These contemporary artists explore the border as a physical reality (place), as subject (imagination), and as a site for production and forward-thinking solutions (possibility). While the selection largely focuses on work executed in the last two decades, it includes objects by Chicano artists in California who converged in the 1970s-1980s to address border issues in their work. The inclusion of artists from various disciplines, including design, architecture, sculpture, painting and photography, reflects the ways in which contemporary artists and designers cross disciplinary borders. The main exhibition in Albuquerque, hosted by 516 ARTS, expanded into a second site at the Albuquerque Museum due to the volume of work. Accompanying interdisciplinary programs around the city include partnerships with: Albuquerque Museum, UNM Art Museum, Outpost Performance Space, Guild Cinema, Sanitary Tortilla Factory, Santa Fe Dreamers Project, UNM Dream Team, New Mexico Immigration Law Center and National Hispanic Cultural Center. The original exhibition, and fully illustrated exhibition catalogue, was developed by, and will travel to Albuquerque from the Craft & Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, where it is on view September 9, 2017?January 7, 2018 as part of Pacific Standard Time Los Angeles/Latin America 2017. Sponsoring Organization: 516 ARTS Description: Now in our 11th year as an independent, nonprofit arts and culture venue in Downtown Albuquerque, 516 ARTS presents at least four major multicultural, cross-disciplinary exhibitions each year that showcase a mix of established, emerging, local, national and international artists in all media and representing a variety of cultural backgrounds. Each exhibition is open and free to the public, presented in an educational context, and accompanied by a series of related programs, most of which are also free: public forums with professional artists, curators and scholars in other fields relating to the project theme; gallery talks and panel discussions; literary events; workshops; school programs; screenings; performances; special events; and public art projects. Our programming is developed locally, in partnerships, and with community outreach as an integral component, offering creative interpretations of important issues of our times, invoking thoughtful dialogue across disciplines, and allowing visitors new ways to understand, appreciate and engage in the arts within a variety of contexts. We seek different ways to encourage diverse audiences to engage in the arts, highlighting the fact that there are many ways to experience art and a variety of cultures. Mission: The mission of 516 ARTS is to strengthen the connection between audiences and the arts by: offering exhibitions and programs that address issues in world culture; presenting innovative, interdisciplinary education and outreach programs in a variety of art forms; and building audiences for the arts and culture in New Mexico. Our core values are inquiry, diversity, collaboration and accessibility. Programming is designed to inspire curiosity, dialogue and creative experimentation among artists and in exchange with audiences, providing quality arts and humanities experiences for individuals from diverse cultural communities. The focused dialogue about the issues addressed in the exhibitions offers the featured artists, curators, scholars, poets, musicians and filmmakers an informed platform from which to create, interpret, present and perform their work. 516 ARTS continues to build strong collaborative relationships with arts, civic and educational organizations throughout the region and beyond to further enhance and expand cultural opportunities for the community. Strategic partnerships enable shared marketing and collaborative programming. Key collaborations organized by 516 ARTS over our ten-year history include: ?DECADE: Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of 516 ARTS? (2016); ?Digital Latin America? (2014); ?ISEA2012 International Symposium on Electronic Art,? the largest arts collaboration in New Mexico history; ?Latino/a Imaginary? (2011); STREET ARTS (2010); and LAND/ART (2009). Through changing exhibitions, accessible public programming and major collaborative projects, 516 ARTS stimulates the creative economy, supports local revitalization and enhances quality of life for residents, communities and businesses in the Greater Albuquerque Metropolitan Area, as well as attracting visitors from around the country and the world. We provide access to economic opportunities for artists by presenting their work and involving them in educational programming, which gives them greater recognition and meaningful, productive community interaction. The 516 ARTS Fulcrum Fund, a regional regranting program in partnership with the Andy Warhol Foundation, awards $60,000 a year in grants of $2,000-$5,000 to local artists for collaborative and experimental arts activities that engage the general public. 516 ARTS seeks to foster a multidisciplinary, critical discussion among culturally diverse groups of artists and the general public on issues important to our lives on both a local and a global level. We strive to draw new audiences and insure accessibility through free public programs and activities in the community. We provide unique arts and culture experiences for audiences, and a place for spirited exchange, self-expression and personal transformation, often with a humanities approach, integrating the arts into community life through exciting collaborations, resourceful outreach, varied and thought-provoking exhibitions, cultural events and creative educational opportunities. 516 Central Avenue SW , Albuquerque NM 87102-3114 email: [email protected]; tel: 505-242-1445; fax: 505-244-4101; website: http://www.516arts.org; DUNS #: 024 033 142 Project Director: Dr. Josie Lopez; Curator, 516 ARTS 516 Central Avenue SW , Albuquerque NM 87102 email: [email protected]; tel: 505-400-8739 Fiscal Agent: Suzanne Sbarge; Executive Director, 516 ARTS 516 Central Avenue SW , Albuquerque NM 87102 email: [email protected]; tel: ; fax: 505-244-1445 Contact info NOT APPROVED Project Formats: [ X] Conference [ X] Exhibit [ X] Lecture(s) [ X] Radio Program [ X] Reading/Discussion [ X] Workshop [ X] Film or Video Discussion [ X] Symposium [ X] Panel Discussion [ X] Other (explain) [ X] Does program respond to a NMHC request for proposals (RFP)?
