Feurle Schwarzen 365/4, A-6861 Alberschwende E-Mail: [email protected] Abstract The Apollo butterfly (Parnassius apollo) is a highly endangered and therefore nationally and internationally protected species. The butterfly still occurs in the international natural preserve Naturpark Nagelfluhkette, located between Allgäu (Bavaria, Ger- many) and in the Bregenzerwald (Vorarlberg, Austria) <http://www.nagelfluhkette.info/>. As knowledge about the condition of this local population is sparse, the aim of the present study was to record the Apollo distribution for the Austrian part of the natural preserve. In order to assess the quality of the population, mapping of conglomerate rocks with a plant cover of White Stonecrop (Sedum album), the only larval feeding plant, was carried out. Apollo larvae as well as adult butterflies were counted and mapped by using aerial views and GIS. We found few individuals of larval and imaginal state scattered in the valleys Leck- nertal and Balderschwangertal, interspersed by huge areas which do not provide appropriate habitats. In the two most southern areas located in the municipality of Sibratsgfäll (Feuerstätter and Hochrubach), we did not observe any feeding plant nor Apollo butterflies. By counting imaginal butterflies along a defined transect on an alpine pasture in the Lecknertal, we were able to esti- mate the temporal occurrence dynamics of its population. We documented a case of predation on an Apollo larva by ants. Ants seem to contribute to larval mortality – aside from further factors to be identified. Direct and indirect anthropogenic influence of alpine agriculture land use on the local Apollo populations needs to be further investigated. We observed a positive attitude of the farmers concerning the Apollo butterfly, which is a very important base for the development of conservation programs. To provide the necessary knowledge for the development of an appropriate strategy, further investigations need to be done in order to conserve this endangered butterfly species in this part of the Alps. What the animals did not eat was processed into silage as animal feed and in the winter, the boiled leaves were welcome at the animals. There have been also other uses for this plant: It was a perfect fully biological toilet paper.

With our Symposium, we want to introduce a platform where scientists working in various environments and disciplines related to mountain livestock farming can present and discuss their work, interact with a diversified audience and exchange ideas. Discovering similarities as well as differences, and learning from each other are the main aims of our meeting. Therefore, within the three days of the Symposium there are times for scientific talks as well as for personal interactions and exchange of experiences between participants to stimulate discussions. The implication is that his sojourn in the high-altitudes of the Alps is considered to be connected with pastoral nomadism. Regrettably any archaeological evidence for the existence of such Neolithic alpine pastoral systems is missing up to now and the assumption is based on palynological data only. However, also the palynological record is ambiguous, because pasture indicators in the alpine regions react positive on grazing as well as on fertilization induced by a higher runoff of precipitation. Thus alpine pasture indicators reflect both grazing pressure and climatic change. Anyhow, alpine pastoral systems are a common practice in Alpine animal husbandry, but from an economic point of view such a seasonal vertical transhumance is costly. There are three main reasons for its practice: i) climatic, ii) economic (mainly in connection with population pressure or mining activities), and iii) cultural ideology. In this study we tested the above mentioned reasons in an interdisciplinary study on the beginning of pastoral activities in high altitudes in the central part of the Eastern Alps.

Fieldwork studies were conducted in 2010 and 2011, and the primary goals of this study were to determine the quality of transhumance activities in Karadere village, structure of herds, distance, direction, and periodicity of migration, characteristics of dwellings, sedentation status, characteristics of residence, the special role agriculture plays in the economic system, and the contribution of transhumance in Karadere to those who sustain this activity, to the region, and to the country. Key words: Highland, Transhumance, Burhaniye, Western Turkey Introduction Traditional transhumance has been conducted in some parts of Europe and Asia for centuries. Transhumance differs as each region has its own natural and cultural features. However, it has many similar features in North Africa, the south of Europe, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia (Daryll, 1934; Douglas, 1969, Braudel 1990). Transhumance is different from nomadic animal husbandry. There is a close relationship between permanent settlement areas and areas used seasonally for agriculture and animal husbandry (Douglas, 1969). During winter, people and herds live in villages, which are permanent settlement areas. They feed on previously stocked hay, dried leaves of trees and plants, and some cereals.
