The demand for portable literature in the sixteenth century required a new approach to design; how does one !t more words in less pages? Printers tried smaller and smaller type, typefaces with larger x-heights, and narrower type. Like the !rst Aldine italics, Granjon’s style changed to create more upright and narrow italics.

The generous width, ascenders and of the high Renaissance typefaces gave way in the ")th century to a narrower and more compact design. With shorter ascenders and descenders in proportions the so called ‘Dutch’ style !tted closer to those of a blackletter design. Working for the main type foundries of Holland, his typefaces have a de!ned sharpness and angularity not seen in his contemporaries

Marian !&&* Paul Barnes (born !"#$) is a graphic designer specializing in Marian !&&* Italic the %elds of lettering, typography, type design and publica- Marian !&)& tion design. In the early !""$s he worked for Roger Black in Marian !&)& Italic New York where he was involved in redesigns of Newsweek, Marian !&#! US and British Esquire and Foreign A!airs. During this Marian !&#! Italic time he art directed Esquire Gentleman and U&lc He later Marian !)-$ returned to America to be art director of the music magazine Marian !)-$ Italic Spin. Marian !#*$ Since !""& he has lived and worked in London. He has Marian !#*$ Italic formed a long term collaboration with Peter Saville, which Marian !#*( has resulted in such diverse work as identities for Given- Marian !#*( Italic chy, ‘Original Modern’ for Manchester and numerous music Marian !#&& based projects, such as Gay Dad, New Order, Joy Division Marian !#&& Italic and Electronic. Independently he has created identities for Marian !-$$ luxury Italian shoe manufacturer, Gianvito Rossi and German Marian !-$$ Italic publisher, Schirmer Graf. Barnes has also been an advisor Marian !-!( and consultant on numerous publications, notably The Marian !-!( Italic Sunday Times Magazine, The Guardian and The Observer Marian Black Newspapers, GQ, Wallpaper* , Harper’s Bazaar and frieze. He has designed many books for publishers all over Europe including, Schirmer Mosel, Oxford University Press, the Tate SUPPORTED LANGUAGES and the iconic Schirmer Graf series. His interest in the modern and vernacular is encom- Afrikaans, Albanian, Asturian, Basque, Breton, Bosnian, passed in his type design ranging from the contemporary Catalan, Cornish, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, such as for Björk, through to the extensive traditional British Esperanto, Estonian, Faroese, Finnish, French, Galician, modern, Brunel as seen in Condé Nast Portfolio. Whilst German, Greenlandic, Guarani, Hawaiian, Hungarian, consultant to The Guardian he designed Guardian E'ptian Ibo, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish, Gaelic, Italian, Kurdish, with Christian Schwartz. Following the redesign of The Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Livonian, Malagasy, Maltese, Guardian, as part of the team headed by Mark Porter, Barnes Maori, Moldavian, Norwegian, Occitan, Polish, Portuguese, was awarded the Black Pencil from the D&AD. They were also Romanian, Romansch, Saami, Samoan, Scots, Scottish nominated for the Design Museum ‘Designer of the Year’. In Gaelic, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish (Castillian), Swahili, September ($$), with Schwartz he was named one of the *$ Swedish, Tagalog, Turkish, Walloon, Welsh, Wolof most in+uential designers under *$ in Wallpaper*.
