COLLECTOR: Object/Environment

COLLECTOR: Object/Environment The Museum of Contemporary Crafts of the American Craftsmen's Council — June 4 through September 12, 1965 COVER: CERAMIC PLATE - HENRY TAKEMOTO COLLECTION MR. AND MRS. WILLIAM BURGESS This exhibition has been assembled to illustrate the important recent growth of collecting contemporary art in the United States and to show, through photo murals, the successful use of these works in the homes of several major American collectors. Twenty-one collections are represented from a wide range of geographical locations — from , New Mexico, Arizona, Illinois, Arkansas, Georgia, , Massachusetts, New Jersey, . Each shows a diversity of taste and imagination, yet, common to all is the interaction between the collector and the object. Each collector acquires the object for its beauty and uniqueness as a work of art, for the pleasure of the aesthetic experience, and simultane- ously to enrich the home environment. The increasingly active role of the collector in contemporary American art has provided a more favorable climate than ever before for the artist in which to live and work. It is often the encouragement and support pro- vided by the collector that enables the artist to explore more fully the possibilities of his medium. We would like to express our appreciation to the collectors who have so graciously lent us their pieces and allowed us to photograph their homes.
