 Self Learning  Self Learning through Spoken Tutorial

It is an initiative Talk to a Teacher of NMEICT, MHRD Govt. of India. To promote IT literacy through Open Source software. The Solapur University, Solapur has appointed Walchand Institute of Technology, Solapur as a RESOURCE (Robust Extensions for Spoken Tutorial project on Open Source Software Usage for Recruitment, Community and Education) Center for promoting the Spoken Tutorial project supported by NMEICT, MHRD & IIT Bombay. The Spoken Tutorial Project is about teaching and learning a particular FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) like Linux, Scilab, LaTeX, PHP & MySQL, Java, C/C++, LibreOffice etc. via an easy Video tool – Spoken Tutorials. Through SELF. (Spoken Tutorial based Education and Learning through Free FOSS study)This distance education method is highly conducive to self-learning. Once one gets started any student or faculty can master the FOSS and also get certificates, Silver/Learners and Gold (based on clearing an assessment test)

WIT as a stepping stone has initiated Spoken Tutorial project in 2012 and the first workshop is conducted on Python (Date:08/10/2012).More than 180 students & around 18 faculties have attended .Till date more than 29 workshops are conducted (Topics: Python, C, C++, Java, Scilab, LibreOffice). More than 2000 students have benefitted from CSE, IT, EXTC, Electronics & Mechanical branch and around 350 students have certified by IIT Bombay through spoken tutorial for various courses.

As an initiative for training to Technical staff. WIT has organized workshop under this platform on Linux, LibreOffice Suite Writer, Calc and Impress for Technical Lab Assistants. Around 38 lab assistants have completed 4 certifications in last 2 years.

 Self Learning through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a rapidly growing form of educational technology and have the potential to deliver world class education. The potential benefits are particularly of paramount importance in developing countries such as India due to paucity of good faculty with regards to scaling up of professional education. India has now officially jumped into the open online courses bandwagon with the government announcing many initiatives with an objective of providing affordable and quality education to all desirous. In India MOOCs are likely to become a part of the university curriculum in the coming years. It is expected that one of the course per semester may be a MOOC. In such a scenario local institutions may find it difficult to manage and execute MOOCs given the issues associated with it. IITBombayX is one such online platform which offers interactive online classes and MOOCs.

Institute is making every effort in this direction. In this connection, almost every faculty member and student from our institute registered to at least one MOOC.

 Student’s assessment of Faculty, System in place  Students regular feedback

Student feedback is taken twice in the every semester to assess the quality of teaching-learning and corrective measures are taken by the faculty based on the feedback. A first feedback of each course is taken in the middle of the semester to find the difficultiesfaced by the students and corrective measures like extra sessions for weak students are taken. A second feedback is taken few days after to assess the effective implementation of the corrective measures taken based on first feedback

 Objectives of the feedback

1. To provide students with the opportunity to put their views on the quality of their learning experiences, as required in preparation for and as part of review processes.

2. To assess the success of academic provision in relation to the expectations of students.

3. To provide feedback to faculty in order to improve delivery and/or content of the study-unit

 Feedback Analysis and Corrective Measures

Being, an on line feedback, detailed analysis of feedback capturing important aspects of teaching learning process and facilities is made available through the software. The feedback coordinator then shares this analysis with Head of the Department ● Head then shares the feedback and its analysis with individual faculty member and discusses about his performance, strengths and weaknesses ● Any weaknesses/ issue regarding teaching-learning is discussed with the concerned faculty by a team of senior faculty members and necessary corrective measures are suggested, which are implemented immediately. ● The effective implementation of these measures is validated by a second feedback which is administered few days after first feedback ● Feedback / suggestions regarding infrastructure / facilities are analyzed and corrective measures are initiated immediately

 Implementation of Feedback This on line feedback is conducted by feedback coordinator with the help of technical supporting staff. Below are the details –

20. Best Practices adopted, if any

● PLC - A model incorporating ET practices for continues improvement in teaching Learning process.

Sudden expansion in engineering education has led to paucity of faculty members. Delivery of engineering education through large no of untrained faculty members has suffered significantly due to lower quality course delivery & imparting poor skill set. To overcome challenge of a paucity of trained & experienced teacher, we have formulated Professional Learning community (PLC) which undertakes training of faculty members for pedagogies & use of ICT while employing various ET practices empowering faculty for content delivery & carrying out research in ET while scaling up.
