branch lines were later added. The region has grown around the rail network, as villages have turned into towns and cities. Much of it was actively built around rail as transit-oriented development. Rail has become an increasingly important way for people to move about, particularly to Wellington’s CBD, and services and infrastructure have been continuously expanded and improved to serve an ever-growing population. The region is a leader in per capita use of public transport. Schedule of Responsibilities Delegated to Associate Ministers and Parliamentary Under-Secretaries 14 June 2018 276641v1 This paper is presented to the House, in accordance with the suggestion of the Standing Orders Committee in its Report on the Review of Standing Orders [I. 18A, December 1995]. At page 76 of its report, the Standing Orders Committee recorded its support for oral questions to be asked directly of Associate Ministers who have been formally delegated defined responsibilities by Ministers having primary responsibility for particular portfolios. The Standing Orders Committee proposed that the Leader of the House should table in the House a schedule of such delegations at least annually. The attached schedule has been prepared in the Cabinet Office for this purpose. The schedule also includes responsibilities allocated to Parliamentary Under-Secretaries. Under Standing Orders, Parliamentary Under-Secretaries may only be asked oral questions in the House in the same way that any MP who is not a Minister can be questioned. However, they may answer questions on behalf of the principal Minister in the same way that Associate Ministers can answer. The delegations are also included in the Cabinet Office section of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet website (http://www.dpmc.govt.nz/cabinet/ministers/delegated), which will be updated from time to time to reflect any substantive amendments to any of the delegated responsibilities.
