Abstract Samuel Zwemer (1867-1952), known as ‘Apostle to Islam’, was an influential figure in Christian mission to Muslims. He influenced subsequent generation of missionaries to the Muslim world. This thesis will look at his view of Muhammad, the Quran and Islamic reformers. He believed that moving away from Islam implied progress and moving toward Islam equated regress. He used two Muslim reformers; ibn Abd al-Wahhab and Ahmed Khan to argue his point. Zwemer viewed Khan’s engagement with the Christian scripture as a positive case when Muslims would give importance to the Christian scripture. In turn he believed that al-Wahhab’s notion of returning to the Quran and example of Muhammad would have negative outcome for the Muslim world. Contrary to the dominant paradigm of his time that radical Islam was in a dying phase, Zwemer warned the church of the lingering danger of fundamentalist Islam. By exposing readers in his writings to the possible sources of the Quran (e.g. collections of rabbinic Judaism, heretical Christian) and by questioning the prophethood of Muhammad, Zwemer contested the divine origins of Islam. He viewed Islam as a challenge and suggested framework for effective Muslim evangelism. Zwemer’s work is still relevant today for Muslims because it may encourage them to be more self-reflective, and for Christians because they may consider Zwemer’s approach and arguments. 2 Table of Contents 1.     THE LEGACY OF HENRY MARTYN TO THE STUDY OF INDIA'S MUSLIMS AND ISLAM IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Avril A. Powell University of Lincoln (SOAS) INTRODUCTION: A biography of Henry Martyn, published in 1892, by George Smith, a retired Bengal civil servant, carried two sub-titles: the first, 'saint and scholar', the second, the 'first modern missionary to the Mohammedans. [1]In an earlier lecture we have heard about the forming, initially in Cambridge, of a reputation for spirituality that partly explains the attribution of 'saintliness' to Martyn: my brief, on the other hand, is to explore the background to Smith's second attribution: the late Victorian perception of him as the 'first modern missionary' to Muslims. I intend to concentrate on the first hundred years since his ordination, dividing my paper between, first, Martyn's relations with Muslims in India and Persia, especially his efforts both to understand Islam and to prepare for the conversion of Muslims, and, second, the scholarship of those evangelicals who continued his efforts to turn Indian Muslims towards Christianity. Among the latter I shall be concerned especially with an important, but neglected figure, Sir William Muir, author of The Life of Mahomet, and The Caliphate:ite Rise, Decline and Fall, and of several other histories of Islam, and of evangelical tracts directed to Muslim readers. I will finish with a brief discussion of conversion from Islam to Christianity among the Muslim circles influenced by Martyn and Muir. But before beginning I would like to mention the work of those responsible for the Henry Martyn Centre at Westminster College in recently collecting together and listing some widely scattered correspondence concerning Henry Martyn.

Nineveh was the largest city in the world at that time. - Jonah’s call was different because God told him to go to Nineveh to preach against its wickedness (1:1-2). It is the only case in which God called a prophet to a foreign nation to deliver God’s message against them.

Smith 2 Introduction Islam is a centuries-old religion, and Muslims have been a part of Western society for nearly as long, and yet despite this, until relatively recently many have not felt the need to understand this religion and its teachings. Now it is evident that an understanding of Islam is vital not only for people to be able to relate to the growing number of Muslims in the West, but also for Christians to be able to effectively reach out both in ministry and in witness to Islam’s adherents. The first thing that needs to be understood is that Islam is not a religion based upon a person. While Mohammad is greatly revered among orthodox Muslims, and while he is considered to be a prophet chosen by Allāh to be an instrument of revelation, his role is simply that of revealer. He is an apostle, a messenger, a mortal man with a special commission. Essentially, Islam is about submission to Allāh and His commands as He has revealed Himself in the Qur’ān, the Islamic scriptures. Islamic law, society, and culture are founded upon the Qur’ān and its principles as elucidated by Mohammad and his followers. If one is, therefore, to gain an understanding of this religion and its adherents, it is vital that one understands the context and message of its scripture. The purpose of this paper is to provide the reader with a grasp of the history, structure, and content of the Qur’ān. While the author is coming from a Christian perspective, the intent of this work is not one of Christian apologetic.

Abstract In this thesis I shall look at the narratives of three women in 1 and 2 Samuel: Michal, Bathsheba and Tamar. I will argue how these women each endure incredible experiences of suffering that are brought about primarily through the actions of both King David and the narrator. These women suffer at the hands of the narrator due to the narratives neglect in recording their experiences in any detail in the text. Instead, it will be my argument that these women are simply used as a means of continuing and explaining the events that happen in the plot of 1 and 2 Samuel and the ‘David story’. It will be my aim then to attempt to bring these women’s experiences to the forefront of the text and uncover their lost voices.
