Great Lakes yellow perch I recently receive4 an interim report from the State of Ohio on red worm infestation of yellow perch in Lake Erie. The report is very long and tedious so 1·want·to summarize ·for you ·souie of the information which I think is important. The description of the red worm parasite in our 1-IDNR. disease manual is largely.outdated by this work. First,. the Nematodes or round worms. locally called "red worms",. were positively identified as Eustrongylides tubifex. The genus Eustrongylides normally completes its life cycle in the proventiculus of fish-eating birds. E. tubifex was fed to domestic mallards and the red worms successfu11y matured but did not reach patentcy (females with obvtous egg development). Later lab examination of various wild aquatic birds collected on Lake Erie.showed that the red­ breasted merganser is the primary host for the adult worms. Next,. large numbers of perch were (and are still) being examined for rate of parasitism and its pot~ntial effects.

The taxa Monogenea, Cestoda, Digenea, Nematoda, Acanthocephala, Crustacea and Hirudinea are covered. A total of 169 taxonomic entities are recorded in rainbow trout worldwide although few of these may prove synonyms in future anal­ yses of the parasite specimens. These records include Monogenea (15), Cestoda (27), Digenea (37), Nematoda (39), Acanthocephala (23), Crustacea (17), Mollusca (6) and Hirudinea ( 5). HOLLOWAY, JR. Department of Biology, University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, North Dakota 58202 ABSTRACT: Results of a survey in 1975 of the parasite fauna of fish from four North Dakota rivers are presented. Over 270 fish representing 24 species were examined, and 44 parasite species, mostly helminths, recorded. Of the fish examined, 34% carried ectoparasites. Endoparasites occurred in 76% of the fish. Four forms are reported from new hosts and 22 parasites are reported for the first time from North Dakota. The parasites are systematically arranged showing hosts, location within hosts, incidence and geographic location. The pathogenic and epizootic significance of Myxobolus sp., Diplostomulum spathaceum, and Hysteromorpha triloba, is discussed. Observations on other para- sites are recorded. An extensive survey of the fish parasite fauna in North Dakota was initiated in 1975. As part of this survey, intensive fish sampling was undertaken within a 55-km stretch of the Missouri River below Garrison Dam, James River from the headwaters to Jamestown Reservoir, Sheyenne River from the headwaters to Lake Ashtabula, and the entire Wild Rice River. The Missouri River and its tributary, the James River, are in the Mississippi River Drainage while the Shey- enne and Wild Rice rivers, tributaries of the Red River of the North, are in the Hudson Bay Drainage. No earlier literature exists on fish parasites of the James, Sheyenne, and Wild Rice rivers.

May 1970 Introduction The first paper to be concerned with parasites of canadian fishes was pUblished in 1879 by Prof. R. Ramsay Wright of the University of Toronto. One of the fundamental aspects in understanding the biology, diversity and epidemiology of a parasite lies in its proper identification. In the present study, morphological and molecular characterization of Clinostomum metacercariae recovered from an ornamental fish, Trichogaster fasciata, was carried out in order to ascertain its identity. To serve the purpose, scanning electron micrographs and gene sequences for two commonly used molecular markers, i.e., nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 (rDNA-ITS2) and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (mtCO1) were obtained. The sequences were further used for generating similarity index matrix as well as inferring phylogenies. Light and electron microscopic observations on metacercariae of the parasite revealed that it belongs to the genus Clinostomum . Identification of the same up to the level of species was made possible through sequence and phylogenetic analyses. The ITS2 sequence analyses of our species ( KX758630) showed similarity to unidentified Clinostomum sp. reported from Nigeria (KY865625) and China (KP110579), and C. tilapiae recorded from South Africa (KX034048) and Nigeria (KY649353). However, the CO1 gene analyses suggested it to be highly identical to C. philippinense and the same was also corroborated in the phylogenetic analysis. Thus, morphological and molecular characterization revealed that the recovered metacercariae belong to the species C.

BACKGROUND: Triatomines, vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, are able to develop morphological changes in response to adaptation to new habitats. Different triatomine species might converge phenotypically when inhabiting the same ecotope. In this study we describe this phenomenon for two Rhodnius species often found occurring in the palm tree Copernicia prunifera. METHODS: 117 palm trees from 19 municipalities of northeastern Brazil were inspected for the presence of triatomines. Sampling covered almost the entire geographic distribution of C. prunifera. Species-level identification of triatomines was achieved via morphological and molecular taxonomy based on a 630-bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (mtCytb). RESULTS: Seventy-four palm trees (63%) were infested with 389 triatomines of the following species: Rhodnius nasutus, Rhodnius neglectus, Triatoma sordida, and Triatoma pseudomaculata. R. nasutus and R. neglectus were by far the most frequently captured species (51 and 46%, respectively). The molecular analysis revealed inconsistencies in the morphological identification of R. neglectus and R. nasutus. Specimens morphologically identified as R. nasutus clustered together with R. neglectus reference sequences (Posterior Probability = 1.0). These molecularly identified R. neglectus specimens displayed a pale yellowish-brown color without prominent darker connexivum spots, as observed for R. nasutus.
