Catalog Description An examination of theological issues related to indigenous church leadership development from a Pentecostal perspective with special attention to spiritual formation, moral issues and social/organizational structures in a missional context. Course Prerequisites There are no prerequisites. Course Purpose To help students discover God’s call and direction and experience Spirit empowerment as missional leaders grounded in biblical missiology. This class will use Course Commons for course materials, announcements, and assignments. Participation Students will be expected to regularly contribute to the class, collaborate with one another, and to “learn by doing.” Attendance A student is only allowed to be absent up to 2 weeks of classes a semester (or 1 day of a module). It is presupposed that any such absence would be due to extenuating circumstances. However, except for a serious medical emergency, if more than allowed absences take place, it is an automatic withdrawal for that class. If a student is more than 15 minutes tardy for a class, it will be counted as an absence. Attendance and class participation comprise 10% of your overall grade. Assignments 1. Reading Assignments: Students must read the assigned textbooks according to the class schedule. A Canvas online open book “Quiz” must be completed for each text and for a missionary biography (see course addendum two for observations and recommendations). Reading assignments comprise 40% of your overall grade. 2. Reflection Cycle: Utilizing the “Model for Ministry Reflection” examine a ministry leadership event in your own life and articulate a contextual theology which addresses the event (i.e. articulate the “mind of Christ” for the ministry event). (7-10 pp.). This reflection will be collected via an online assignment in Course Commons. The Reflection Cycle assignment comprises 25% of your overall grade. Due April 3. Comprehensive Exam: Based on class notes and the assigned reading, articulate a Pentecostal theology of leadership development which includes an examination of the spiritual and corporate disciplines, organizational structures, the indigenous church, call and empowerment, the role of the local church and Pentecostal distinctives, include a personal reflection on your own call, empowerment and leadership experience- past, present and future. (7-10 pp.) .” Research paper assignment comprises 40% of your overall grade. Due April 3.     Praying His Word PRAY IN HIS WILL ACCORDING TO HIS WORD This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. (1 John 5:14-note,1 John 5:15-note) The best resource to guide prayer according to His will is the Word of God which reveals the will of God. Listed below are resources that first focus on the Scriptures so that you might grow with respect to salvation and in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and thereby may confidently enter the Holy place by the blood of Jesus, drawing near to the Throne of Grace with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith. Torrey's main Topic on "Prayer" multiple subtopics covering over 150 Scriptures (remember to read each text in its context to maximize proper interpretation and fruitful application). As a suggestion you might consider going through these Scriptures devotionally each morning and keep a diary of observations on the text.     A Short Biography Samuel Zwemer 1867‐1952 Apostle to Islam In the judgement of the great missionary historian K. S. Latourette, “No one through all the centuries of Christian missions to ‘neighbours’ has deserved the title ‘Apostle to Islam’ more than Zwemer.” In the first half of the 20th century Zwemer was widely acknowledged as the world’s foremost authority in all matters relating to Christian witness to Islam. His Family Samuel Marinus Zwemer was born to Dutch immigrant parents in Kriesland, Michigan on April 12, 1867. Samuel’s father was a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church and he was the thirteenth of fifteen children! Theirs was a strong Christian family with a great protestant tradition. The Zwemers were originally French Huguenots who had fled to Holland. Four of the five brothers were involved in fulltime ministry either as ministers or as missionaries. One sister, Nellie, spent 40 years as a missionary in Amoy, China. When Samuel told his mother he believed God was calling him to the mission field, she told him she had dedicated him to the Lord’s service and placed him in his cradle with the prayer that he might grow up to be a missionary. In the Zwemer household there was Bible reading and prayer at every meal. Each year the family read through the whole Bible together. With such a heritage it is no surprise that Samuel felt he had accepted Jesus as his Lord as far back in his boyhood as he could remember. His Call Samuel went to Hope College in Michigan.
