The Junior 2018 - 2019

An Introduction Welcome to the Junior School

Welcome to another exciting year at Dulwich Junior School. This handbook contains the practical information about the expectations and routines of life in the Junior School which we hope you will find very helpful.

It is the aim of the Junior School to make the of the younger members of the College as exciting and valuable an experience as possible. We take the pastoral care of each pupil very seriously as we believe that happy, confident boys will thrive and gain the full benefit from their years at Dulwich. We also seek to establish an excellent home-school partnership to ensure that the boys make the best possible progress in their time with us. Please note that this booklet does not contain our curriculum guidance, as this will be presented in a separate booklet at the start of the new school year in September.

Junior School boys benefit from being part of a nurturing and purpose-built environment that is appropriate to their age and needs, but has the advantage of being part of the College with its outstanding facilities and expertise. Our boys Dr Toby Griffiths perform in the Edward Alleyn Theatre, play fixtures against other on the Head of Junior School extensive playing fields, and swim in our pool. They go to the for their instrumental lessons, have specialist Junior School facilities for Art, DT and Science, and they enjoy significant events such as Speech Day in the Great Hall.

We very much look forward to working with you during the next year, to create a stimulating environment where the boys can accept academic challenges, and enjoy learning about themselves and each other, to become skilled, motivated, interesting and interested people.

Dr Toby Griffiths Head of Dulwich College Junior School May 2018

2 Information for Parents

Organisation There are approximately 220 boys in the Junior School in 12 classes, three per year group from Year 3 to Year 6. Each of the three Year 3 Forms has approximately 15 boys and this gives us the opportunity to accept a small number of pupils into each of the other Year Groups. Each Form has a Form Tutor, who is responsible for the pastoral care and overall academic progress of the pupils in his or her care. In Year 3 the Form Tutor teaches the Form for almost all subjects, apart from PE and Games, Music and possibly French. As they progress through the Junior School, boys will be taught by a number of subject specialist teachers. At all times the expertise of the specialist Junior School teachers is used to the best advantage of the pupils. A meeting will be held in June to enable new parents to meet their son’s Form Tutor before the school year begins. During the first half of the Michaelmas Term we hold social and curriculum evenings in Year Groups to give all parents the opportunity to meet the Form Tutor informally. Parents are encouraged to contact the Form Tutor whenever they have a concern. As Head of Junior School I am always ready to meet parents to share any concerns.

Office The Junior School Office is manned from 8.00am until 5.00pm. Mrs Jo Maudsley is the Head’s PA, Mrs JoAnn Thornton is the Junior School Registrar and Mrs Catherine Holmes is the Junior School Receptions and Junior School Secretary. All visitors and parents are asked to report to the Junior School Reception before proceeding anywhere in the building. It would be very helpful if you could report absences either by phone, 0208 299 9248, or email junior. [email protected] before 8.30am. If boys arrive late at school they should report to Mrs Holmes before going on to their lessons.

Core Values Do the right thing We make safe, sensible choices and use our common sense. We are honest and we stand up for what is right.

Care for others We look after other people, our community, our school and the environment. We show respect by being polite, kind and tolerant.

Join in We all contribute to the school community. We participate actively in lessons and activities and we lend a helping hand. Everyone’s voice is heard.

Strive for excellence We work hard in lessons and give of our best to all our endeavours. We focus on the progress we have made and the effort we have given.

We take any reported incidents of bullying very seriously. In the Anti-Bullying Policy, we define bullying as ‘any behaviour which is intended to hurt someone in any way or to make someone feel uncomfortable or unhappy.’ If you sense that your son is unhappy at school, or he reports that he has been on the receiving end of unkind comments or deeds, then please contact his Form Tutor without hesitation. The Form Tutor will acknowledge receipt of your email or letter within the same working day and will then undertake a further investigation of the incident. He or she may involve Mrs Knight, the Deputy Head Pastoral of the Junior School, or Dr Griffiths, the Head of Junior School. They will keep in close contact with you as the investigation proceeds until it has been resolved.

Rewards and We want to reward boys for their good efforts and attitude. Boys in all Year Sanctions Groups can earn House points both for the academic endeavours and their good behaviour. House points count towards certificates, which are presented by their Housemaster in an Assembly. The Head Teacher’s Award carries five House points and gives boys the opportunity to go to Dr Griffiths’ office to show their exceptional work or to discuss their outstanding effort. All boys can also earn commendations for work, which carry three House points. All of these are presented in Assembly.

4

When things go awry, boys may be given a ‘warning’. You will see a ‘W’ recorded in your son’s Prep Diary. If the warning has not had the desired impact then he may be given a lunchtime detention and you will see a ‘D’ in his Prep Diary. If he is involved in a more serious incident, such as bullying another boy, he would be given an after school detention and you will receive a letter to this effect from the Head. Any sanctions the boys receive are recorded in their Prep Diaries.

In exceptional circumstances, for instance if a boy has physically or verbally abused another pupil or has shown a disregard of our Core Values, he could be suspended from school for a short time or even excluded permanently. However, our default position is to use rewards and encouragement in considerably greater measure than punishments and sanctions.

The College-wide Code of Conduct and College rules are reproduced in full in the boys’ Prep Diaries.

Positions of Junior School boys have the opportunity to take up positions of responsibility Responsibility in the Junior School. All Year 6 are Prefects and other positions include House Captains, Form Captains, ‘Buddies’, Librarians, Open Morning Guides and membership of the School Council.

Religion and Spirituality Dulwich is a Church of England Foundation, welcoming boys of all faiths in developing their spiritual and religious awareness. There are many opportunities for meeting, worship and discussion. Assemblies and acts of worship are a regular part of College life and reflect the diverse nature of the College community which currently includes Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and Buddhist students. The College Chaplain regularly leads Junior School Assemblies and services at the chapel.

Parent-Teacher Dialogue The primary means for home / school communication is via Email. Please use the email address of your son’s Form Tutor and copy in the office on junior. [email protected] if you are letting us know about any logistical changes. The teacher’s primary role is to teach and look after the boys so please do not expect an immediate response from teaching staff to emails, but they will get back to you within twenty four hours. If it is more urgent please use the office email address and the admin team will ensure it is actioned more quickly. The Prep Diary is another link between home and school. It provides a means for the boys to record their homework and reading each day and staff will use it to communicate rewards and sanctions. We expect parents to sign the Prep Diary once a week to ensure that the boys are showing parents what they are doing in school. Form Tutors will check Prep Diaries regularly to ensure that boys are organising themselves effectively.

PE and Games Mr James Davies, who is in charge of PE and Games in the Junior School, will send out a list at the start of each term giving details of the arrangements for PE and Games for each Year Group for the term ahead. Every term, we accumulate a large quantity of lost property which is unnamed and therefore almost impossible to return to its owner. Please ensure that all items of clothing and Games kit are clearly named, even checking occasionally during the term, to see if name tags have come off or the writing has become too faded to read. All items of clothing will be checked at the start of the year and we will let you know via email if anything needs to be labelled. All valuables should be handed to the teacher in charge of the lesson. If your son is unable to do Games or PE, please contact his Form Tutor via email. 5

Saturday Commitments There are no lessons on Saturdays. In the Junior School very few school sporting activities take place on Saturdays. However, the College is justly proud of its outstanding record of sporting activities and, should your son be selected for a Saturday fixture, we ask for your co-operation in ensuring he attends. Occasionally there are other events on Saturdays. All of the boys in Years 5 and 6 and some Year 4s are asked to perform duties for the Junior School such as being tour guides at Open Morning. The event takes place on a Saturday in the Michaelmas term and the boys’ assistance is always appreciated. The boys gain invaluable experience in showing prospective parents around the school and consider it an honour to represent the College. In addition there may also be a play rehearsal on the Saturday before the Year 6 production.

Clubs The Junior School offers a rich and varied programme of co-curricular clubs and activities. These take place at lunchtimes and after school. Boys are encouraged to attend at least two clubs a week and attendance at all sessions is important so that all boys derive the maximum benefit from these activities. We do our very best to accommodate each boy’s request but on occasion, if a club is heavily oversubscribed, he may have to wait until later in the year or make an alternative choice. Most clubs are led by members of the Junior School teaching staff and are free of charge. However, clubs taught by external coaches incur an additional cost. In addition, we do provide a Homework Club (4-5pm) and an After School Care Club (5-6pm) each day and there are additional charges for these too. Mr Ed Wickstead has the responsibility for organising the clubs’ programme and any queries concerning arrangements for clubs should be directed to him.

Houses The College operates a Day House system which develops co-curricular involvement, establishes healthy competition and extends friendships. There are eight Houses, all named after eminent figures who were friends or acquaintances of our Founder, Edward Alleyn. Each term there are a number of House competitions and all boys are encouraged to participate. The competitions consist of a mixture of sporting and non-sporting activities and are an excellent way of children learning to work for their House and not just for themselves. The Junior School House Cup is awarded at the end of the year. House Housemaster Drake (Amber) Miss E Cosford Grenville (Green/white) Mr R Oubridge Howard (Light blue) Mrs C Duncan and Mrs H Bishop Jonson (Purple) Mr B Davies Marlow (Black/white) Miss S Rowe Raleigh (Red/white) Mr T Goodrich Sidney (Red) Mr P Wadhams Spenser (Royal Blue/white) Mrs F Southern

Outings and Educational There is a rich and varied programme of school trips and visits to support Visits learning and give the boys a range of stimulating experiences. We also invite external agencies into school to provide talks and workshops and these take place throughout the school year. Parents will be sent a letter outlining the details of the visit well in advance. Residential visits take place in the Summer term for Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 and the charge for these visits is included in the school fees. There is also an annual Junior School ski trip during the first week of the Easter holidays; this exciting trip is open to boys in Years 4, 5 and 6. Well before any of these trips take place there will be an information meeting for parents. 6

Homework All boys are expected to complete homework on a daily basis. This includes: • 30-60 minutes of written homework, depending on age • Reading • Learning weekly spellings Further details for each Year Group are included in the curriculum booklet. A homework timetable will be sent home to you at the beginning of the Michaelmas Term, via the Prep Diary, with the breakdown of the subjects for each day.

Founder’s Day

Each year, the College celebrates the life and spirit of Edward Alleyn, who founded the original College of God’s Gift in 1619. Founder’s Day usually falls on the last Saturday of the Summer Term and all staff and boys are expected to attend on the day and to participate in some event or activity.

Junior School Speech Day takes place the day before Founder’s Day.

Junior School activities during the day include a wide range of charity fundraising initiatives and a great exhibition of the Year 6 boys’ artwork.

The day ends with a spectacular outdoor concert and firework display, which takes place on the Front Lawns at 8.00pm.

7 Dulwich College Music Department

Individual Music Tuition The following instruments are taught: piano, jazz piano, organ, harpsichord, violin, viola, cello, double-bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, saxophone, trombone, tuba, euphonium, percussion and guitar (classical, electric and bass). Individual singing lessons, Alexander Technique, music production/composition and conducting lessons are also available. Theory lessons may be individual orshared. In the latter case the cost will be pro rata.

The fee for individual tuition on any of the above instruments is £201.30 (from September 2017) for 10 weekly lessons of 30 minutes. Music fees are charged in advance by the visiting music teacher who will send parents a contract and termly invoice.

Individual music lessons are normally given during school hours, with boys missing academic subjects on a rotational basis. Boys in Year 11 and the Sixth Form are not allowed to miss any of their examination subjects. Teachers are under no obligation to make up lessons missed through pupils’ absence.

A whole term’s (or 10 lessons) notice in writing must be given to the Director of Music if a pupil wishes to withdraw from individual tuition, otherwise payment of the fees for the next term will be required.

Music Lesson Application Forms are available from the Music Department Office and can also be downloaded from MyDulwich. These should be completed and returned to the Music Department as soon as possible.

An attendance record card is issued to each pupil and weekly timetables are posted on the music notice boards.

Written progress reports are sent to parents twice yearly. A boy who is not making satisfactory progress may be advised to discontinue lessons.

Pupils are encouraged to prepare for the examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music or Trinity - the examinations being held towards the end of each term (Trinity in the Michaelmas and Summer Term only). The College will provide an official accompanist who will arrange a single rehearsal before the exam. Additional rehearsals if required should be negotiated with the Head of Keyboard and a standard fee will be charged.

All boys who play an orchestral instrument are strongly encouraged to join one of the College orchestras or ensembles. Singers are encouraged to join one or more of the Choral ensembles. Opportunities for classical, jazz and pop music are all available.

Although the College has a number of wind and stringed instruments available for hire, it is obviously much to the advantage of the pupil that he should obtain his own instrument as quickly as possible. The period of hiring is normally limited to one year, and parents are required to indemnify the College against damage to or loss of instruments on hire. The hire charge is £50 per term, including the holidays. Parents are strongly advised to include their own musical instruments in the ‘All Risks’ section of their household contents policy. Secure rooms are provided in the Music School for instrument storage and boys should use these at all times.

All enquires about music lessons should be made to the Music Office 020 8299 9258 or email: [email protected].

8 Further Information for Parents and Pupils

Library Mrs Forbes is our Junior School Librarian. She works closely with the Junior School staff in resourcing, planning and delivering the curriculum. The Junior School Library has a stock of 8000 books, DVDs and audio books and is open from 8.30am until 4pm during term time. Boys may also use the Library at lunchtime and at break times. The Junior School Library supports the effective learning of pupils by providing opportunities for research, assisting in the development of information handling skills and promoting a reading culture throughout the school. The Library has networked computers for pupils, all with internet access and the use of a laser printer. The non-fiction stock is organised using a simplified version of the Dewey Classification System and fiction is organised alphabetically by author.

Boys may borrow three items at a time, books for three weeks and DVDs and CDs for one week. Items may be renewed unless reserved by another pupil. Reminders are sent once an item is overdue. Fines are not charged, but boys are expected to return resources promptly. If items are permanently lost, you will be charged for their replacement.

Security and Safety The gates, pedestrian and vehicular, leading on to Hunts Slip Road, are closed all day. All visitors should use the buzzer and the pedestrian gate will be opened from inside by the Site Officers. On the rare occasion that there is no response you are advised to use the main entrance on Dulwich Common. Junior School boys are all told that they are not allowed to open the gate to anyone – even if they know the adult concerned. We are sure that you will appreciate our reasons for this important rule.

Mobile Phones We discourage boys from bringing mobile phones or e-readers to school as we do not want Junior School boys to have the anxiety of looking after their personal devices and we want to eliminate the distraction that phones can cause during the school day. However, if you decide you would like your son to bring a mobile phone or e-reader to school because he travels independently to school (by coach, walking or cycling for instance) then it must be signed into the school office first thing in the morning and checked out at the end of the school day.

Money Boys should not bring money to school except on charity days.

Snacks Boys in the Junior School have a busy day and we recommend that they bring a drink and a healthy snack for morning break. Milk is available for those who want it. Please ensure your sons do not bring sweets, fizzy drinks or anything containing nuts into school. There is a fantastic choice of hot and cold, well- balanced meals at lunch time, so no boy should need to supplement this with sugary snacks. Junior School boys are not allowed to go to Ned’s Cabin to buy sweets or use the vending machines at any time.

School Meals For Junior School boys, lunch is included in the College fees. Teachers sit with the boys at lunch time, helping them make healthy meal choices and making sure their table manners are appropriate.

Medical care If a boy feels poorly, he should tell his teacher in the first instance who will then send him to either Mrs Holmes or Mrs Maudsley in the office. Both are trained first aiders and will make a decision about whether he should go to the Medical Centre. The Medical Centre also deals with any injuries or accidents.

9

The Medical Centre The Medical Centre aims to provide a comprehensive, holistic and professional health service to the day pupils, boarding community, teachers and visitors with Dulwich College. It is staffed by highly qualified nurses, and visiting doctors from the local Rosendale Practice, who strive to provide a service which encompasses both medical and emotional support.

The medical staff predominantly provide treatment for minor conditions, accidents and chronic medical conditions such as asthma, allergies and diabetes. Routine services they are able to provide includes wound care, removal of sutures and administering medication with the consent of parents. In the case of an accident, if needed, staff arrange the transfer to the local A&E or minor injuries unit. Depending on the severity of the injuries the parents or guardians will be contacted prior to any transfer. All pupils are cared for in the strictest confidence.

A confidential counselling service is offered to pupils, staff and parents from Monday- Wednesday, 08:00-16:00. Pupils, staff and parents may access this service through the Medical Centre or directly via email [email protected].

If at any time you wish to discuss the health needs of your son, please do not hesitate to contact the Medical Centre (on 020 8299 9269) and speak to one of the nursing staff. If your son uses an epipen or an inhaler, they must be provided at the start of the School Year.

The College Online MyDulwich is the College’s intranet portal and online learning environment. The front page has important notices from teachers and other staff. It publishes a constantly changing record of achievements by boys at all levels, and is a key place for promoting forthcoming talks and meetings. It also includes the up to date calendar of daily events.

All of MyDulwich can be accessed from home; instructions on how to do so are at www.dulwich.org.uk.

The Junior School has its own website at www.dulwich.org.uk/juniorschool. This contains much vital information including weekly notices and key documents and deadlines.

Boys are reminded that use of the College computers and network is governed by an Acceptable Use Policy. Acceptance of this is given every time you log on. The full policy is online at www.dulwich.org.uk/junior-school/policies.

Parents’ Cars For safety reasons, parents are not allowed to drive their cars into the College grounds at the Junior School end of the campus. Tollgate Drive, opposite the entrance, is a private road and parents are asked not to park there.

Pupils’ Bicycles If cycling to or from the College, your son must wear a safety helmet and a reflective outer garment, even when cycling within College grounds. He may not cycle for recreational purposes within College grounds.

Boys must register their bicycle with the Junior School Receptionist. Your son will then be given a code so that he can leave his bicycle securely padlocked in the designated area. He will need the frame number of his cycle, which you should make a note of in case of loss or damage. 10

Coach Service Parents who wish their sons to travel to the College by coach are asked to contact the Foundation Schools’ Transport Office as soon as possible. The telephone number is: 020 8299 9262. It may not be possible to accommodate late applications.

Travel and pick up Boys should always behave well and dress smartly when travelling to and from arrangements school. They must leave school either in full school uniform on in a school tracksuit. Please ensure he has a tracksuit with him for all fixtures and if he intends to go home in sports kit. At the end of the school day boys are dismissed in front of the Junior School. Any boys who are not collected by 4:00pm will be taken to the patball courts where they gather before the start of clubs at 4:10pm. Any boy not collected by 4:10pm will be taken to Homework Club and the charge for this service will be applied. At the end of clubs, boys will also be dismissed at the main entrance to the Junior School. Any boy not collected by 5:10pm will be taken to After School Care and a charge for this service will be levied. If parents of any Junior School boys wish them to go home unaccompanied or meet parents at an alternative location we must have an email to this effect. In the interest of traffic, sustainable travel and developing boys’ independence we would encourage this, especially in Years 5 and 6.

In the morning, boys will be supervised outside from 8:00am until the bell rings at 8:25am. Parents may supervise their sons in the playground if they arrive before this time. Access to the College premises before 8:00am may not be allowed in the case of adverse weather conditions. On days when the boys have PE or swimming before break the boys should come to school in their tracsuits and kit.

Temporary absence Should parents plan to be away from home during term time, it is important to let of parents us know what arrangements have been made so that we can allay any concerns the boy may have.

School fees From September 2018 Tuition fee: £6,816 per term Fees must be paid in one of the following ways: (a) By Direct Debit in full at the beginning of each term or (b) By Direct Debit in three equal monthly instalments during each term or (c) By certain Credit/Debit Cards in full at the beginning of each term.

The College reserves the right to suspend pupils whose fees are not paid (or for whom no Direct Debit or Credit/Debit Card arrangement has been made). The fee for a boy attending the College for any part of a term must be paid for the whole of that term.

Personal Accident Parents will be pleased to know that under special arrangements with the College’s Insurance insurers, all boys are automatically included in both a Personal Accident Insurance Scheme and a Fees Refund Scheme. The latter, under certain circumstances, provides a refund of fees in the event of absence through illness, etc. Full details of both these schemes will be supplied with the first fee account, or are available earlier on request to the Fees Administrator. There is no additional charge for membership of these schemes.

Insurance of Parents should note that the Governors cannot accept liability for boys’ personal Personal Property property while at the College. Householders’ personal insurance policies are usually extendable to cover property in a school or ‘second residence’.

Parents are therefore asked to check that their own policy gives adequate cover for whatever possessions their son(s) may have at the College at any time. 11

12 The Nearly New Shop

The Friends of Dulwich College Nearly New Shop (NNS), is the perfect place to find all kinds of uniform basics, from shoes and trainers to blazers, trousers and current sports kit. The NNS is a proper shop, with the stock displayed on rails, and first time visitors are often surprised at how easy it is to browse and find a bargain.

The NNS serves a dual purpose for DUCKS and College parents. Firstly and most importantly, is a way to BUY spare items of uniform and kit at a reasonable price on the 2 or 3 times a month the shop is open. Secondly, it offers a chance to RECYCLE those outgrown uniform items which clutter up your cupboards. Items can be donated, or we can sell them for you on a 50/50 basis. Otherwise, stock is made up of unnamed lost property items which remain unclaimed after four weeks.

All money transactions are handled in the Commissariat by their staff. This enables you to purchase NNS items by credit or debit card, cash or cheque. Everything in the NNS is sold “as seen”.

Further information can be found on the Dulwich College Website (search for Nearly New Shop).

The FDC has two key objectives: to bring the College Community together through a number of social and fundraising events, to benefit current and future Alleynians and local charities.

The FDC organises various social events throughout the year including the International Evening in September, the Junior and Senior School Quiz nights in February and March, Boy/s socials and many informal parent get-togethers. We also run the College Nearly New Shop and two major fundraising events including the Dulwich College Christmas Fair held at the end of November, and typically a grand Summer event in May. The majority of our fundraising supports projects designed to enhance the curriculum and further the opportunities available for our boys, now and in the future. The FDC supports the Grant System and many other initiatives, which enhance the boys’ experience and help provide huge opportunities and benefits for many.

Our activities and events are designed to enable those who want to help out, and get involved. We are always looking for volunteers, and there are many different ways you can get involved. You might wish to join the Committee, be a Class Rep or Year Coordinator, be involved in the organisation of events or to just spend a few hours helping out. Every little bit helps! Please join us at the new Junior School parents’ welcome coffee morning, Monday 3rd September, 8.30-10.00am in the Salle, to meet other parents and hear more about the FDC.

To find out more, or get in touch, please visit the “College Life” section of the main www.dulwich.org.uk website and click on “Friends of Dulwich College”, or email us at [email protected]. We look forward to getting to know you.

Contact details If you are considering getting involved with the FDC, then we would love to hear from you.

Term dates are already published (see below) and are also available on the website. Please make a careful note of these dates, so that you will not need to ask for permission for your son to be absent during term time.
