Only in recent years have specifics surfaced on the people (Mho founded this community. Up until recently, we had next to nothing on the founders of this area. Although written in German, and a stopping point for most people, Elizabeth Ginsberg has detailed like never before the roots of my ancestors. She went back into the original German names with the help of a man named Karl Jestaedt for Petersburg, Germany. He is a distant cousin of the Estadt family of Noble County. In a nutshell, we have found that the Crock family (Krack in Germany) stiff owns the same 40-acre farm in Niederkafcach, Germany as when Johannes Krack and his wife Anna Barbara Mattheis came to Noble County in 1841. They came from the neighboring vilage that was what I caH the 'eye of the storm.* This is MHtelkalbach. Here in 1835 the Scheoppners, Hohmanns and Heits left their homes and went to Bremen, Germany to board the Ulysses ship for Baltimore. They stayed in Wheeling, Virginia (at the time) and then came and founded Fulda, Ohio. Others would follow. She was born a Heil, and her father was from Mittelkafcach. She is part us and part them. And what a big help she has been. I enclose a sheet of names and dates regarding the Heil fondly of Mittelkal- bach. The information I am seeking concerns the generation of Peter Heil and his children, such as Katharina 1790 and Joh. Peter 1788, possibly Heinrich 1791 and others. The descendents of Heinrich went to Wisconsin, while Katharina1s children went to Ohio. Joh. Peter's family stayed in Mittelkalbareh, except for two children who also went to Wisconsin and eventually intermarried. You ask about "Felty" Weaver. I don't remember which source I used, but I came to the conclusion that Felty Valentin Weber might have come from Oberkalbach, the village next to Mittelkalbach. Oberkalbach became a Protestant village after the reformation and belonged to a different jurisdiction. Maybe Karl Krieger can check this in Oberkalbach, if you must have the information. I do not have the passenger lists at hand, they are packed away somewhere. Maybe you can access these lists via computer. When I worked on the Fulda Siedler articles in the early 1990's, I did not yet have the KESAUS book, which I obtained after publicaiion of these articles, in about 1995- Since then I have found a few more emigrants from the Fulda region, who settled in Fulda/Ohio, such as the Bapps, who came from Eichenried (p. 172). 1 Johann floehrig; I have a notation regarding the naturalization papers of a John Rorrig, born at Neuhof/Hessen on Oct. 15, 1809* These papers date from 1840. In it we date of departure from Bremen is given as April 8, I837t arrival in Baltimore in July, from there directly to Wheeling,W.Va. The marriage lists of St. James, Wheeling, list the marriage of John Roerrick and Cath. Gerst, in presence of Johann Gerst and Johann Heil, on Sept. 14, I837. 0 ohn Rorrig was a shoemaker. The Hesaus book lists j^oehrigs from flieden, ruecker&,doellbach. (my machine is balking, does not print capitals.) the John rohrig listed in the fulda/ohio parish book could have been a son or nephew of the above John rorrig of the 1840 natura- lization papers, apparently this latter jonn"rohrig was not a member of the fulda concregation early on. of the roehrigs listed in hesaus, only Juliana roehrig from rueckers emigrated in 1837, all the others 3 came in the 1840's. johann kress. born 1811 same as johann bl.kress. i have a notation that a marriage between "John gross and catharina betz/'took place dec. 26, I838 at st. james, wheeling, w.va. in presence of peter ebert and adam ritz. the officiating priest was not familiar with german spelling and often misspelled the names of the marriage participants, anna catharina betz might have come from veitsteinbach, born dec. 1808. johann gerst. born 1802, i have no ancestral village for this johann gerst or the other johann d. gerst. according to hesaus this name occurs in buechenberg and fulda. emigrants named gerst also came from some villages around schluechtern, such as sannerz, weiperz, herolz, and several emigrated from these places in the 1840's. i doubt that these persons went to fulda/ohio, though. nikolaus kullmann. born 1806. according to hesaus, the name kullman occurs in schweben, buchenrod, opperz. adam kullman from schweben emigrated in 1837» as did johann kullman from opperz. the others emigrated in I847.llnicholas coleman" /spelling of the priest in wheeling, w.va.J and "Catherine joerick"were married aug. 10, 1837 at st. james church, m. katharina ihrig (correct spelling according to hesaus) emigrated from kleinlueder in I837. since buchenrod is the closest village to kleinlueder, i am inclined to think that nikolaus kullmann might have come from there, just conjecture, schweben and opperz are farther away from kleinlueder, and it would have been much more difficult for nikolaus and catherina ihrig to meet. Joseph and franz kraut.: are a mystery, my research on that name came to a dead end. mr. jestaedt could not find them either, i even wrote to geisa(former eastern zone of germanyj because i think they came from a village northeast of fulda. the name kranu occurred also in the city of fulda, but the dates don't agree, maybe mr. krieger has more luck, k r a m is the spelling according to fulda/$arish book. bayern and bavaria are one and the same state. Is where in bayern did johann noil come from . just having the information that he came from there(without having the name of the ancestral villageJ is not enough, the place of birth is the important and often unattainable information. what is johann seeling's place of birth in b avaria , same for franz fischer. i am not aware of a hesaus book for bavaria, but it might exist, since i am only interested in emigrants from the immediate area around f ulda/germany, i have not looked for persons from other states in germany. however, i have listed these above persons in my siedler articles, because according to their names, they could have come from the fulda axrea. thank you for the photos and the check. sincerely, eliza$eth ginsrerg 1 encl. He searches the archives in Fulda, finds information in Latin and translates it to German and English.
