The Bible became the center of my life as the Holy Spirit immersed my corrupt mind into God’s truth. The more that I studied, the more I wanted to tell others what I was discovering in the Bible. I got with others who could help give me a better understanding of the Scriptures. We would sometimes study the Bible all night, literally until the sun would come up the next day. I conducted Bible studies at lunch on the construction site where I was working. My wife, Diane and I had people into our home for weekly Bible studies. Little did we know that God was setting the course for the rest of our lives. I can’t remember any time during the last twenty nine years that we were not making disciples for Jesus in a relational way. We have made disciples of hundreds of people who still walk with God today, and unfortunately many who do not. In my zeal to make disciples, I wanted to find a way to better communicate the Scriptures. I had to teach others the things that God was teaching me in a consistent way. In or around 1986 the Lord opened my understanding to the “elementary principles of the doctrines of Christ”, found in Hebrews 6:1-3, where the theme for this book came from: “1 Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this we will do if God permits.” The six doctrines of Christ became the skeletal outline of everything that I taught from then on. I wrote study after study that seemed to dovetail with one another, until finally it became a flowing document. Just last year in 2009 I felt compelled to write this in book form so that I could be a good steward of this revelation. Also, I wanted IX others to be able to consistently make disciples that are grounded in the doctrines of Christ. Our generation is one that is grossly illiterate when it comes to the Word of God. It seems that ministers are more under the authority of church growth principles than the Bible. Even sadder, most church folks are under the authority of their own opinions based loosely on a few catch phrases. Truly we are in a famine for the Word of God, the spiritually emaciated are starving in the churches, being fed a steady diet of sugar coated humanism that cannot satisfy their souls. However, I am encouraged in these days. I have noticed that as we dispel the popular myths that float around churches that the people are responding well to truth. Go figure! The Truthstill sets people free. It is my sincere prayer that all who read this book will have the “eyes of their understanding enlightened”, and this volume could be a catalyst for revival in all who would become disciples of Jesus. I will close this foreword and begin our lessons on the Doctrines of Christ with this reading from II John 7-10, “7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8 Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward. 9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.” May the content of this book recover many who have been deceived to believe they are going to heaven while still living in their transgressions. I “bring to you the Doctrine of Christ”, I pray that you will receive this word into your house and receive your full reward. Many Blessings, Teryl Hebert X Chapter 1: IntroduCtIon Hebrews 5:12-14; 6:1-3, “12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
