The Plateau Exhibition in Ghent 2001 By Ron Holloway Spring 2002 Issue of KINEMA THE PLATEAU EXHIBITION AT THE SCIENCE MUSEUM IN GHENT 2001 Film historians with a tick for the archaeology of the cinema are well advised to pay a visit to the Museum of Science in Ghent to view the exhibition honouring the 200th birthday of Belgian scientist Joseph Plateau. It was Plateau’s experiments on optical deception and the persistence of vision in the middle of the 19th century that led to the invention of the anorthoscope (distorted view) and the phenakistiscope (deceitful view), the direct precursors of the first moving picture inventions. The entire range of related optical inventions the stroboscope (whirling view), the thaumatrope (magical turning), and zoetrope (life turning), to name just the key scientific discoveries that led to cinematography were placed on mechanically driven display atthe opening of the 28th Flanders International Film Festival in Ghent (8-18 October 2001). Visitors to the Flanders festival were also presented with an invaluable catalogue to accompany the exhibition: ”Joseph Plateau, (1801-1883) Living Between Art and Science” (Gent: Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen, 2001) by Maurice Dorikens, with additional essays by David Robinson, Laurent Mannoni, and Giusy Pisno-Basile. Robinson’s contribution on ”Plateau, Faraday and Their Spinning Discs” focuses on the fruitful competition between Joseph Plateau in Belgium and Michael Faraday in England on experiments relating to optical deception. Plateau won that race by a few months to perfect the anorthoscope in 1936, a concession readily made by Faraday upon reading the Belgian scientist’s published papers.

COURSE DESCRIPTION Before modern cinema, 19th century optical toys such as the “wonder turner” and the “wheel of the Devil” entertained through the illusion of motion. In this class, you’ll animate still photographic images. You’ll learn to make thaumatropes, flipbooks, and zoetropes, devices that rely upon the persistence of vision, and you’ll create other entertaining objects such as an animated exquisite corpse, tunnel books, strip animations, and moving panoramas. You’ll learn to construct these devices and effectively create an illusion with each. The main focus of the course will be on the development your ideas. COURSE PROJECTS There will be three projects in which you will create an artwork based on a particular early animation device. For these projects, you will create images and build the optical device based on your ideas as an artist. All projects will be evaluated on the strength of your ideas, the inventiveness of your use of the device, the craft of the images and object, and the success of the final illusion. Eight men of science stand around an anatomy table. The body of a petty tbief from Leyden is stretcbed out in front of them, lifeless. Except for a cloth draped over its genitals, the male body is exposed-open to tbe gaze; its left arm appears partially dissected, the skin pulled back to reveal a greenish mass of muscle tissue. Aris Kindt pays retribution to the society he has wronged; beyond bis death he becomes the servicing agent for a nascent Enlightenment. The scene is famous. Rembrandt's moribund painting The Anatomy Lesson ofDr. Nicolaas Tulp depicts the ceremonial penetration of death in the name of a science which seeks to multiply the order of it's reasoning. l Endeavoring to know death by making it's body clear and distinct, the reputed surgeon Tulp extends the previous public execution to the spectacle of science. The Anatomy Lesson documents an important shift in the relation between power and life ("power over life") in the West. One which Foucault identifies as a shift from the sover eign right to administer death to a life-administering power: "a power bent on generating forces, making them grow, and ordering them, rather than one dedicated to impeding them, making them submit, or destroying them"2.

The Politics of Gender and the Visual in Virginia Woolf and Angela Carter Caleb Sivyer Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (English Literature) School of English, Communication & Philosophy Cardiff University 2015 Summary This thesis investigates the relationship between gender and the visual in texts by Virginia Woolf and Angela Carter. Drawing on visual studies, gender studies and film theory, I argue that my selected texts present the gendered visual field as dynamic and layered, foregrounding both a masculine economy of vision and the possibility of alternative forms of gendered subjectivity and ways of looking. The Introduction discusses the key methodological frameworks used in this thesis, including Jonathan Crary’s account of the historical construction of vision, the debates around gender, mobility and visuality centred on the figure of the flâneur, and Laura Mulvey’s account of the cinematic male gaze. I argue for the importance of recognising that the field of vision is a site of contestation composed of an interplay of connected gendered looks. Chapter One focuses on the unresolved tensions between different gendered looks in Mrs Dalloway (1925) which take place across a number of spaces and are mediated by a variety of visual frames. Chapter Two turns to Orlando (1928) to explore Woolf’s playful subversion of a masculine visual economy through a protagonist who changes sex and dress. In addition to this vacillation of appearance, I argue that the text’s representations of London in the 1920s, in particular the department store and motor-car, contribute to a proliferation of gendered looks. In turning to The Passion of New Eve (1979), Chapter Three shows how Carter foregrounds the violence involved in the performance of gender, particularly as mediated through the cinema, and further subverts masculine vision by representing gender as a masquerade.

What Is Digital Cinema?
WHAT IS DIGITAL CINEMA? Lev Manovich Cinema, the Art of the Index[1] Thus far, most discussions of cinema in the digital age have focused on the possibilities of interactive narrative. It is not hard to understand why: since the majority of viewers and critics equate cinema with storytelling, digital media is understood as something which will let cinema tell its stories in a new way. Yet as exciting as the ideas of a viewer participating in a story, choosing different paths through the narrative space and interacting with characters may be, they only address one aspect of cinema which is neither unique nor, as many will argue, essential to it: narrative. The challenge which digital media poses to cinema extends far beyond the issue of narrative. Digital media redefines the very identity of cinema. In a symposium which took place in Hollywood in the Spring of 1996, one of the participants provocatively referred to movies as "flatties" and to human actors as "organics" and "soft fuzzies."[2] As these terms accurately suggest, what used to be cinema's defining characteristics have become just the default options, with many others available. When one can "enter" a virtual three-dimensional space, to view flat images projected on the screen is hardly the only option. When, given enough time and money, almost everything can be simulated in a computer, to film physical reality is just one possibility. This "crisis" of cinema's identity also affects the terms and the categories used to theorize cinema's past. French film theorist Christian Metz wrote in the 1970s that "Most films shot today, good or bad, original or not, 'commercial' or not, have as a common characteristic that they tell a story; in this measure they all belong to one and the same genre, which is, rather, a sort of 'super-genre' ['sur-genre']."[3] In identifying fictional 1 films as a "super-genre' of twentieth century cinema, Metz did not bother to mention another characteristic of this genre because at that time it was too obvious: fictional films are live action films, i.e.

The History of early animation What is animation? Animation is the technique of photographing successive drawings or positions of puppets or models to create an illusion of movement when the film is shown as a sequence. Early animation Using moving pictures to tell a story has been around since prehistoric times, such as a bronze-age pottery bowl from 3000AD which shows a sequence of 5 images around it showing phases of a goat leaping up to nip a tree. Animation as we know it today began much later with the invention of devices such as the Magic Lantern and the Zoetrope. The Magic Lantern was invented in the 1650s by Christiann Huygens. It was an image projector which used pictures on sheets of glass. As some of the sheets contained moving parts it was considered the first example of projected animation. The Thaumatrope was invented by John Ayrton Paris in 1825. It was made from a disc of card with a different picture on each side (e.g. a bird on one and a cage on the other). When the disc was spun it fooled your eyes, so the two separate images appeared to merge to become one (the bird looked like it was in the cage). William George Horner invented the Zoetrope, originally called the Doedaleum, in 1833. It made individual pictures appear to be moving by looking through slits in a rotating cylinder. John Barnes Linnett patented the first Flip Book (known as a kineograph which means ‘moving picture’) in 1868. It contained a series of pictures which changed slightly from one page to the next so that when the pages were turned quickly, the pictures appeared to move.
