This article is an open access publication Abstract The development of large agglomerations is one of the most important phenomena in later Eurasian prehistory. In west-central temperate Europe, the origins of urbanism have long been associated with the oppida of the second to first centuries BC. However, large-scale excavations and surveys carried out over the last two decades have fundamentally modified the traditional picture of early centralization processes. New results indicate that the first urban centres north of the Alps developed over time between the end of the seventh and the fifth century BC in an area stretching from Bohemia to southern Germany and Central France. Sites such as the Heuneburg, Za´vist, Mont Lassois and Bourges produce evidence of a process of differentiation and hierarchization in the pattern of settlement that was concurrently an expression of, and a catalyst for, increasing social inequality. Although contacts with the Mediterranean world would certainly have played a role in such processes, endogenous factors were primarily responsible for the development of these early Central European agglom- erations. This paper summarizes recent fieldwork results, showing the heterogeneity and diversity of Early Iron Age central places and outlining their diachronic devel- opment. The fragility and ephemeral character of these centres of power and their territories is highlighted. -

Received: 15 August 2020; Accepted: 21 September 2020; Published: 24 September 2020 Abstract: Wood-decay fungi are one of the major threats to the old and valuable trees in Hong Kong and constitute a main conservation and management challenge because they inhabit dead wood as well as living trees. The diversity, abundance, and distribution of wood-decay fungi associated with standing trees and stumps in four different parks of Hong Kong, including Hong Kong Park, Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Garden, Kowloon Park, and Hong Kong Observatory Grounds, were investigated. Around 4430 trees were examined, and 52 fungal samples were obtained from 44 trees. Twenty-eight species were identified from the samples and grouped into twelve families and eight orders. Phellinus noxius, Ganoderma gibbosum, and Auricularia polytricha were the most abundant species and occurred in three of the four parks. -

Symposium Biology and Conservation of the European Wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris) Germany January 21st –23rd 2005 Abstracts Mathias Herrmann, Hof 30, 16247 Parlow, [email protected], Mobil: ++49 +171 9962910 Introduction More than four years after the last meeting of wildcat experts in Nienover, Germany, the NABU (Naturschutzbund Deutschland e.V.) invited for a three day symposium on the conservation of the European wildcat. Since the last meeting the knowledge on wildcat ecology increased a lot due to the field work of several research teams. The aim of the symposium was to bring these teams together to discuss especially questions which could not be solved by one single team due to limited number of observed individuals or special landscape features. The focus was set on the following questions: 1) Hybridization and risk of infection by domestic cat - a threat to wild living populations? 2) Reproductive success, mating behaviour, and life span - what strategy do wildcats have? 3) ffh - reports/ monitoring - which methods should be used? 4) Habitat utilization in different landscapes - species of forest or semi-open landscape? 5) Conservation of the wildcat - which measures are practicable? 6) Migrations - do wildcats have juvenile dispersal? 75 Experts from 9 European countries came to Fischbach within the transboundary Biosphere Reserve "Vosges du Nord - Pfälzerwald" to discuss distribution, ecology and behaviour of this rare species. The weather in Germany in January 2015 Year of record temperatures in 2014 followed by a much too warm January 2015 Offenbach, 30 January 2015 – Frequent weather systems coming in from the west brought varied weather to Germany in January 2015. Everything was included, from spring-like warmth with record temperatures and severe storms to brief wintry interludes. Overall, the month was very mild with high precipitation and little sunshine. This is what the initial analysis by the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) of data from its around 2,000 weather stations shows. Periods of spring-like warmth with record temperatures Following on from the year of 2014, which was the warmest since records began, January 2015, too, saw a positive temperature anomaly. At 2.1 degrees Celsius (°C), the average temperature was 2.6 degrees higher than the international reference value for 1961 to 1990 of -0.5°C. Compared to the warmer period 1981 to 2010, the deviation was +1.7°C. The influence of high pressure prevailed at the start of the month, but brought weather with little cloud cover only to the south. This caused the temperature over the snow cover existing there to fall and give hard frosts. Leutkirch-Herlazhofen in the Württemberg part of the Allgäu recorded the lowest temperature in January with -15.2°C in the night to 1 January. After that, lively westerly winds, which generally brought very mild air masses, prevailed under the influence of low pressure during the first twenty days of the month. On 10 January, the storm depression ‘Felix’ brought spring-like warmth to Germany. -

Root and stem rot Description: External, aboveground symptoms on individual trees are variable and may include suppressed growth, reduced vigour, discoloured or smaller than average-sized foliage, premature leaf shedding, branch dieback, crown thinning, bleeding lesions on the lower stem and root collar, wilting and eventual death of trees. It is common for root and butt rots to remain unnoticed until annual or perennial (conks) fruiting bodies appear on branches or the main trunk. Oxbow lake deposits of the Neris River at the Valakupiai site in Vilnius (Lithuania) have been studied by dif- ferent methods including radiocarbon dating. A timescale was attained for the development of the oxbow lake and climatic events recorded in the sediments. 14C dates obtained for 24 samples cover the range 990–6500 BP (AD 580 to 5600 BC). Medieval human activity was found in the upper part of the sediments. Mollusk fauna found in the basal part of the terrace indicate contact between people living in the Baltic and the Black Sea basins. Mean rates were calculated for erosion of the river and for accumulation during the formation of the first terrace. INTRODUCTION This work presents the results of radiocarbon dating of samples collected at the Valakupiai site, near Vilnius in eastern Lithuania (54°43′58″N, 25°18′33″E; 98.5 m asl) (Figure 1). Special attention was paid to the remnant oxbow lake in the Neris River valley and to the lake-bog deposits filling it. Detailed study of the deposits delivered specific information that enabled paleoecological recon- struction of the site, as well as a description of the geochronological evolution of the oxbow lake and accompanying climatic events.
