ATRIUM Final Dissemination Event in Greece – ATHENA Research & Innovation Centre, Xanthi Page ii

1. Introduction

The ATRIUM project has leveraged upon the concept of a cultural route in order to build a synergy that brought together different stakeholders, ranging from local and regional government authorities, to academic and research institutions, in order to create a physical link between different countries with the underlying common interest embedded in the shared heritage and associated cultural, tourism and other business functions. Considering that such a network of stakeholders can become stronger if it fosters synergies with other cultural routes, the ATHENA Research & Innovation Centre took the initiative to jointly plan a final ATRIUM dissemination event in Greece , together with other Cultural Routes and initiatives, acting as a virtual ‘crossroads’ for the different cultural routes.

In order to strengthen the impact of the dissemination activity, it was planned to organize the event under the auspices of the Municipality of and seek to include it in the official Ministry of Culture events for the ‘European Heritage Days’, under the theme ‘Faces of Time’. The main joint organizers were:

- Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki - hosting organiser - ATHENA Research & Innovation Centre - co-organiser - Elliniki Etairia (Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage) – co-organiser

2. FACES OF TIME - CULTURAL ROUTES CROSSROADS, THE CONVERGENCE OF CULTURAL ROUTES AND THE IMPACT ON HERITAGE, PLANNING AND SUSTAINABILITY

2.1 Planning

Several meetings both physical and via other communication means (phone, skype) were held to plan this event. The final planning meeting was organized at the Municipality of Thessaloniki premises on the 10th of July 2013 with participation from the Municipality of Thessaloniki, the Region of Central , ATHENA Research & Innovation Centre, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, the Elliniki Etairia (Society for the Environment and Culture), the Museum of Byzantine Culture, the Wine Routes of Northern Greece. During the meeting the Mayor of Thessaloniki was also briefly present to highlight the interest and the will of the Municipality to support the event. The presence list of the main participants to the meeting is attached to this report.

It was decided that in order to maximize the event impact, it was appropriate to organize the event as a synergy of different Cultural Routes and other initiatives. Therefore the following three main Cultural routes-related initiatives supported the event: - - The ATRIUM project and its initiative to establish a cultural route - The Phoenicians’s route - The wine routes (Iter vitis)

Considering that the ATRIUM project piloting targeted a key area of urban re-development intervention in Thessaloniki, that is the area around Platform A of Thessaloniki’s port, a target was also set to engage the Port Authority of Thessaloniki and a site visit to the area.

Finally, it was sought from the outset to place the whole event under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, as part of the European Heritage Days (EHD) 2013, therefore the dates for the event were chosen to be 27-29 September 2013, coinciding with EHD.

2.2 Program

Upon agreeing on the event planning, an active campaign was pursued to attract high quality speakers from relevant activities across Europe. The campaign included direct communications (phone, email, invitations, bi-lateral meetings), but also mass-emailing to raise awareness on the planning of the event. The final event program was also communicated with similar means. The final program, an example of invitation letter and an example of the email campaign are attached. Furthermore, the event was publicized at the ATHENA Research & Innovation Centre web pages (see attachments). The final program was as follows:

2.4 The Conference

The conference took place at the Thessaloniki Archaeological Museum. The opening was on the evening of 27/9, when the introductory remarks were made by the organizing committee and official representatives from regional and other authorities were present and gave brief introductory talks and support. The concept of cultural crossroads was highlighted by the inclusion of the ‘En Chordais’ ensemble, a world-class music group playing Mediterranean music with cross-cultural influences. The main conference sessions took place on 28/9, including 4 main streams: - The Phoenician’s Route - The Wine Routes - ATRIUM - Best practices and other initiatives

Finally a site visit at the piloting case study of the Thessaloniki Port Headquarters was organized on the 29/9. Importantly, after the visit the Municipality of Thessaloniki opened the ‘Demetria 2013’ festivities at the same site. ‘Demetria’ is the main annual cultural event in Thessaloniki and hosting it at this particular site signifies the grown importance that the urban re-development of Thessaloniki’s port Platform A has acquired over the years.
