Success story - P.Saravanan ORGANIC CUCURBITACEOUS VEGETABLE CULTIVATION Farmer photo Problem/ challenge addressed Th.P.Saravanan started Groundnut cultivation in one acre under rainfed and Tapioca under drip as monocropping in an area of one acre during 2006. He has harvested 25 bags of groundnut & sold @ Rs.2500/bag and got a net profit of Rs.38010/- In tapioca, he obtained 131 bags of tuber yield & sold @ Rs.404/bag and got a net profit of Rs.41,501/-Then he slowly converted the entire farm in full organic mode. That time he did not know the quantity of organic fertilizer application, cultivation of vegetables in fully organic mode with available resources and also pest and disease control by organic Th.P.Saravanan way. By knowing the importance and value of organic agriculture S/o. Th.K.Periyasamy and his bad experiences in pesticide usage towards control of pests Muthuvel thottam, in the crops, he slowly converts the farming practices in organic way. Then he extended the area of cultivation in Farming Experience: 35 turmeric up to 1 acre in 2011. years He applied 18 tonnes of FYM, 1.25 tonnes of vermicompost Crops grown: as basal & each 100 kg of Neem cake, Pongamia cake, Castor Cucurbitaceous vegetables: 1 cake, Illuppai cake and 70 kg of Groundnut cake in 2 split acre doses viz., basal as well as top dressing at 5 months after Turmeric:1.5 acre planting. Groundnut:1 acre In turmeric, he obtained 3 tonnes of dried rhizome/acre & Fodder: 1 acre sold @ Rs.10,000/Quintal. He spent Rs.98,000/acre as expenditure & got the net profit of Rs.136000/acre in 10 Livestock: months. Desibird – 20 Nos In 2015, he applied organic certification for his farm. Dairy cow – 5 animals Then he started to cultivate cucurbitaceous vegetables viz., Goat – 10 Nos Bitter gourd, Ribbed gourd and Snake gourd in an area of 1.5 Duck – 5 Nos acres. He applied diluted solution containing Castor cake 20 kg, Recognitions Neem cake 6 kg and Groundnut cake 5 kg, which was soaked Best Farmer Award received in water for 5 days. Emayavaramban1 Associate Professor, Department of Geography, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India.1 ABSTRACT: The main objective of this study is to identify an appropriate land suitable for cultivation in a scientific land evaluation manner. This kind of analysis gives a proper idea for the farmers to do the land management practices and helps to increase land productivity. A GIS based multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) is used to achieve this objective to assess the suitable area for the cultivation of crops. Overlay analysis has generally taken the form of weighted overlay depending on our perspective. The main objective of weighted overlay is to calculate a new set of values for the complete coverage based on a combination of input values. This operation processes the complete data sets, so boundaries from all inputs layers will be retained. The study area taken for this study is Rasipuram block of Namakkal District. The District lies in the interior part of Tamil Nadu. The layer used in decision making system is soil parameters such as texture, production potential and climatic parameters such as rainfall, physical parameters such as drainage density, slope and geomorphology. All these layers are ranked properly based on the expert advice and literature then suitable weights are assigned to do the overlay analysis method to delineate suitability classes.
