Monday, January 14: You will depart from DFW on your afternoon flight to Rome. Tuesday, January 15: You will arrive in Rome this morning and transfer to your hotel, to check in (all the rooms may not be immediately ready upon arrival) and go to lunch on your own. After lunch, you will meet Father Lowry and his group to begin your Pilgrimage with a tour of the North American College followed by Mass at the Assumption chapel. Afterward, you will enjoy a group dinner. D Wednesday, January 16: You will begin today and each day with an authentic Italian Breakfast Buffet at the hotel. After breakfast, you will meet Father Lowry and his group for Mass and a General Audience with Pope Francis. After lunch on your own, you will meet the group for an afternoon tour of St. Peter’s given by Father Lowry. If time and logistics allow, you will walk to the dome of St. Peters. Afterward, enjoy fellowship with a group dinner. B,D Thursday, January 17: After breakfast at the hotel, you will proceed to the famous Piazza di , where you can climb the famous and enjoy the amazing views. Next you will stroll through the streets of Rome to the stunning . After some time there for photos, you will continue to Piazza where you will see the column erected by . This column is considered by the locals to be the center of Rome. You will stop to visit the Pantheon so you can appreciate the impressive architectural features of this historic structure. Nearby is where you will see Bernini’s “Fountain of the Four Rivers” at the center of the square. The evening will be free for you to explore and have dinner on your own before returning to the hotel. B Friday, January 18: After breakfast you will begin your day with Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. After Mass, proceed to the church of St. Peter in Chains. At this church you will see Michelangelo’s statue of Moses, which alone makes a trip to Rome worthwhile. From there you will go to the Church of St. Paul Outside the Wall. This is the traditional burial place of Paul. The Emperor Constantine erected a building over the site where Paul’s followers had marked as his burial site. The building today is primarily from the 19th and 20th centuries. After your visit here, you will proceed to the catacombs, burial place and meeting place of the early Christians. They were forced to meet in secret, underground, to escape persecution during the time before Constantine. Early frescoes and sculptures can still be seen inside. From here you will return to the hotel where you can decide to relax or go out and enjoy Rome as the locals do! Dinner will be on your own. B Saturday, January 19: Today you will be visiting Imperial Rome. You will go to the Coliseum, Rome’s greatest amphitheater, commissioned by Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD. It was here that the Romans watched as the early Christians suffered and died as they were thrown in the arena with lions and other wild animals. You will visit the Underground Chambers, the Arena, and the Upper Tier. You will proceed through the , where you will see several ruined temples, triumphal arches, and basilicas. The was erected in 81 AD to commemorate the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. You will stop at the Mamertine Prison where Paul was imprisoned while in Rome. From there you will return to the hotel for dinner and overnight. B, D Sunday, January 20: After breakfast you will enjoy a worship service either at a local English-speaking church or at the hotel with your pastors. After worship, you will visit the Museo Nazionale Romano. Built onto the ruins of the Domitian Theater, this splendid palazzo houses beautiful mosaics and Roman sculptures. After your visit there, you will visit the , one of Rome’s most impressive art museums. You will return to the hotel for dinner and overnight. After lunch you will board your bus to drive to Florence to check into your hotel and have dinner on your own. B, L Tuesday, January 22: This morning you will begin with a walking tour of Florence. During the time that the Medici family was powerful in this area (14th-16th centuries, Florence was at the cultural and intellectual heart of Europe. You’ll stroll along the Ponte Vecchio, the beautiful old bridge lined with shops spanning the Arno. You will then proceed to the Duomo, the spiritual, geographical and historical heart of the city. This cathedral is the fourth largest in Europe and is still the tallest building in Florence, as well as one of the oldest. We’ll see the Baptistery with its celebrated bronze doors by Pisano and Ghiberti, (Dante was baptized here), the Campanile, designed by Giotto in 1334, the great Dome by Brunelleschi and finished in 1463, as well as many other features and famous works of art at the Cathedral Works Museum near this amazing structure. After lunch on your own, you will visit the Galleria dell’Accademia. Founded in 1563, it was the first school established in Europe specifically to teach the techniques of drawing, painting, and sculpture. The most famous work on display is Michelangelo’s David, which established Michelangelo at the age of 29 as the foremost sculptor of his time. Dinner will be on your own.
