Bernini began sculpting it in 1622 after he finished The Rape of Proserpina. He stopped working on it from 1623 to 1624 to sculpt David, before completing it in 1625. With notable technical accuracy, the natural agility of this work shows the astonishing moment when the nymph turns into a laurel tree. The artist uses his exceptional technical skill to turn the marble into roots, leaves and windswept hair. Psychological research, combined with typically Baroque expressiveness, renders the emotion of Daphnes terror, caught by the god in her desperate journey, still ignorant of her ongoing transformation. Apollo, thinking he has achieved his objective, is caught in the moment he becomes aware of the metamorphosis, before he is able to react, watching astonished as his victim turns into a laurel tree. For Apollos head, Bernini looked to Apollo Belvedere, which was in the Vatican at the time. The base includes two scrolls, the first containing the lines of the distich by Maffeo Barberini, a friend of Cardinal Scipione Borghese and future Pope Urban VIII. It explores the theme of vanitas in beauty and pleasure, rendered as a Christian moralisation of a profane theme. The second scroll was added in the mid-1700s. -

Fort Vol. 2 1976 Planning versus fortification: Sangallo's project for the defence of Rome Simon Pepper Since 1527, when Rome had been captured and sacked by the mutinous soldiers of Charles V, it had been clear that the defences of the Papal capital were hopelessly outdated. The walls of the Borgo (the Vatican precinct) were constructed during the pontificate of Leo IV (847-855): those of Trastevere and the left bank, enclosing by far the largest part of the city, dated from the reign of the Emperor Aurelian (AD270-75) [1]. Impressive both for their length and antiquity, these walls were poorly maintained and fundamentally unsuitable for defence against gunpowder artillery. In 1534 the Romans were once again forcefully reminded of their vulnerability when a large Turkish fleet moored off the Tiber estuary. Fortunately the hostile intentions of the Turks were directed elsewhere: after taking on fresh water they sailed north to raid the Tuscan coastline. But in the immediate aftermath of the Turkish scare the newly elected Paul III committed himself to an ambitious scheme of re-fortification. Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, advised by many of the leading architects and soldiers employed by the Pope, was commissioned to submit design proposals [2]. Father Alberto Guglielmotti, the nineteenth-century historian of the Papal armed forces, tells us that Sangallo and his consultants decided to replace the Aurelian wall with a new line of works defending the developed areas on both banks of the river. The 18000 metre Aurelian circumfer- ence was to be reduced by half, a decision which is not difficult to understand when one glances at a contemporary map of the city. -

Lot and His Daughters Pen and Brown Ink and Brown Wash, with Traces of Framing Lines in Brown Ink
Giovanni Francesco Barbieri GUERCINO (Cento 1591 - Bologna 1666) Lot and his Daughters Pen and brown ink and brown wash, with traces of framing lines in brown ink. Laid down on an 18th century English mount, inscribed Guercino at the bottom. Numbered 544. at the upper right of the mount. 180 x 235 mm. (7 1/8 x 8 7/8 in.) This drawing is a preparatory compositional study for one of the most significant works of Guercino’s early career; the large canvas of Lot and His Daughters painted in 1617 for Cardinal Alessandro Ludovisi, the archbishop of Bologna and later Pope Gregory XV, and today in the monastery of San Lorenzo at El Escorial, near Madrid. This was one of three paintings commissioned from Guercino by Cardinal Ludovisi executed in 1617, the others being a Return of the Prodigal Son and a Susanna and the Elders. The Lot and His Daughters is recorded in inventories of the Villa Ludovisi in Rome in 1623 and 1633, but in 1664 both it and the Susanna and the Elders were presented by Prince Niccolò Ludovisi, nephew of Gregory XV, to King Phillip IV of Spain. The two paintings were placed in the Escorial, where the Lot and His Daughters remains today, while the Susanna and the Elders was transferred in 1814 to the Palacio Real in Madrid and is now in the Prado. Painted when the artist was in his late twenties, the Lot and his Daughters is thought to have been the first of the four Ludovisi pictures to be painted by Guercino. -

Unfold the line of your bishops.” Tertullian, 3rd century A.D. A special visible expression of Apostolic Succession is given in the consecration/ ordination of a bishop through the laying on of hands by other bishops who have, themselves, been ordained in the same manner through a succession of bishops leading back to the apostles of Jesus. The role of the bishop must always be understood within the context of the authentic handing on of the faith from one generation to the next generation of the whole Church, beginning with the Christian community of the time of the Apostles. Thus, as the Church is the continuation of the apostolic community, so the bishops are the continuation of the ministry of the college of the apostles of Jesus within that apostolic community. It is essentially collegial rather than monarchical. This tradition is affirmed in the teaching ministry of Church leadership, and authentically celebrated in the sacraments, with particular attention to the sacrament of holy orders (ordination) and the laying on of hands. Apostolic Succession is the belief of Catholic Christians that the bishops are successors of the original apostles of Jesus. This is understood as the bishops being ordained into the episcopal collegium or “sacramental order.” As bishops are by tradition consecrated by at least three other bishops, the actual number of lists of succession can become quite substantial. Italian Villas and Their Gardens By Edith Wharton INTRODUCTION ITALIAN GARDEN-MAGIC Though it is an exaggeration to say that there are no flowers in Italian gardens, yet to enjoy and appreciate the Italian garden-craft one must always bear in mind that it is independent of floriculture. The Italian garden does not exist for its flowers; its flowers exist for it: they are a late and infrequent adjunct to its beauties, a parenthetical grace counting only as one more touch in the general effect of enchantment. This is no doubt partly explained by the difficulty of cultivating any but spring flowers in so hot and dry a climate, and the result has been a wonderful development of the more permanent effects to be obtained from the three other factors in garden-composition—marble, water and perennial verdure—and the achievement, by their skilful blending, of a charm independent of the seasons. It is hard to explain to the modern garden-lover, whose whole conception of the charm of gardens is formed of successive pictures of flower-loveliness, how this effect of enchantment can be produced by anything so dull and monotonous as a mere combination of clipped green and stonework. The traveller returning from Italy, with his eyes and imagination full of the ineffable Italian garden-magic, knows vaguely that the enchantment exists; that he has been under its spell, and that it is more potent, more enduring, more intoxicating to every sense than the most elaborate and glowing effects of modern horticulture; but he may not have found the key to the mystery. -
