Neil Jeffares, Dictionary of pastellists before 1800 Online edition RAMSAY, Allan Edinburgh 13.X.1713 – Dover 10.VIII.1784 The leading British portrait painter in the middle of the century, Ramsay was trained in London, travelling in 1736 to Rome and Naples where he studied with Francesco Solimena and Imperiali. He returned to Edinburgh in 1738 but soon moved to London. A further trip to Italy took place in 1754–57. According to Cunningham, Ramsay’s 1764 portrait of George III met with such demand for repetitions that he was forced to take on assistants to meet the demand; among them were Mary Black and Vispré (qq.v.). Ramsay was a great admirer of French pastellists such as La Tour (to whom he makes approbatory reference in a Dialogue on Taste, of J.6092.111 Hugh Hume-Campbell, 3rd Earl of which the second edition appeared in 1762), and MARCHMONT (1708–1794), in an embroidered his oil portraits often strive after similar lighting ~self-portrait at an easel, pnt., c.1756 (PC). There is a polit- ical tension in his writings: until the 1730s at least he hoped for the resto- ration of an independent, Stuart, Scottish kingdom, but he also worked for Anglo-Scottish reconciliation. The latter was neither a premedit- ated project on his part, nor direct support of the Hanoverian dynasty, their governments, or the terms of the Treaty of Union. It was a slow movement, measured notably through epistolary poems exchanged with Englishmen. These personal, literary contacts helped him to imagine a common future shared by two peoples, or more precisely their elites. -

All tragedies of the sixteenth century are noticed, because of their his- torical interest and their close relationship to Shakespeare, but after 1600 only representative plays have been con- sidered. The aim of this series has been kept in view, and the discussion, whether of individual plays or of dramatic conditions, has been determined by their importance in the study of a literary type. Tragedy in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries has attracted very little critical atten- tion, and in those fields the book is something of a pioneer. The Elizabethan drama, on the contrary, has been the subject of a vast amount of antiquarian, biographical, and literary research, without which such a treatment as I have attempted would be almost impossible. In order, however, to keep the main purpose in view, it has been necessary to omit nearly all notice of the processes of research or the debates of criticism, and to give only what seem to me the results. -

This thesis examines literature that because of the frequency of its printing, and social relevance, might be called prevalent examples of a tradition. The strength of these traditions over time, and the way in which they reflect values of Lowland Scottish society are also examined. Vernacular literary tradition faced a period of crisis during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and its survival seemed uncertain. Its vitality, however, was reaffirmed mainly because it was able to evolve. The actions of several key individuals were instrumental in its maintenance, but ultimately, it was the strength of the traditions themselves which proved to be most influential. -

It analyses his literary afterlives in two sections: ") "Æ^", in which commentators and reviewers give immediate responses to Ramsay’s life and works and in which his reception diversi¢es with the prominence, later in the century, of Robert Fergusson and Robert Burns; and Æ) "^", a period in which the reading public, the literary marketplace and its contexts are undergoing rapid evolution. The article argues that Ramsay’s role as a well- spring of Scots vernacular poetry is in£uential on the reception of Fergusson and Burns, but also that the prominence, particularly of Burns, in turn a¡ects Ramsay’s reception as the eighteenth century moves into the nineteenth. It reads Ramsay through reviews, anec- dotes and polemical pieces, demonstrating that Ramsay not only in£uenced the course of Scots vernacular poetry throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but also the priorities and preferences of those who were responsible for constructing the canon of Scottish literature in the period. -

Peter Zenzinger Low Life, Primitivism and Honest Poverty: A Socio-cultural Reading of Ramsay and Burns Associating the eighteenth-century Scottish vernacular tradition with "low" subject matter and style may seem little more than stating the obvious. After all, Scots had declined from a literary language to a series of spoken dia lects in the seventeenth century, and in spite of the great variety of poems con tained in James Watson's Choice Collection of Comic and Serious Scots Poems both Ancient and Modem, only Christis Kirk on the Green and Robert Sempill's "The Life and Death of the Piper of Kilbarchan" (often called "Habbie Simpson"), both centering on scenes of rustic festivities, had a truly seminal influence on the Scottish poetry of Allan Ramsay. Ramsay, says Allan MacLaine, "gave to the eighteenth-century Scots revival both its original im petus and its final direction,,,1 echoing Sir William Craigie's suggestion that it is "unnecessary to trace the .. -
