Sommelier's Selection Domaine Comtes Georges de Vogüé Producing a mere 2,700 cases per year, the Domaine Comtes George de Vogüé is one of the most important and prestigious producers in Burgundy’s famed Cotes de Nuits. The Comte’s granddaughters and current co-owners Claire and Marie assembled their winemaking team in 1986, and the team has been intact ever since. The estate’s wines are concentrated around the esteemed terroirs of Chambolle-Musigny, a village that takes its name from the fabled Grand Cru Musigny vineyard of which the domaine owns an impressive sixty-five percent. Vineyards are plowed, weed-killers are not used, and chemical fertilizers are avoided as well. Yields are kept low through severe pruning and early bud removal in the spring, resulting in richly perfumed and concentrated wines. Oak barrels are used very judiciously with the intention of allowing the purity of fruit to shine. While the village wine is an excellent introduction to the prowess of premium red burgundy, the Domaine’s Premier Cru is a fantastic selection of fruit from the domaine’s younger vines in the Musigny Grand Cru , and is one of the best values in the Cotes de Nuits. The Domaine’s treasures, however, reside in its two Grand Cru selections. The Bonnes Mares offers slightly more softness and approachability in its youth, while the Musigny “Vielles Vignes” is renowned for its limitless depth of flavor, rich and complex bouquet, and longevity in the cellar. It is truly one of Burgundy’s iconic red wines. He employs organic practices but hasn’t sought out “EN BAS DE VAUVRY” certification, preferring instead to prioritize the intrinsic health of the ecosystem and his vines. Shipments of products using Cachet-Tag commenced in October 2018. If the Cachet-Tag is removed from the wine bottle, the NFC tag breaks and the data on it can no longer be read.
