Site Sanitation Systems in Mining Area, Karnataka, India
Trends and Sustainability of Groundwater in Highly Stressed Aquifers (Proc. of Symposium JS.2 at 193 the Joint IAHS & IAH Convention, Hyderabad, India, September 2009). IAHS Publ. 329, 2009. Integrated assessment of risk for contaminated sites due to on- site sanitation systems in mining area, Karnataka, India H. K. RAMARAJU University Visveswaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), Jnanabharathi Campus, Bangalore University, Bangalore-560056, Karnataka, India [email protected] Abstract The sanitation coverage in rural households of India is very low. A field study was carried out in the Kolar Gold Field mining residential area. The residents of the study area depend on bore wells and resort to septic tanks for disposal of domestic waste. The main objective of this study is to assess the impact of septic tanks/low cost sanitation systems on groundwater and soil environment in the unsaturated zones of the soil. The hydraulic conductivity of the soil in the study area varied from 0.13 to 0.31 m day-1. Higher concentration of nitrates and chlorides in well waters show that groundwater is getting contaminated with on-site sanitation effluents. Higher concentrations of major metals, salts and gases were also observed because the geology of the particular area has influence on the quality of water. Based on the investigations, appropriate technological options are proposed. Key words bacteriological; hydrogeological; infiltration; nitrification; onsite sanitation systems; unsaturated zones; weathered rock INTRODUCTION Water for human consumption is perhaps becoming more vulnerable due to various strains on its qualitative and quantitative counts. Different types of pollution are making the issue more complicated and costly for mitigation. -

Srirangam – Heaven on Earth
Srirangam – Heaven on Earth A Guide to Heaven – The past and present of Srirangam Pradeep Chakravarthy 3/1/2010 For the Tag Heritage Lecture Series 1 ARCHIVAL PICTURES IN THE PRESENTATION © COLLEGE OF ARTS, OTHER IMAGES © THE AUTHOR 2 Narada! How can I speak of the greatness of Srirangam? Fourteen divine years are not enough for me to say and for you to listen Yama’s predicament is worse than mine! He has no kingdom to rule over! All mortals go to Srirangam and have their sins expiated And the devas? They too go to Srirangam to be born as mortals! Shiva to Narada in the Sriranga Mahatmaya Introduction Great civilizations have been created and sustained around river systems across the world. India is no exception and in the Tamil country amongst the most famous rivers, Kaveri (among the seven sacred rivers of India) has been the source of wealth for several dynasties that rose and fell along her banks. Affectionately called Ponni, alluding to Pon being gold, the Kaveri river flows in Tamil Nadu for approx. 445 Kilometers out of its 765 Kilometers. Ancient poets have extolled her beauty and compared her to a woman who wears many fine jewels. If these jewels are the prosperous settlements on her banks, the island of Srirangam 500 acres and 13 kilometers long and 7 kilometers at its widest must be her crest jewel. Everything about Srirangam is massive – it is at 156 acres (perimeter of 10,710 feet) the largest Hindu temple complex in worship after Angkor which is now a Buddhist temple. -
A GIS Based Study on Land Evaluation in Rasipuram Block, Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu
ISSN(Online) : 2319-8753 ISSN (Print) : 2347-6710 International Journal of Innovative Research in Science, Engineering and Technology (An ISO 3297: 2007 Certified Organization) Vol. 5, Issue 9, September 2016 A GIS Based Study on Land Evaluation in Rasipuram Block, Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu V. Emayavaramban1 Associate Professor, Department of Geography, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India.1 ABSTRACT: The main objective of this study is to identify an appropriate land suitable for cultivation in a scientific land evaluation manner. This kind of analysis gives a proper idea for the farmers to do the land management practices and helps to increase land productivity. A GIS based multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) is used to achieve this objective to assess the suitable area for the cultivation of crops. Overlay analysis has generally taken the form of weighted overlay depending on our perspective. The main objective of weighted overlay is to calculate a new set of values for the complete coverage based on a combination of input values. This operation processes the complete data sets, so boundaries from all inputs layers will be retained. The study area taken for this study is Rasipuram block of Namakkal District. The District lies in the interior part of Tamil Nadu. The layer used in decision making system is soil parameters such as texture, production potential and climatic parameters such as rainfall, physical parameters such as drainage density, slope and geomorphology. All these layers are ranked properly based on the expert advice and literature then suitable weights are assigned to do the overlay analysis method to delineate suitability classes. -
