Sex, Spirits, and Sensibility: Human Generation in British Medicine, Anatomy, and Literature, 1660-1780 Sex, Spirits, and Sensibility: Human Generation in British Medicine, Anatomy, and Literature, 1660-1780 Darren Neil Wagner PhD The University of York Department of History September 2013 Abstract This thesis explores the physiological idea of animal spirits in relation to nerves, sex, and reproduction in the culture of sensibility. That physiology held the sex organs of both females and males to be exceptionally sensitive parts of the body that profoundly affected individuals’ constitutions and minds. Sexual sensations, desires, volition, and behaviour depended upon animal spirits and nerves. A central concern in this perception of the body and mind was the conflict between rationality from the intellectual will and sexual feelings from the genitalia. The idea that the body and mind interacted through animal spirits became influential in Georgian culture through anatomical and medical writings, teachings, and visual displays, but also through its resonance in literature about sensibility. This research predominantly draws upon material and print cultures of medicine, anatomy, and literature from 1660-1780. The analysis highlights the roles of gender, markets, literary modes, scientific practices, visual demonstrations, medical vocations, and broader social and political discourses in conceptions of the body and mind in relation to sex and reproduction. Ultimately, this study fleshes out the sensible and sexual body, which cultural and literary historians have frequently referred to, and emphasizes how the organs of generation commanded particular O'MALLEY JOHN EvELYN has often been described as a virtuoso in the seventeenth-century meaning of that word, and if it be recalled that the Earl of Arundel, the greatest of the virtuosi was his patron, that Evelyn was a member of the Royal Society almost from its inception and a diligent attendant of its meetings, which at that time dealt with a wide variety of curiosa and technological as well as scientific problems, that he was a vocal and literary exponent and collector of the odd and the artistic, and a recognized authority on architecture and gardens, he must certainly be classed among the notable virtuosi of his day. But within his multifarious interests and their related activities Evelyn appears to have had a particular regard for medicine, one that transcended the usual concern of those members of his class who did not espouse that subject professionally. Except for somewhat intermittent studies at Oxford, undertaken more as an obligation than because of genuine desire, medicine was the only discipline in which he deliberately took any formal instruction, and throughout the many years covered by his Diary medicine and matters ancillary to it received uncommon attention."     • Fanny Hill Now: A Half Century of Liberty Nicholas D. Nace Hampden- Sydney College The history of formal literary censorship in the United States begins and ends with John Cleland’s 1749 Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure. In Massa- chusetts, in 1821, the book was the subject of the country’s first obscenity trial, and in 1966, after a case again in Massachusetts, the US Supreme court ruled — by a vote of six to three — that the novel could be freely pub- lished under the protection of the First Amendment.1 The scholarly ground- work for this victory had been laid out by Ian Watt’s Rise of the Novel (1957), and while Memoirs gets no mention in this foundational work, the version of novelistic realism Watt outlined enabled those who would defend Cle- land’s novel to align it with the works of Samuel Richardson and Henry Fielding, both of whom are mentioned in the professorial testimony made before the court. The trial was noteworthy for, among other things, how little attention was paid to Cleland the author and how much was paid to the psychology of Fanny Hill, the novel’s narrator.     THE BIBLE & CRITICAL THEORY My Beloved is a Bass Line: Musical, De-colonial Interventions in Song Criticism and Sacred Erotic Discourse Heidi Epstein, University of Saskatchewan Abstract How might musical settings of the Song of Songs provide critical interventions in the politics of love? This case study builds a womanist intertextual matrix for the Song such that its amatory and horticultural language can be reinterpreted as irreducibly “de-colonial.” Reread through Chela Sandoval’s model of love, Alice Walker’s search for her foremothers’ and foresisters’ gardens, and Toni Morrison’s “commentary” on the Song (Beloved), the biblical text circulates de-colonial energies. And, given that music figures centrally in these womanists’ genealogies of love, a de-colonial reading of the Song mandates deconstruction of a subaltern musical archive within the Eurocentric discourse of sacred eroticism, a discourse that the Song sustains as an Ur-text. If the biblical female protagonist’s longing and seeking are reread as de-colonial and trickster-esque, she begets a subaltern musical family tree—audible today in the “Shulammitic” bass playing and protest singing of Meshell Ndegeocello. Sep. 2021 “By the Author of Fanny Hill”: Selling John Cleland Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure was published anonymously in 1748-49, but it was not long before a name was attached to the title, or rather two names: that of its self-narrating protagonist Fanny Hill, and that of its self-concealing author John Cleland. Cleland’s success as a novelist might even be measured by the degree to which the fame of his fictional creation outstrips his own.
