JUNIOR SCHOOL DRESS CODE The dress code for the children at the Junior School is one of “common dress.” Clothing may be purchased anywhere you wish. Sweatshirts and other clothing items are available from the Shady Side Academy Junior School Parents' Association. Many parents buy their uniform at Lands’ End. Our purchasing code is 9000-3398-6. Girls and Boys Common Dress Shirt: A white, navy or yellow collared shirt either long or short-sleeved or a turtleneck jersey. Shirttails are to be tucked in. No tank tops, spaghetti straps, or midriff tops. Sweater: Navy or white, with or without a Shady Side monogram. Sweatshirt: Shady Side sweatshirts only. Sweatshirts may not be oversized. Pants: Navy or khaki pants. Pants or slacks must be tailored and should not drag on the floor. No sweatpants, leggings, yoga pants, velour or gaucho pants. Belts must be worn if pants have belt loops. Shorts: Navy or khaki shorts--no running, gym shorts or short shorts. Shorts are to be no shorter than mid-thigh in length. Shoes: Tie or Velcro tennis shoes with non-marking soles. In inclement weather, students may wear boots and change into tennis shoes at school. Socks: Navy or white socks must be worn. Girls may wear navy or white tights. Girls have the additional options of: Skirts/Skorts, Jumpers: Must be navy or khaki. Skirts and dresses are to be no shorter than 3” above the knee, or longer than mid-calf. Tights: Navy or white Additional Guidelines: ● Hats are not to be worn indoors. ● Make-up, glitter or fragrances are not permitted. ● No revealing clothing or clothing revealing undergarments (long-sleeved T-shirts under short-sleeves, bra straps, etc.) ● Hair should be neatly trimmed and off the face. Dress-Up Days "Dress-up" clothes are required for special occasions, such as Moving-Up and Recognition Day, and Closing Exercises. Dress-up clothes include a dress shirt, tie, and slacks or a suit, dress shoes and dark socks for boys and a dress, skirt, jumper, or dressy pants and blouse with dress shoes for girls. No dresses with spaghetti straps, strapless or “prom-type” dresses permitted. On these special days, the pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade children should and other children may bring a change of clothes. All students should bring tennis shoes for gym and/or recess. Dress-Down Days “Dress-down” days are usually sponsored by the school or a classroom and have a theme or charity donation involved. Students will be instructed what the theme or charity that particular day will be and what dress will be required. A notice will also be sent home to parents in backpacks prior to the “dress-down” day. Dress on dress-down days should still follow rules of good taste; e.g. no short shorts, no inappropriate sayings on t-shirts; jeans will be ok, and footwear should always follow the code listed above. Clothing Requirements for PE and Recess Pre-k, kindergarten, first and second grades: Regular athletic shoes are required for safety reasons. Please do not have your child wear high-soled shoes, or slip- ons. Students are not permitted to wear jewelry during class. Third, fourth and fifth grades: Shady Side tee shirt, Shady Side gym shorts, sweatshirt and sweat pants. Cleats are optional for outdoor play. Regular athletic shoes are required for safety reasons. Please do not have your child wear high-soled shoes, or slip-ons. Students are not permitted to wear jewelry during class. Approximate cost of all clothing needed is $70.00. Required clothing is available through the physical education department and will be billed through the business office. Athletic shoes are required for each student for recess. If your child is unable to participate in full gym or recess activities, he or she must have a note indicating which activities are restricted. Please make certain all of your child's clothes are marked with his/her name, including gloves, boots and shoes. .
