Using the concept of the ‘empty signifier,’ this work establishes the shifting identity of James Bond in relation to four thematic icons in the films: the villains, locations, women and technology and their relation to the international political setting over the last 50 years of the films. Bond’s changing identity throughout the series reveals an increasingly globalized society that gives prominence to David Chandler’s theory about ‘empire in denial,’ in which Western states are ever more reluctant to take responsibility for their intervention abroad.     The depiction of scientists in the Bond film franchise Claire Hines The James Bond film franchise began with the release of Dr No (Terence Young, 1962), a film of many notable firsts for the long-running and highly formulaic series. These important firsts include the introduction of Sean Connery as James Bond, the introduction of the criminal organisation SPECTRE and the first major Bond villain, the first of the Bond girls, and a number of key recurring characters. Even though some changes were made to the novel written by Ian Fleming (and published in 1958), the film nevertheless follows the same storyline, where Bond is sent by the British Secret Service to Jamaica and uncovers an evil plot headed by a scientific mastermind. As the first of the Bond films, it is particularly significant that Dr No has a scientist as the very first on-screen Bond villain. Played by Joseph Wiseman, Dr No was based on the literary character from Fleming’s novel, and clearly followed in the tradition of the mad scientist, but also became the prototype for the many Bond villains that followed in the film series (Chapman 2007: 66). According to the stories that circulate about the preparation of Dr No, however, this was almost not the case. In his autobiography Bond producer Albert Broccoli recalls that he and Harry Saltzman rejected an early draft of the screenplay in which the screenwriters had departed from the novel and made the villain a monkey (1998: 158). Broccoli was adamant that the script needed to be rewritten and that Fleming’s Bond villain should be restored to the screenplay (1998: 158).

Article in press] Breaking ground on the long lead-in promotion for Spectre (Mendes 2015), the October 2015 issue of Esquire magazine asked cover star Daniel Craig to reflect on a decade as 007, where “he redefined the once cartoonish secret agent as a symbol of masculinity for the modern age” (Bilmes “Once More With Feeling” 164). The feature constructs Craig’s Bond in a way that deviates from established interpretations of the star-character with a distinct focus on Daniel Craig himself, here defined as much away from Bond as through him. In describing how Craig’s desire for “beer and fags” stems from the actor having to knuckle down and perform promotional duties (ibid), author Alex Bilmes uses a blunt language which mimics Craig’s own brusque reworking of Bond into what has been widely acknowledged as a more brutish and crude character. Craig’s interpretation matches Ian Fleming’s original description of Bond as a “blunt instrument” and the phrase is present in Craig’s first Bond film Casino Royale (Campbell 2006), used by Judy Dench’s M to describe the agent. A thinly-veiled cipher for the British Empire, Bond is beholden to a sense of his former glory, and to the metaphysical assertion of a stable identity, despite the disappearance of its material trappings. In posing the question, What is a hero without a heroic body?, Skyfall at the same time asks: What is an empire after the last colony has been surrendered? This essay considers how, on the one hand, Skyfall 1 Jen Hui Bon Hoa teaches critical theory, cultural studies, and 20th-century French and Anglophone literature at Yonsei University's Underwood International College. (Maryn) Wilkinson Master Film studies Faculty of Humanities University of Amsterdam Abstract James Bond is a well-known character in Hollywood cinema. His character symbolizes a hero to look up to and in this way Bond functions as an example of a ‘perfect’ man. An important aspect of the James Bond films is the character of the ‘Bond girl’. Although the Bond girl is mostly seen as an object of desire and a toy for Bond, this research shows the importance of this character. This research investigates how the female characters in the Bond films influence the characterization of James Bond. Four types of female characters playing a role in the Bond films are analyzed with respect to their interaction with James Bond. These characters are M, Moneypenny, the Bond girl and the Villain girl. Each role is analyzed individually through film analysis. It will become clear which role these women play in the constellation of Bond’s character. This research investigates how the character of Bond has changed through the relationship with different female characters. This research also investigates how these relationships changed over time and what impact time has on the development of the different characters. This research demonstrates the connection between the female characters in the film and how together they contribute to the characterization of James Bond. It becomes clear that these female characters are not just objects of desire or toys for Bond to play with, but that these female characters actually are essential characters in the Bond films.
